This picture was taken during my parents' courting phase.  Left to right:  The first couple are my parents, Ed Hunter  and Janie Petty;  the second lady I do not know, I think her name might be Jonnie Rollins; the next lady is  my mother's older sister, Opal Petty; and the next couple  is Lois Carter and her date.  I don't think her date in this picture was  her future husband , Toy Moon, they probably had not met yet.   Lois like Opal and Janie (and maybe Jonny Rollins) were from the hills of north Georgia who had come to Marietta to work.

They were young and then they married, multiplied,  grew old,  and died, like we all will.

Reliving the Civil War

We went to the Marietta Museum of Historylast night  to hear David W.  Vaughn show and talk about his collection of Confederate Soldiers portraits made on tintypes /daguerreotypes .  In the museum he has an exhibition that will be on display through August the 30th.... hey!  That's today!

Davie gave a very well versed educational lecture.  He will buy a picture from usually a dealer and research the person in the picture.  He looks for clues in the picture, which tells more of the story.   I think it would be a very interesting and awarding hobby,  and looking for clues is exactly what I do in my genealogy research.  He had a slide show of 40 of his daguerreotypes and the behind the scenes research that went into them and what various things in the picture might tell you.  David Vaughn has surely become an expert of Civil War battles and troop movements with all the research he has done.

Not only that but they had refreshments!

And I saw my high school science teacher Clara Howell.  We run into each other at all things like this.

William D. Petty (my g-grandfather's brother)

Here is another one in my collection.  Evidently, it is of a young couple.  The handsome young man  was a dashing officer.  You can tell he was a good officer because of his alertness and wry look -  he was a handsome brute, in any time period.  They had this picture taken at a portrait studio in Helen, Georgia.  Afterwards, the dashing handsome officer  reported to the unit he was to be over.  But, as Sherman said, "War is Hell" and when he reported he heard  about the statistic that more young good looking dashing officers are shot in the back by their own men than in front from enemy fire.  He dashed right back to the arms of his wife.

Old Selma, Alabama, Post Card

Main Street, Selma, Alabama.  This is the city that the authorities had a confrontation with Afro-Americans who wanted to register to vote in 1965.

Of course this post card is much earlier.  It was probably before automobiles.  See that post in the middle of the street?  What do you suppose that is?  Have you ever heard of a "whipping post"?

My Petty Family Piictures

My mother’s maiden name was Petty. This video is mostly about her and her immediate kin.

Mama’s Petty family came to Fannin County, Georgia, in about 1840 or so, and her direct line crossed over the mountains to Murray County after the Civil War. On down the line her parents and older siblings moved to Gillette, Wyoming, and got land through a homestead act. In Gillette is where my mother was born.

They found they could hardly make a living on the prairie and moved back to Murray County, Georgia. There their biggest crop was cotton. After their father died they had a hard time making a living there too.

My mother and some of her sisters moved to Marietta to work in the hosiery mills.

Also I would like to point out the story behind the big boulder everyone posed on. There was a cave there. It was a cave with Indian relics. The Petty boys explored some of it but for safety reasons did not go back too far. The State of Georgia highway department came along and bought big rocks from farmers to pave the Cleveland Highway. William Elijah Joseph Petty so them big embedded rocks and boulders which they had to dynamite to loosen and make a size they could work with. They dynamite sealed the cave.

The above will give you an idea of the story outline of the Petty pictures here.

Old Hunter Pictures Galore

Through about 35 years of family research I have compiled a sizable pile of old pictures. This pile is my Hunter pile. There are a lot I left out, but wanted to keep it to a reasonable lenght, time-wise.

I tried to arrange the pictures on the video to be in date sequence. I probably made a mistake or two. That's me.

Old Pictures and Information on the Back

I enjoy looking at old pictures from another time. It is important, while the memory is still fresh, to write on the back to tell who's who, dates, and anything else pertinant. You will be doing somebody a favor.

Here is a good example with my mother-in-law's handwriting:

Speaking of Prison Again

When I first got out of the Navy I went to work for the Atlanta News Agency. The Atlanta News kept most of north Georgia supplied in magazine.

I was a route man. I went into a convenience store, a drug store, or some other store that sold magazines and took a quick inventory of the magazines that had on hand. When I turned in my inventories an office staff would quickly go over it and determine what to send the each store on their next delivery.

Sometimes they would supply us with books to unload on the stores. They usually were not magazines but books to push off on the people that sold our magazines.

Once they gave me several boxes of coloring books. I think there were almost a thousand coloring books I had to try to sell to some poor store. I quickly found no one wanted the coloring books..

After talking to other route men I think the idea was to sell them the books knowing full well they would return them for credit in a week or two. In the meantime, in house inventory was performed… and guess what? You don’t have to pay taxes on books and magazine that are not in the building.

So where was I going to unload almost 1,000 coloring books? Nobody wanted them.

The Federal Pen at the end of the Boulevard in Atlanta was on my route. That was my next stop.

Ahah! I wrote out a bill for the number of coloring books and backed up to their loading dock and took them out of the truck. I had the guard sign for it, I gave him his copy of the bill and went on my way, smirking on the long driveway to get the heck out of there.

As far as I know the coloring books were a hit, not one was returned.

A couple of years later Anna and I went to an art show at the Federal Pen. Some of the art was fantastic. They didn’t sign their names, they signed their number. The prices were reasonable so we bought three canvases.

Who knows, I may have had a hand inspiring them.

Vanishing Cobb Picture Project Presented

Yesterday we took my mother-in-law to the Vanishing Cobb Picture presentation at the Marietta History Museum. I didn't count heads as I sometimes do, but it looked like twenty to thirty people showed up.

We took her because number one it is interesting and you get to know about your county.

And number two because she lent the museum over 100 pictures to be scanned and I lent them about 80. Between both of us we contributed over 200 pictures to the Vanishing Cobb Project.

The Curator Amy Reed said so far they have received over 1,000 pictures. On a computer slide-show format she showed to the audience probably sixty or so. Amy did an excellent job explaining details of certain pictures, how to figure out the time frame, digital pictures vs the old fashion Kodak kind. She knew all about preserving photographs and how to get the most information out of them.

Four of the pictures are some we lent them:

Top photo: The Ferry is Roger’s Ferry with Buck Jones with his mule taking a ride over the Chattahoochee River.

The funeral of the baby with the siblings standing around – the oldest girl is my mother-in-law, now 89 years old

The mother holding a kid with her daughter beside her… I’m the one being held by my Mama and my sister is on the ground. The yard is in the Clay Homes in about 1944. The building in the background is a vocational training building to teach home coming soldiers a trade. I don’t know who the little boy is standing. I thought about taking a bow.

The kid with the goat is my mother-in-law’s first cousin, Charles Loy Foster.

The museum has four or five big volumes of these pictures in Thumbnail size that you are welcome to look at. If you want one I’m sure they will be happy to print it off for you – for a fee.

Old Cobb County Pictures

If you are older than 55 and like to see old pictures of Cobb County that will probably bring back memories I think you will enjoy visiting The Marietta History Museum tomorrow at 11:30am. Curator Amy Reed will present some old pictures from the museum’s Vanishing Cobb collection.

Or you may be from another area and are very interested in Cobb. So, it may be an something academic for you to do to learn more about your community.

Me? I’ll probably be the one dabbing my eyes with Kleenex.

It is a brown-bag thing, so bring your lunch if you want.

My Petty Genealogy Part 26

On this report the heads of the families are g-g-uncles and aunts, except the last head, William Elijah Joseph Petty and Frances Viola are my grandparents. Although they have been dead a long time it doesn't mean they "were" my grandparents. They always will be my grandparents.

Also, on this report if a person does not reproduce the last entry you will see is as children. On the other hand, if they do reproduce they appear again, on down the line as the head of the households. I mentioned this because the two oldest of my grandparents kids, Georgia and Tom did not reproduce. So, this was the last chance to show some of their pictures in this continuation report.

Cecil played the banjo and another string instrument-. He also was a movie collector. He had a little building in the back yard that he had a movie projector and a huge collection of western movies. Hoppalong Cassidy, Tom Mix, Lash LaRue, The Durango Kid, and more.

In the fall in Atlanta had the Southeastern Fair at the Lakewood Fairgrounds. Every year at that time, the Grants would come down from Chattanooga and stay a couple of days. Georgia would stay in Marietta to visit siblings and Cecil would go to the Southeastern Fair alone.

Georgia and Cecil both were very short people. And drove a small car for the times - a Crosby. Cecil was bald headed. Once (during Southeastern Fair season), when they were visiting, I was about four years old, I asked Cecil could I spin my top on his head.

On 4 November 1958, Cecil was on top of his wooden building in the back of the house making repairs to the roof. He had a metal hammer. The nail he hit an electrical wire, and in turn, electrocuted Cecil. He died fifteen days before his fifty-seventh birthday.

Years Ago and also Years Before That

In today's MARIETTA DAILY JOURNAL there is a reprint of an article from their July 9, 1908 issue. Over 101 years ago.

The article is about the Kennesaw Chapter of the U.D.C. (United Daughters of the Confederacy) unveiling the Confederate Memorial at Marietta's Confederate Cemetery.

According to the article it was a big event. People dressed in their finest and most elite of the southern elite were the speakers.

Above is a picture of my great aunt, Lela Octavia "Tade" Tyson Carr (1886 - 1857). I am guessing she posed with the memorial very shortly after the dedication, maybe that same day.

Aunt Tade lived near Acworth Beach. As kids we would briefly visit her while waiting on daddy to pick us up after we had a day of fun on the beach. She died not too many years after that little segment of our lives.

Will You Miss It When It Is Gone? Nope!

This picture was taken on Roswell Road in Marietta. If the photographer pivoted to the right he will looking at Miss Georgia Dairy, the future home of The Big Chicken. We can look straight ahead, across the intersection which is and was called The 4-Lane…. And to newcomers who looked on a map it is Cobb Parkway.

This intersection separates North Cobb Parkway (or North 4-Lane) and South Cobb Parkway (or South 4-Lane).

Across the intersection is Roswell Street. The 4-Lane separates Roswell from Street to Road.

On the other side of the road at the corner on the left is a Standard Service Station. Just beyond that is an unpainted wood structure.

I am just guessing, but I think the unpainted wood structure is some sort of warehouse for a small company or a route man of some type. I remember in our neighborhood we had a similar unpainted wood structure that tea route men used as a ware house to come by and pick up stock before going on the road.

Back to this corner and the unpainted wood structure: I rode by that building hundreds of time, maybe thousands, east and west and never thought of it. It was just part of the background.

Then in time it outlived its usefulness and was demolished. Probably other things took it place and other things came and went.

I didn’t even notice it was gone.

Then when I saw this picture my memory glands had a rush. It all came back to me. The unpainted wooden structure looked perfectly natural there and I had my head in a daze I didn’t even miss it until about 55 years later I realized it is gone for ever… now, I will feel guilty I didn't miss it.

Now, in that spot, Los Reys Mexican Restaurant’s parking lot is there, in case you are interested.

NOTE - The below has just been added. Monty Calhoun filled me in with page 2:
The barn in your picture was owned by Mrs. Leech. She was an old widow that would chase us out of there on a daily basis.
Having been raised in Pine Forest, this was one of our adventures that rated right up there
with sleeping on top of Dodd St. School, riding our Flexy Racers in the sewer system, and
shooting cars, at night, with our pea-shooters on the 4 lane highway. Some of our gang,
that you would know: Julian Suggs, Ronnie Witcher, Rupert and Carroll Raines, June Lyle, Nancy Mathis, Jean Baker, Ozzie Huff, Buddy Ball, Neil Taylor, Richard Townsend, Larry Brewer, Dianne Ford, Joe Thomas...and the list goes on.

My Petty Genealogy part 19

The main ones below, the one with the regular 3 digit numbers, such as the first one below, 155 (William D. Petty) are my great great grandfather Elijah Petty's children from two marriages.

I should have posted the above picture of his daughters earlier, but it got by me. Now, there is no good place to post it, so I guess the above is as good as any.

155. WILLIAM D.7 PETTY (ELIJAH6, ZACHARIAH5, WILLIAM4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, HUBERT1 PATEY) was born 29 Nov 1834 in , , NC, and died 21 Jul 1917 in , Murray, Ga. He married (1) MINDY. He married (2) JANE 'LIZZIE' HARRIS 23 Dec 1857 in , Murray, Ga70. She was born 09 Apr 1841, and died 30 Aug 1899. He married (3) MAGGIE S. 19 Apr 1906 in , Murray, Ga71. She was born Abt. 1849, and died 24 Aug 1914.

Notes for WILLIAM D. PETTY:

There is also a photograph on a "post card". On its back is written:
Daddy's Grandfather & Grandmother W.D. Petty.
This picture is so old, that the black and white color is getting "shiney"
He is very elderly, a long white beard, and white hair. He is sitting in a straight-backed chair. He too has on his "buryin" suit, vest and tie. Must be a black suit. The wife next to him is not identified by name. She is standing just to the right of his shoulder. She has on an ankle length dress.with huge leg-o-mutton sleeves, to her wrists. It must be black too. the collar stands up near her neck, with a white ruffle on it,( lace maybe??) And there is a ruffle from this collar that goes part-way down the front. She is holding a small pocketbook in her hand. Behind them, is a very old cabin.............very rough in appearance. You can see the window glass behind them. There is a blanket of bedspread of some sort hanging on the wall of the cabin behind them........almost as if it was supposed to be a backdrop for them to stand in front of for the picture taking. There is no grass.....just dirt all around where they are standing/sitting.And there is no under-pinning/foundation to the cabin.

Date of burial: 4-19, 1917; address: Fletcher

Undertaker: J.W. Misener [could be Wisener]

____________

My notes:

*Nancy's birth data and spelling of name disagrees with what I have. This
gives date of birth as "Nov 24, 1842," which disagrees with the date given
on her tombstone: 14 Sep 1841, and the spelling, "Nancy C. Murray." [I
guess you could say that second date is "carved in stone."] Also, middle
initial here is given as "K." All other sources give "C." I would hazard a
guess that "Catherine" is her middle name, since that's the first name I tho
ught of that can be spelled with a "C" or a "K." But of course, that's
speculation, and we'll probably never know.

**Notice that the informant apparently gives Nancy's maiden name instead of
her mother's when asked. Probably, he misinterpreted the question to mean,
"your" mother's maiden name.

Notice also that here, the surname is spelled "Pettie," while Nancy's
father's surname is spelled, "Petty." The surname "Murray" is often
mispelled in documents, as here, but I know the descendants spell their name
"Murray."

Also, please note that descendants earlier told me that Nancy was later
disinterred and moved to Hyland Cemetery, Lawton, Comanche Co., Oklahoma,
because the cemetery at Elgin had no caretaker and was neglected. E.A.
Murray (the informant) would be Nancy's son, Elias Andrew Murray. Her late
husband [W.S. Murray] is not listed on the certificate--it only asks for
marital status, not names.

When I was a child my family visited Alice, Nancy, and Wesley several times. They lived in a big two story house on a hill behind their brother Jim Petty. Up the long dirt road just before entering the yard area was a barn on the left where Wesley kept a couple of horses, probably for plowing. There was a scenic rolling hill pasture with a house on the other side which they rented to a family. In the pasture were cattle. We ate with them and I remember that the milk, unprocessed, straight out of the cows was very bitter.
I also remember looking around and finding a big long rifle or a shotgun. I was playing with it when the family saw me. Wesley quickly took it away from me, it was loaded.

D - Day of Janie's Birth

Not only is today D-Day but it is also D Day of my mother's birth, June 6, 1918, on the prairies of Gillette, Campbell County, Wyoming.

They named her Ethel America with the surname Petty. America at the time was having a Patriotic fever and her oldest brother pleaded for his parents to name her America.

Later her nickname became "Janie".

She would have been 91 today.

Notes for EVA BELL HUNTER:
I'm starting to do some research into my grandmother's family. Sadly many details are missing from the oral history that she was left with.
Her mother was Eva Bell Hunter (born 8/21/1895), who was the daughter of Charles Jefferson Hunter and Paralee Dobbs (who died when Eva was 2, so 1897/1898). My grandmother says that Eva had a brother that moved to Texas and was a dentist. I belive this person is the A.C. Hunter you mentioned in your blog last October.
Any information you could share with me regarding Charles Jefferson Hunter and his family, so that I can confirm or rule out this relation, would be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Christie Sullivan
