Trick or Treaters' Report

By remembering the past we did not think we would get many trick or treaters. Therefore we didn't buy much candy. We did not want to be stuck with a bunch of candy the day after.

We planned it very good. We had about ten kids to come by. We had one candy bar left over... but not for long.

As we opened the door Willow stood near us, not growling, but just looking dumbstruck, and a little kid saw her and screamed in terror, "DON'T LET THE DOG OUT!!! DON'T LET THE DOG OUT!"

A little girl, well not so little, I think she was tall for her age, was wearing a coat or a jacket. She was aware her costume did not show and wanted to explain: "I'm suppose to be a pirate but my mom made we wear a coat."

After the last trick or treater we turned out the front light, locked the door, and loaded the shotgun.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I know, I know, I used it before. It is too good to let lie.

Time Change! Remember Fall Backwards!

Remember, at 2am tomorrow morning it will be time to change your time pieces. Of course, it is permissible to set them before you go to bed. You do not, I repeat, do not, have to wait until 2am to change the time.

When I was a time keeper at the Atlanta Post Office, always we could count on at least some people coming in hour late or early because they did not set their clocks or setting their time pieces opposite and coming in 2 hours late. One person even came in 4 hours late. He ended up being a supervisor then the divisional operations manager.

Back to North Georgia

(taken several years ago - click any picture to make overwhelming larger)

We went to north Georgia again yesterday. We went to visit Brenda and Peter, friends of ours. Brenda and Anna worked together. They are very gracious hosts.

About eight or nine years ago, after Brenda retired, she and Peter bought land near Cleveland and built their dream home, above. The picture above was taken about four years ago. I thought I took a new picture of the house yesterday but there is no image. It is hard keeping a running inventory in my mind of what what images I just captured. I pulled the above out of my collection of several years ago.

Here are some outside details that I did take yesterday. As you can see they work very hard adding new things. They are very energetic.

They rely on spring water and rain water. Here is one of the barrels they keep rainwater in. They have two. They pressure washed their driveway with captured rainwater not long ago.

We rode all around the local area looking at the beautiful fall foliage.

We dropped by the Sautee Store which we usually do when we are near. In December of 1967 we stopped here on our way to our honeymoon cabin at Unicoi State Park. The lady then, gave us a copper candelabra and a cheese knife as a wedding present. I haven’t noticed this before. See the old sign that advertises The Music Store in Marietta? That’s real!

(picture taken several years ago)

We rode by the land and house that used to belong to Moses Harshaw’s. Moses is a distant relative-in-law who was considered at the time “The meanest man in Georgia” because when a slave that too old or sickly to be productive he simply ended their life. Now the house is the Stovall House Bed & Breakfast and they do wedding & receptions receptions too.

(picture taken several years ago)

Here is a mill on a river near Clarksville.

Inside the mill deep below the gift shop is the big thing that the water turns. The point where you look at it is in a dark area. The flash lit up the dark room you can see the heavy scale on the floor. In the darkness you can’t see it. Being in the darkness I tripped over it. Brenda grabbed me before I crashed. If I had tripped over it just right and Brenda wasn't there I could have crashed through the metal railing there and fall into the milling works. Then I would be grounded up, packaged and come put into a sack named Corn Meal, and then if they wanted to do it right, they would cross out Corn and put “Eddie Meal” .

Scary Legacy

One of the things I enjoy about genealogy is that I sometimes come across some strange tales that have been handed down from generation to generation. Here is one that suits this season:

One of my ancestors was Joseph Bookout (1700-1806). Joseph was born in Holland and this little blip of legacy about him has been handed down:

Many family researchers believe Joseph emigrated from Holland, sailing from Leiden, Netherlands to New Amsterdam (now New York). Others believe that Joseph is the son of Jan BOECKHOUT (BOOKOUT) who arrived Oct. 12, 1662 and settled on Long Island, NY. Joseph migrated to Randolph Co., NC. He died at age 105 and is buried at the Holly Springs Meeting House Cemetery, 5 miles SW of Ramseur, NC. - Paul Pullen.

Here what has been handed down on his brother John Bookhout:

"The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" (the Headless Horseman) started in the cemetery at the Dutch Reform Church, Tarrytown, New York (near the Hudson River).

John BOOKHOUT or his son was serving on the Board of Elders when the legend was born. Later Washington Irvin made the legend into a published story.

It is a Small World

.It is a Small World

Never turn up your nose at someone. They may be closer to you than you think.

I am constantly being amazed just what a small world we live in. A old school chum of mine, Brad Martin, is a journalist. In his career he has interviewed the 14th Dalai Lama. That means, if your lean sideways to get a better perspective, I am only one degree away from his Holiness.

And as the above picture plainly shows, I was only 0◦ from “Frog”.

I have other claims to fame, too numerous to mention. Now, the ambitious person that I am, I asked, how can I make a buck off my claims to fame? I can’t. Looking around I see that just about every person is about 1 to 4 degrees away from greatness. How can I get rich over other people’s greatness if everybody has the same degrees? As a matter of fact, I read that many people believe that all people on this planet are the most 4◦ apart or 4 “deep as some people say.

Just yesterday at the GOBAG meeting Charlie told me a schoolmate of ours, years ago, married Senator Strom Thurmond’s daughter. So, everybody at Marietta High School in the late 50s is 2 ◦ from Strom Thurmond.

Being just a couple degrees from somebody famous is nice conversation for I think it means more when the degrees are friends related.

Also at the GOBAG meeting yesterday Paul told me he worked with a guy a named Gene. Gene and I spend our adolescent years near each other. We were chased away from stealing watermelons from a neighbor’s garden with a shotgun blast… Gene, I, and about four others spent about 4 or 5 years chasing each other on our bikes, climbing trees, and just being typical boys with dogs. Gene in that time period of my life meant a lot to me.

Paul also told me until recently Gene operated a little side of the road business selling produce on Canton Road near Jamerson Road. I drove by that stand many times and more than once was tempted to pull over and buy tomatoes or something but just never did.

I wonder if I had stopped would I have recognized Gene? Who knows? It is a Small world!

I was also told at a GOBAG meeting about someone I had recently broke bread and drunk a beer with once had a contract out for my cousin. It is a Small world!

SHIP OF (16) FOOLS

Well, it felt like a ship with all the water splashing around us.

Rain or Shine the GOBAG people meet and eat… I know, I know, that rhymes.

Maybe we can say:

Rain or Shine the GOBAG people meet,
And eat,
And shoot the sheet.

It was pouring down rain all day today. I thought that surely the rain would let up by around 4pm… just in time for our meeting. The Lord will take care of us.

The Lord pulled a trick on us. The rain stopped shortly after we finished eating.

Chili was the menu. Delicious chili! Monty found another super recipe he duplicated and improved on. It had just enough spice and just enough meat, beans, and other juices.

As I mentioned it rained hard. Luckily for us, only 16 (give or take 1 or 2) showed up. If several more came some people would be pushed out in the open where it was bombarding rain by the buckets.

The plans are being planned for the upcoming Billy Joe Royal concert, which will probably be New Years Eve at the Strand Theater in downtown Marietta.

Y’all come.

Dog Jokes - Unexplained

This morning I ran into my friend Roy at the Post Office. Roy and I live in the same subdivision, about 5 blocks apart. We each have a PO Box and see other at the Post Office more than we see each other in the neighborhood.

Roy told me he and his wife Bonnie have a new pup, part cocker.

I said, “That Joe Cocker gets around doesn’t he?”

We both laughed.

Then I told him that I heard that dogs that were part cocker spaniel didn’t shed much. He said that might be true, they haven’t noticed much dog hair.

Roy said he was trying to teach the dog to play Frisbee, do I play Frisbee with Willow?

I told him I tried. Willow is good at catching it but she doesn’t want to give it up. The same with playing ball with her, after she catches it, she gets downright possessive and growls and snaps if you try to take it from her… like she earned it, now it is belongs to her.

Roy said why didn’t I get the rule book (he pantomimed flipping pages) and show her (pointing on his imaginary page) that the rules state that you give it up to play catch it again.

We both laughed.

There are some serious-minded people who might have said something like: “Joe Cocker? What are you talking about? I meant part cocker spaniel!”

And:

“But dogs can’t read!”

Today In History

Some very notable people were born on this date:

1945 – Pat Conroy author of Great Santini, Prince of Tides, Citadel and others.
1946 – Pat Sajak TV Host of Wheel of Fortune.
1946 - Jaclyn Smith actress (Charlie’s Angels).
1947 - Hilary Rodham Clinton, First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State.

October the 26th produced people who made a difference. Whether you agree with the above people or not, I think you would have to agree they made a difference.

Imagine what the world would be like if there was no Pat Sajak.

When I first entered Marietta High School it appeared that the whole reason for the school's being was to support the football team. As time went on I realized that was true.

SUNDAY FUNNIES - MAD #9 - LI'L ORPHAN MELVIN

It must be Sunday again and here I am again ready to read you the funnies.

Today we are opening MAD Comicbook #9. The cover is by editor Harvey Kurtzman, as most the other stories in it. The picture refers to the story inside lampooning the movie HIGH NOON with Gary Cooper.

The inside cover is an ad for the EC Fan- Addict Club, which is a way publisher William Gaines kept close to the EC readers and of course it was also a ploy to boost circulation. Notice all the EC type characters looming high on the wall or damaged building side It was drawn by Jack Davis.

And the first story is a take-off on LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE. If you never read the strip in the funny papers it might not make any sense to you....but wait! Maybe you saw the play on Broadway. If not, maybe you saw the movie. The story is by Harvey Kurtzman and the art is by Wally Wood. You just can't duplicate Wood's art style. It stands alone.
