Throwback Thursday: Aunt Tade Tyson

Throwback Thursday:  My great aunt Lela Octavia "Tade" Tyson Carr (1886-1957).  She is my Grandma Hunter's sister.  Aunt "Tade" married E.J. Carr 4 December 1928 in Cobb County.   I know nothing else about the man and would not known about him if I had not came across his name in the book of Cobb County marriages and that he is listed in the Mars Hill Cemetery.

Aunt Tade lived in Acworth, just a block or two from Main Street, across the corner from a school.  Sometimes when I went to Acworth Beach, before I could drive I would drop by and visit her while waiting on Daddy to pick me up.

The picture of the three women are sisters.  The one on Tade's right is Anne Tyson Crowder and the one on her left, the one she is looking at disapprovingly or concerned is my Grandma Hunter.

Dalton Tyson and Chuck Hunter

These are my cousins Robert Dalton Tyson and Chuck Hunter at a Hunter reunion.  Dalton is the older brother of Donald Tyson who was on this blog yesterday.  Dalton at one time owned the Past Time Grill (a pool hall) and another time or maybe the same time he owned Terminal Taxi Company, which he purchased from the Goddard family.  Terminal Taxi was located conveniently next to the Greyhound Bus Station and a rock's throw from the Past Time Grill.  He and Donald are the sons of Ed and Belle Kuykdendall Tyson.

Chuck, son of Dick and Jeannette Hunter, is a builder.  One time he started a contracting company named after his mother, father, and himself.

Dalton Tyson is the only relative I know of  that a contract was out on him at one time.  A person in prison put a contract out on him.  It was a jealous husband behind bars kind of thing.

Evidently, the contract was not carried out.  Dalton died of natural causes in 2000.

Death in the Chocolate Candy Box

As Forrest Gump said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get"  (or similar).   So is genealogy.  Today I was posting information on Aaron Tison, a distant Tyson relative in Bemen County, Georgia, who was born in 1840 and married to Elizabeth Holland,  when I noticed an entry in the notes section.   I looked closer and it said:  "Aaron was accused of killing his father-in-law, B. HOLLAND. Indicted 1867, Mistrial 1868.  He did not kill his father-in-law, but hired someone to do it."

O.M.s Part 1

These are about 150 pictures of Old Mariettans, some have died since their picture was taken.  Only one is not a Mariettan, Governor Deal's wife.  I took all the pictures, good and bad, except one:  In error I included a picture of Don Hunter at bat, which I did not take.   This is part one,  one more to follow, as soon as soon  I get around to it.

You may find some names wrong or misspelled.  Being mostly a recluse, that's my bad.  Also, if a cluster of people are in a picture, I found it hard to label everybody in it, so to be fair, I ignored all.

Terminal Taxi's Ray and Dalton

Terminal Taxi was the taxi service near the Greyhound Bus Station.  It was just a lot away, on a dirt plateau overlooking the station.   Terminal Taxi was owned by the Goddard family.

I went to school with the Goddard's son Raymond.  The other day on facebook someone was asking what ever happened to Ray Goddard.

Well?  Does anybody know?

My first cousin, once removed, Dalton Tyson once owned Terminal Taxi.  Dalton was a wheeler dealer that took gambles, literally.  Another time he owned Past Time Grill, a pool hall, just a block up the street from the bus station.

Once a contract was out on Dalton by a prisoner who heard Dalton was seeing  his wife.  Dalton died of natural causes, I hope the prisoner got a refund.

Kin Who Served

These are the kin folks that I know served in the Armed Forces.  Proceed with caution,  they might not be chronological order and some are not in uniform.  In error I probably left someone out.

click on image to enlarge any picture.

3rd great grandfather -Greenville Pullen, Sr. served in the Indian Wars as a musician.  He played a fife.

3rd great grandfather - Jesse Bookout also fought in the Indian Wars and later became an employee of the famous Chief Van of Chatsworth, Georgia, which was against the law and caused problems.

William A. Hunter/Trammell &Emaline Ray
3rd greant grandfather -William served in the CSA, NC 39th Infantry, Co . I.  He was wounded during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and recuperated nearby in Woodstock, which ended up being his and his family's new home.

William Hunter/Trammell fought on Kennesaw Mountain with the name William Trammell (before he changed his name to Hunter).

4th great grandfahter - His great grandfather, also named William Trammell fought at Kings Mountain, in the Revolutionary War.  Same name; both wounded in a battle on a mountain that started with the letter K.

William A. Hunter/Trammell's father, my great great grandfather, Jason Henderson Hunter recruited and formed  his own CSA unit that attacked Federal gunboats on the Mississippi.

1st cousin, 4x removed - Leander Newton Trammell.  He served as a quartermaster in the CSA.
He was an elected representative in Georgia and was the Governor of Georgia, technically for one day.   He made his home in Dalton and Marietta..

I don't have a picture of John T. Huey, but I do have a picture of his wife Drucilla Wilson Huey.  (2nd great grandfather) John was a large landholder, and therefore exempted from Military Service.  However, he went anyway, for a fee, in place of John B. Tippen.  He was caught up in the famous Siege of Vicksburg.

William D. Petty
2nd great uncle -I know he was in, I don't have his facts.
So was his brother Daniel Webster Petty, below.

Great grandfather - Daniel Webster Petty and Jane Garrett
Daniel Enlisted- Confederate Army Co B, 65th Regiment, Ga. Infantry

Great Uncle -Robert Edward Tyson
Uncle Ed, was in WWI.

This picture is the Marietta National Guard in 1937.  Most of the Hunter brothers are there.  In the front row center in the black shirt is Stanley Hunter.

First row:  Jimmy and Bobby Crain.
Uncles & first cousins -Second row: Stanley and Dick Hunter.  Dick was home on leave.  Nephew Bobby would join the Naval Reserves.  I know, because Bobby and I both were Naval Reservists at the same time.

Uncle -Walter Clarence, "W.C." during  WWII W.C was drinking coffee at the Red Cross in Africa and a bunch of U.S. Sailors walked by.  W.C. pointed at one of the sailors and said that kid looks just like his little brother Dick, and it was. He was wounded and a metal plate was put in his head, he was a war casualty that effected him the rest of his life.  He died in the VA hospital many years later.

Uncle - Jack Hunter spent a career in the Navy, and was in the Pacific in WWII.  He survived Pearl Harbor and is credited for pulling Eddie Rickenbacker  from the sea onto their PT boat.

Uncle - Stanley Hunter fought on D-Day, June 4, 1944.  He also had the misfortune of watching his first cousin and best friend Horace Crowder died from enemy fire.

Father - Ed Hunter was in the Georgia National Guard.  I think Daddy loved the fellowship. In the National Guards he made friends with Leo Blackwell, then chief of the Marietta Pollice and he hired daddy as a patrolman.  Up until then Daddy worked for Glover Machinery .  Not only did the Marietta National Guard help with state disasters, go to war, when needed over see, it also served as an excellent networking tool, like Linkin is today.

Uncle -Doug Hunter was in the Army, I just don't have a picture of him in his uniform.

1st cousin - Ray Hunter, WWII

uncle & 1st cousin, once removed - I think this may be cousins Horace Crowder and Stanley Hunter before their service time, they joined together.  As mentioned above, Horace was killed.

Uncle -Leonard Petty, Navy

Uncle -William LeRoy Petty.  He was "Bill" to his friends, he was "Roy" to his family, and "L-Rod "to his service buddies. Roy was in the D-Day Invasion of  Normandy.  He killed a very big number of Germans.  At least two books mentioned him twice and heroic actions:  THE LONGEST DAY and RUDDER'S RANGERS.  He used to stand up in the audience on the Ed Sullivan show to be recognized on or near D-Day.

Me, grandmother, & me -I am in front of my Grandma Viola Ridley Petty and my uncle Osmo Petty.  Osmo was in the Navy.  His brothers, Leonard, Roy, and Wallace considered Osmo the smartest of the Petty siblings.

I too would be in the Navy in about 20 years, mostly in the Helicopter Squadron HU-4, home station NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey 08733 (Hey look!  I still remember the zip code).

Rocky's late  father-in-law, Sabrina's father,
O'Neal Sexton was in the Army, stationed in South Korea, where he met Sabina's mother-to-be, Chong.

1st cousin - Jerry Hunter was a F-105 Pilot.  He was shot down in Vietnam,  25 May 1966,.  He gave is life.  Hunter Park in Douglasville, Georgia, is named in his memory.

Its a Small World

Yesterday evening at the GOBAG meeting Jennings Patterson was told some of us  lot by lot of the who his grandfather sold property to, who at one time owned about the whole tract of land. When he got to the corner of Rose Lane and Marble Mill he said the Ellis family lived there. My mother-in-law, as a kid, lived across Rose Lane on the other corner. Her father died in that house.

Back to the Ellis family: They had a son named Dink. Dink was in the same explorer troop I was in, that Maple Avenue Methodist Church sponsored. Dink was a studious little kid.  The bunch I belonged to was sort of rambunctious.

Years later when I was a window clerk at the Post Office I waited on Dink one time..  He looked like a middle-aged business man who was deadly serious.  At the moment he was deadly serious in rrenewing his pass port and putting a rush on it.  I tried to jar his memory  of who I was, his old co-scout in the same Explorer troop and I don’t think he actually thought about that.  I didn’t register in his memory at all – as usual.

Dink had a brother.  I forgot his first name.  When I was stationed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, a guy by the last name of Ellis checked into our squadron.   I think his name was Mike Ellis, but I am not sure.   I processed him in.  I asked where was he from.  Georgia, he said.  I said so was I, what part of Georgia.  He said it was a little town near Georgia Tech.   A little town near by the name of Marietta.  A little town near Georgia Tech?  I wondered why he didn’t just  say a little town near Atlanta?

I told him so was I.  What part of Marietta.  He said up by the hospital.  I asked him exactly what streets and he said on the corner of Rose Lane and Marble Mill Road.  I asked him did he have a brother named Dink and he said he did.  I told him Dink and I was in the scouts together.  He was a friendly person and for the next week or two we had drinks at happy hour of the E.M. Club every evening.   Small world.

During our short friendship period I told my family via mail about the Ellis kid in Marietta.  My mother reported back to me that the Ellis guy was a cousin of mine.  I forgot how she said, but I think we are related through the Tysons.   How she could rake up kin was always amazing.   I wished I had taken notes.

He got assigned to a helicopter detachment aboard an icebreaker ship in the Arctic for six months and that was the last I saw of him.

Who Do I Think I Am? Wow! Part 41

Back to my great great great grandfather William Hargraves/Job Tyson. His father, which was my 4-greats grandfather, Job Tyson, as a teenager, played a prank of the red coats. I don’t know what the prank was but he was caught and the normal punishment for the folks to show any kind rebellion against the British was hanging. For some strange reason General Cornwallis forgave him and gave him a pardon. Which might have been a fate worth than death. It looked as if he and Cornwallis were buddy buddy. After the war, he did not want to be labeled a Tory. Tories got stripped of their land and sometimes sent to England.
Job got a petition up signed by his siblings and others stating that was a rebel against the British the same as they were.

This may be the reason that when Winston adopted her young brother she changed his name from Job, which he shared with his father, to Eugene Hargraves Tyson.
Here is what I have:

Branded a Tory? Frederick TYSON (brother) signed a petition for Job TYSON, classified as Tory.

North Carolina Colonial Records, Vol 16, pages 580-81 shows the following:
Petition from Pitt Co., NC, Martainborough, 1 Apr 1782. For pardon for Mr. Job TYSON (who broke his parole from Lord Cornwallis and went to South Carolina). Signed by numerous citizens including Aaron TISON, Frederick TISON, Cornelius TISON, William TISON, Jonathan TISON, and many others.

Leonardo Andrea File, page 6, #32:
A petition signed 1st day of April 1782 re Job TYSON, now a resident in the State of South Carolina and who desired to return to his home in Pitt Co., NC.

"Job TYSON as a very young man had taken a brave part in the Revolution with the American forces, etc., etc. When Charleston was captured, Job TYSON took a parole from Lord Cornwallis and because of that, he was now classified as a Tory"

The petition was to allow Job TYSON to visit his family in Pitt Co., NC and to take from his name the stigma of being a Tory.

Years Ago and also Years Before That

In today's MARIETTA DAILY JOURNAL there is a reprint of an article from their July 9, 1908 issue. Over 101 years ago.

The article is about the Kennesaw Chapter of the U.D.C. (United Daughters of the Confederacy) unveiling the Confederate Memorial at Marietta's Confederate Cemetery.

According to the article it was a big event. People dressed in their finest and most elite of the southern elite were the speakers.

Above is a picture of my great aunt, Lela Octavia "Tade" Tyson Carr (1886 - 1857). I am guessing she posed with the memorial very shortly after the dedication, maybe that same day.

Aunt Tade lived near Acworth Beach. As kids we would briefly visit her while waiting on daddy to pick us up after we had a day of fun on the beach. She died not too many years after that little segment of our lives.

3 Tysons in a Yard

These are three of my grandmother Minnie Tyson Hunter’s siblings. From left to right, Ed Tyson, Anne Tyson Crowder, and Will Tyson.

I think the picture was taken in the front yard of the Hunter house on Manget Street by the placement of the overhead tree foliage and the telephone pole. If I could see me dangling from a limb, I would know for sure.

3 Tyson Sisters

Three Tyson Sisters

These three sisters are Annie Alice Tyson Crowder (1893-1979), Lela Octavia “Tade” Tyson Carr 1886 – 1957), and my grandmother Minnie Victoria Tyson Hunter (1879-1948).

They were the daughters of Obediah Hargraves Tyson (1852-1919) and Nancy Elizabeth Huey (1854-1938).

See how Tade holds her head back at an angle – she appears to be judgmental and does not approve of what she sees. Don’t let it bother you, that was her natural look. She lived close to Acworth Lake Beach, only a block or two away. My sister Frances and I dropped by to visit her from time to time when we went to the beach – well, at least two times anyway.

They were all born, along with their other sisters and brothers near the intersection of Highway 92 and Bells Ferry Road in Cherokee County, just a mile or so from the Cobb County line.

In fact, I received an email today from a historical landmark researcher concerning the old Tyson property – here is part of it:

The Bells Ferry & Hwy. 92 area also has some historical significance. During June 10-12, 1864, Union General Kennard Garrard, commanding the Army of the Cumberland's 2nd. Cavalry Division, consisting of three separate brigades, was camped at the Tyson family farm near the intersection. At that time in Union reports and a map that Garrard submitted to General William T. Sherman, showed the location as "Tyson's Crossroads". From that point, the Union cavalry moved east on Hwy. 92 to Canton Road where they skirmished with Confederate cavalry of General Wheeler.

Aunt Annie

This is my great aunt Annie Tyson Crowder (1893-1979) as a teenager. She and my grandmother were sisters. The way she is holding those flowers she looks like a disenchanted teenager. She was born between Woodstock and Acworth in the area of Hwy 92 and Bells Ferry Road. She married Tom Crowder and they lived in the Fair Oaks area of Marietta. They had two children. One, a daughter, never married and her son was killed in WWII. Her son and his wife had a son named Terry which Annie had a great love for. Terry is one of those who only gets to see his birth date come around every four years. What day of what month was he born?

Terry and I were playmates in the 40s.

His mother remarried the heir of a big-name food company. And they moved away. I saw him at his aunt’s funeral in the 90s, and I am not sure he remembered me, although we played together almost every day for a couple of years.

Somebody ought to write an article about me in The Reader’s Digest under the title, “The Most Forgettable Character I Have Ever Met.”

Stanley & Kin

These two pictures were taken when my uncle Stanley returned from doing his part in WWII.

Stanley fought on the Beaches of Normandy, on D-Day, December 6th, 1944. He didn’t like to talk about it.

In one picture he has his arms around two of his aunts, who are sisters. On the left is Tade Tyson Carr and on the right is Anne Tyson Crowder.

The other picture, a couple more people have been added: Anne’s daughter Evelyn Crowder and Stanley’s nephew Jimmy.

Notice that Tade, no matter what, has a disapproving look or sneer on her face.

All in these two pictures are dead now.

Tyson Sisters

This is my grandmother with her two sisters. The one of the left is Anne, then Octavia (Tade), and my grandmother Minnie Tyson Hunter is on the far right.

Notice how Tade is looking disapprovingly at Minnie? I think Tade did that a lot: look at Minnie in a judgmental way. I wonder why.

Frank and Minnie

These were my grandparents Frank and Minnie. By their looks and the fact they are both alive, I would estimate the time the picture about 1946. Minnie died in 1948 at age 69, Frank died two years later.

You may recall a previous blog where I told of Frank saving my life after my pajamamas caught on fire. That happened after between 1948 and 1950 (Frank died in 1950).

Herbert and Ed

This is my a picture of my uncle Herbert and my great-uncle Ed on the prowl. That looks like a female on a horseless carriage (for real) or a horseless surry. Uncle Ed was born in 1888 and Herbert was born in 1901. From that, I would guesstamate that the picture was taken about 1921 or 1922.

At the time they were both single and fancy-free. What were they going to do, take the horses place to give the young lady a ride?

Brothers Ed & Will

You have met my great uncles Ed and Will before.

Ed was sporting a WWI uniform. Will was sitting in a touring car prop in a portrait studio.

They lived about 1000 feet from one another since they left their parents' household, but rarely saw each other I understand. So, this is a rare picture of them together.

I wonder what they are talking about or thinking. Each is probably scheming on how to get his hands on the other's money.

Both of them are proof that you CAN take it with you.

Speaking of Car... Carr, whatever

Speaking of old cars and Uncle Will. Here is his sister, Octavia "Tade" with her real old car.... and incidentally, that is her married name Carr.

Records show she married E.G. Carr. When I was a preteen I used use her big old house as a pickup point for either my sister or father. She lived only a block from Acworth Beach, which was a fun place to go and hangout.

Her husband died before I met him and they had no children. I remember her as an old snoot who was very judgmental but also very accommodating.
