SUNDAY FUNNIES: TWO-FISTED TALES: MUD

Now that we are looking at North Korea in a Karate Chop mind and North Korea looking us in the same manner and both sides talking big bombs, Nuclear Bombs, and the Mother of all Bombs, and after we blow each other to bits remember, KIM JONG-UN STARTED IT!

Here is another North Korea war story in 1951, from the Two-Fisted Tales MUD written by editor Harvey Kurtzman and illustrated by Jack Davis.

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! PANIC's Ads in Comics

PANIC comics was published by EC comics who also published MAD comics.  As a matter of fact, the same artists drew for both publications,  But some drew for PANIC and not for MAD, example the person that drew this, Joe Orlando.  Joe drew for PANIC but not for MAD.  I don't think his quality  was good enough for MAD comic.  He died a couple years ago, and ironically, he was the CEO of MAD in his last years.

Stan Lee 93 Today

Today is Stan Lee's birthday.  He is 93 years old.  He was born December 28, 1922.  He is credited with creating SPIDERMAN, THE HULK, and many other MARVEL comicbook Super Heroes.

I think now Stan is MARVEL comics.  He is the force behind all of it, including TV and movie rights (if you look closely you will see Stan making a cameo in all of the MARVEL Super Hero movies).  Many years ago, as a young man he was hired at Marvel as an editor.  His uncle owned the company.  He developed into a great comic book writer, editor, and creators manipulator.

He gave a helping and getting started to one of my favorite people Harvey Kurtzman when Harvey was trying to get his start in comics.  Harvey later created MAD Comicbook at E.C. Comicbooks.

In more recent years I think Stan was the boss of  my first cousin-in-law Mark Bagley, one of the SPIDERMAN artists.

My happy 93rd birthday message to Stan Lee is, "Keep up the good work Stan, but remember, you can be replaced."

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! THE RAVEN

It is that time of year for ghosts, haints , harvest, and Edgar Allen Poe.  This Wednesday, October 7, 2015 will be Edgar's 166th anniversary of his death.  I am recognizing it with his poem THE RAVEN as interpreted by in MAD comicbook #9, with editor Harvey Kurtzman and artist Will Elder.

To this day I remember most the words in ANNABELLA LEE by Poe.

I was a child,
and she was a child,
In this Kingdom by the sea,
Annabella Lee
and  me.

I'm not sure I didn't get Me aned Annabella Lee crossed.
I still remember it mostly  because my 12th grade English Teacher  Mrs Clara Nolen had me memorized and recite it.  And she is still controlling that part of my brain from the grave.

Here is fact I learned last week:  My English teacher Mrs. Clara Nolen was the aunt of my science teacher Mrs. Clara Howell.  They lived next door to each other and Clara is named after Clara!

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! MAD # 25. Baseball

This MAD article is self explanatory.  Who doesn't like baseball?  How could we go wrong?  It is illustrated by Jack Davis.  It is hard for me to say who wrote it..  In EC publications those days the editor usually wrote the stories (unless he stole them).   But, editor Harvey Kurtzman was fired before this issue went to print and was replaced by Al Felstein.  But, still a lot of stuff were lying around that Kurtzman wrote... that would be in issues to come, So, I think Kurtzman wrote it but maybe not!

SUNDAY FUNNIES! ACES HIGH's IRON MAN!

click on images to make them larger and readable

This  a story of America vs Nazi dog fights in WWII.  It also has an eerie twang to it.  The cover was illustrated by George Evans and the story was  illustrated by Georgia corn-fed MAD artist Jack Davis.

There is a message of what  is often the bottom line of what happens to many people who fight in war.
