The World of Make Believe

True story, only the names have been changed. This happened over ten or fifteen years ago. Mable called us all upset. She said her husband Larry has been missing several days. She did not know where he was. We rushed over to her house. We pulled into the driveway about the same time as their deacon arrived. She had called him too. Larry was in the yard on a riding mower cutting grass. He waved. Mable met us at the door visibly shaken. She said Larry has not returned yet. One of us said Larry was out in the yard on the lawnmower cutting the grass. Mable said, “Oh no, that is Randy, he comes over sometimes.” We went out to talk to the person on the riding lawn mower. It was Larry alright, he addressed us each by name. I think the Cobb County Police came too. She called them also. I think this is what happened: To put a little spark in their love life, they pretended that Larry was Randy and they had an affair going. However, Mable was getting on up in years and that reality confused with make believe. I think the Deacon thought the same, and probably the cop too. Mable and Larry are now dead and who knows where Randy is at. All’s well that ends well.
