Lolagene and Bee

Two of my aunts, Lolagene and Bee standing in my grandparents' front yard on Manget Street.
Lolagene Turner Hunter (1918-1996) is the wife of my father's brother Doug Hunter. They had four children, one died at childbirth. Lolajene worked at the library. I remember one time coming into the library and saw her reading a story to a group of children. She was putting much feeling into it, I had a feeling she was a local sensation among the kids. I think the Marietta Journal one time did a story on her story telling abilities.
She and Doug gave Anna and I a baby shower and about 1985 gave all the youngest-generation Hunters an Easter Egg Hunt.
Elizabeth Beatrice "Bee" Hunter Crain (1903-1971) nickname was "Bee" because one of her younger brothers had a hard time saying Beatrice. She was a telephone operator in Marietta. After she married Robert Spencer Crain she settled down having five kids and enjoying her huge extended family, at times helping out when one of her brothers needed it. She and her family lived in a big house on Garrison Road and hosted several family reunions and at least a couple of wakes or visitations that I remember (her parents).

Jerry Would Be 77

On Thursday, April the 26th, my first cousin, the late Jerry Hunter, would be celebrating his 77th year, if he was still alive.

Jerry was a F-105 pilot in the Air Force.  in Vietnam.  On his 34th mission he was shot down, losing is life May 25, 1966, at age 25.
Jerry was born about two and half months before me.

Another Hunter first cousin called me today and we had a nice enjoyable long talk.  We ended the conversation with this thought:

He said something like this, “Why do good people like Jerry live such a sort life, when a piece of work like me live so long?”

I told him I saw Jerry’s father  “Bus” looking at me and by his expression was  probably thinking close to  the same thing.

Eric England R.I.P.

My old ship-mate distant cousin died yesterday.  I only met him one time at a Hunter Reunion.  I took his picture because I thought our meeting was unique because at our only meeting we discovered we were both on the ship USS NEWPORT NEWS at the same time..  Later I learned he was one of the top, if not the top, sniper(s) in the Vietnam War.  From what I know, I think he was a very humbled and shy person.

I heard a few days ago they were about to amputate his leg.  Maybe that did him in.

I remember at our own meeting we talked about the NEWPORT NEWS.  I told him what I hated the most about shipboard life for enlisted men was that no matter when you go to the "head" for a bowel movement, the toilets are lined up facing one another, and it is always crowded, even in the middle of night, so when you take a shit you will be touching knees with someone you don't know very well.  He got a kick out of that.

Google Eric England and you will meet an interesting person.

Eric England, Hero

Do you remember my blog on December 15th, 2017, about Eric England, sniper hero?

Eric is undergoing serious surgery today.   Wish him a quick recovery.  If it were not for people of Eric's caliber you might not have the freedoms you  enjoy  today.

Jack Hunter's 65th Birthday, March 2018

True Story:  Yesterday we were invited to celebrate my cousin Jack’s 65th birthday at Presbyterian Village, a retirement community
We turned off the EastWest Connector and we were in the Village.  Signs saying something like information pointed for us to turn right.  We followed the signs and ended up in the parking lot of a big complex of a couple of buildings or maybe an L shaped building.  We went in the most likely looking door for information and the person told us to go back to the beginning, where we first entered at the East-West Connector and go straight instead of turning right, and it is the first building on the right.
We drover back to the entrance at the East-West Connector and followed directions and went straight.  We rode by a beautiful landscaped green golf course, around a curve and a there was the big building or buildings, the first thing on the right.

It was the same building we ran in and asked directions minutes before.  We went into the other door to Jack’s party.

Elizabeth "Jo" Hunter Stewart (1924-2017)

Sadly, I just learned my first cousin Elizabeth Jo Hunter died October 29, 2017.    She is Herbert  and Willie Collins Hunter's daughter.

She was a character.  When she was a student at UGA, she worked part time for cartoonist Ed Dodd (MARK TRAIL).  Professionally, she was a psychologist for Cobb County Board of Education.

She was always on top of things and positive.   She lived 93 years.   She will leave a vacuum.

Betty Smith Hunter at a Marietta Museum of History 's REMEMBER WHEN presentation.  Betty is a long lost cousin-in-law.  She married Randall Hunter - then she too, became a Hunter, whether that is good or bad is up for debate.
Betty was a councilperson and was responsible for many good things for Marietta, such as park  in parks and the Confederate Cemetery.
I did not realize until I talked to her several times that when she was a kid living with her parents I delivered their paper on Lakewood Drive.
Small world!  To make it even smaller, my grandmother and aunt lived across the street from them.

Betty and I have both done a lot of family history research.
Randall and I both are descendants of William Hunter (c1750-aft 1840) and Anna Caldwell (1762-1863) - yes, Anna lived to be 101 years old.  On the 1860 census she was blind and living with a son.
Betty's husband Randall Earnest Hunter and I are 5th cousins, once removed.  To give you an idea how distant cousins we are it is believed by the professionals that all the commoners that have been in England for generations are at least 4th cousins to each other.

Thomas Hunter changes

This is Tom Hunter, from Asheville, NC,  at the Hunter Reunion at Track Rock Campground near Blairsville, Georgia, some years ago.  I think Tom's first time coming to this was the same time I was there for the first time.   Everybody there knew everybody, except Tom and I.  Through the years we got to know our distant cousins.
That day I met Tom Hunter he was very shy and quiet.  I think he said he was a locksmith.  His wife and preteen daughter were with him.
Through the next 25 or so years I attended the reunions off and on  and so did Tom.  Only seeing them one day every  year or so I could easily see change that occurred the past 12 months to 24 months.
The first year I could see little change.  Tom didn't seem quiet as shy, but his preteen daughter hung close to her parents, it was like she was thinking, "I don't know these people."
Maybe the second or third year Tom and his daughter came but his wife was not there.  I asked him where was his wife and he said she died.
Then Tom dressed more stylish, grew a mustache, and smiled more.   He seemed more talkative.
And during that time his daughter, now a teenager, dressed more stylish.  And I think she may have brought a boy friend... my memory is not clear on that.

I haven't been since 2008, eight years ago.  Tom may be Grandpa Tom with several grand youngons  in tow.

Cuz Johnny Hunter

Cousin Johnny Hunter in Brandy's World Famous Hotdogs parking lot.  This was taken a few years ago.  Johnny lives in Brunswick now.   He stopped in town on his way to Springer Mountain in North Georgia to go hunting or a "Men's Week Out".  I don't know if he got to shoot one of those free-range Springer Mountain Chickens or not.

Hunter Brothers and Their Wives 1977

click on picture to make it bigger

While we are on the subject of Hunter Reunions, here are the Hunter Brothers, the backbone of the Hunter Reunions when they were in their prime.  This one is dated August 7, 1977. The missing siblings are Herbert, Bee, and W.C.  W.C. was in the Veterans Hospital in Millegeville.  Herbert and Bee had passed on.

Of course as almost always, they are lined up in age order when posing for a picture.

A Hunter Reunion, Union County, Ga, Scene

Left to Right:  Dora Hunter Spiva's caregiver; Frank Hunter; the late Dora Hunter Spiva (about 103 in this picture); and me.

Frank Hunter is down to earth friendly person.  I just want to say that, because in this picture it appears that he is glaring at me scowling.  Oh me, what did I say or do this time?

Douglas Quarles

Another Doug picture!  Yesterday it was Doug Hunter.   Today it is Doug Quarles (I may have spelled the last name spelled wrong).  Almost two years ago Anna's cousin Pat's husband Mike died.

I was a pallbearer.  Another pallbearer was Pat's supervisor.  After the graveside services Her supervisor and I introduced ourselves.  His name is Doug.  We kind of walked around the cemetery talking. I said my uncle is buried right over there, Dick Hunter.  He said, "Dick Hunter is your uncle?"

Doug said he was named after Dick's brother Doug Hunter.  He went on to say that he is on Lola Jean's Turner side of the family.

Doug and I, were strangers until that funeral and both had the same Doug Hunter for an uncle!

Small World again!

Paris Douglas Hunter

My uncle  Paris Douglas "Doug"  Hunter (1916-1986).  Like most of his brothers he worked at Lockheed and loved sports.  One time he was seriously considered for playing professional baseball.

When I was a kid I looked forward to see him because he knew how to get my giggle box goingHe had a sharp wit with a quick response.  I think he had a nickname for all his nieces and nephews.  I was "Tedo", who I think was a wrestler in the 1940s.  My sister Bonnie was "Bonami".  Thus, he gave "Bonami" a facebook  pseudo name.

He married Lola Jean Turner (1918-1996.  I thought Lola Jean was a 100% family person until I went to the Marietta Public Library, branch upstairs in a metal building at Larry Bell Park and accidentally  saw her with a group of kids around her telling a story with enthusiasm..

Doug and Lola Jean had four kids, which three grew into adulthood.  The fourth one, Jeanne in 1946, apparently died at birth or shortly Afterwards.

Dalton Tyson and Chuck Hunter

These are my cousins Robert Dalton Tyson and Chuck Hunter at a Hunter reunion.  Dalton is the older brother of Donald Tyson who was on this blog yesterday.  Dalton at one time owned the Past Time Grill (a pool hall) and another time or maybe the same time he owned Terminal Taxi Company, which he purchased from the Goddard family.  Terminal Taxi was located conveniently next to the Greyhound Bus Station and a rock's throw from the Past Time Grill.  He and Donald are the sons of Ed and Belle Kuykdendall Tyson.

Chuck, son of Dick and Jeannette Hunter, is a builder.  One time he started a contracting company named after his mother, father, and himself.

Dalton Tyson is the only relative I know of  that a contract was out on him at one time.  A person in prison put a contract out on him.  It was a jealous husband behind bars kind of thing.

Evidently, the contract was not carried out.  Dalton died of natural causes in 2000.

Dick and Jeannette Hunter

My uncle and aunt, Dick (1923-1982)  and Jeannette  Quintal Hunter.  The picture was taken about 1978 at a Hunter Reunion, when I was building a foundation , or base, of my roots, in family research.  Dick joined the Navy   and  served in WWIII.  Once his brother W.C. was recuperating  from a head wound in North Africa. and sitting outside a Red Cross facility and a group of sailors came by who just came ashore.  W.C. turned to a friend, also a patient, and said something like, "See that guy there?  He looks just like my youngest brother Dick."   And it was.
Dick was/is the youngest of eight siblings.  While he was in the Navy, stationed at Boston he met Jeannette and they courted and married.  They had thirteen children.   Twelve lived well into adulthood.  One died at birth.
Dick was a planner at Lockheed and Jeannette started her own successful  real estate business (Hunter Realty).  As a kid I used to be amazed at the enormity of running a  household of fourteen eaters.  They bought a big freezer and bought in large qualities cheaper.
He got into local politics, first councilman then Mayor of Marietta.  Later he was a State of Georgia inspector and he also built houses.
As far as I know he always seemed to be smiling.  I cannot imagine him frowning.  He had a positive drive.  Failure wasn't an option.

He lived fifty-nine years.  Jeannette will be 90 this summer.  A couple of years ago I sat behind Jeannette at a funeral, Bobby Crain, a cousin, asked Jeannette the number of one of her sons in the contracting business, she instantly told him. Then he asked the number of another one of her sons, also in the contracting business and she instantly told him. I can't do that instant recall with my own two sons' numbers.

Dressing Up On Easter Day

My uncle Robert Ray "Bus" Hunter (1906-2005).  It appears that Bus is dressed in his finest, which traditionally people used to do on Easter Day.  I don't know if this picture was taken on Easter Day or not.

I remember when I was less than ten years old one Easter we, as a family, sat in the car on the Square in Marietta, timed to be there when church let out.  It was enjoyable watching people come to the Square dressed in their best to get an after church ice cream at one of the Square's five drugstores (Jones, Hodges, Williams, Athertons, and Reynold's and Ferra).  It was an impromptu Easter Parade.

Speaking of Easter Parades, when  in the Navy, stationed in New Jersey, on Easter Sunday, about 1964, a bunch of us went to Atlantic City's Boardwalk.  It was the mother of Easter Parades.  With the exception of us,  people were dressed up, gaudy but nice.

Stan Lee 93 Today

Today is Stan Lee's birthday.  He is 93 years old.  He was born December 28, 1922.  He is credited with creating SPIDERMAN, THE HULK, and many other MARVEL comicbook Super Heroes.

I think now Stan is MARVEL comics.  He is the force behind all of it, including TV and movie rights (if you look closely you will see Stan making a cameo in all of the MARVEL Super Hero movies).  Many years ago, as a young man he was hired at Marvel as an editor.  His uncle owned the company.  He developed into a great comic book writer, editor, and creators manipulator.

He gave a helping and getting started to one of my favorite people Harvey Kurtzman when Harvey was trying to get his start in comics.  Harvey later created MAD Comicbook at E.C. Comicbooks.

In more recent years I think Stan was the boss of  my first cousin-in-law Mark Bagley, one of the SPIDERMAN artists.

My happy 93rd birthday message to Stan Lee is, "Keep up the good work Stan, but remember, you can be replaced."

Marietta Policemen, Years Ago and Now

Marietta Patrolman Ed Hunter and his two children Eddie and Anna, and Eddie's one eyed rag doll in the 1940s'.

Marietta Policemen Ed Hunter and Jesse Cooper.  I think Jesse and his family lived on or near the corner of McDonald and Maxwell Streets.  I have no idea why I know or think that.

Marietta Policemen Stanley and his brother Ed Hunter.  Stanley was a plains clothes officer.

Cobb County Chief of Police Ed Hunter in the 1950s.  Before he was Cobb County Chief he was chief of the Marietta Police but I don't have a picture of that.

Rupert Raines.  He was the assistant chief of the Marietta Police in the 1970s. (Rupert made that face for my benefit, actually he is very gentle,

Here is Dan Flynn, the current chief of the Marietta Police Force.  We were on a Civil War Hospital tour together in downtown Marietta.  He is very congenial and likable.  So is the Mrs.

The reason of this Marietta Police Force article is that Friday at 10:30am the Marietta Museum of History will have an opened discussion of the Marietta Police of the past.
