What a Difference a Decade Makes..

Click on image to be able to read it.

1910 Census

What a difference a decade makes.  If you are a Prance relative you might find this interesting.  First is the 1910 Census.  The top family is the J.O. Prance family.  It show J. O. age 29, his wife Lessie (Wright) age 18, and their child Henry P(aul), age 1/2.

1930 Census

Twenty years later on the 1930 Census, middle page, the J.O Prance family has grown.  Paul (Henry P.) is not 20, and he has a  three brothers  Clifford (15), Hubert (13), and Earl (10) and one sister Mary(5).

1940 Census

Ten years later, on the 1840 Census,  just lower than the center we find Henry P(aul),  age 29, as head of the household.  Also listed is his first wife Alzia (26), and their three sons James P. (9), Tommie D. (4), and Julian R. (2).

The Bettis Children

These are  Bob and Ida Lavonia Prance Bettis's four sons.  Bob and Ida had  ten children,  6 boys and 4 girls.  The four oldest children were boys, and I think these were probably the only kids at the time of the picture was taken, which I estimate to be 1906.  The first daughter was born in 1907, after when I believe this picture was taken.   Based on that,  from left to right:  James Toliver Cecil Bettis (1900-1969), Reuel Andrew Bettis (1901-1968), Herschel Raymond Bettis (1903-1987), and Isaac Landrum Bettis (1898-1975).

Great Greats

The above picture is Anna's mother Marie and her great great grandkids, that was taken six or so years ago.  I posted it on Facebook yesterday.

Ironically, hours after I had posted it, the same boy, now age 11, and his grandmother dropped by Marie's for a visit.  We were already there.   His grandmother is Anna's niece.  I found it interesting that two people in the same room were great great to one another.  How many people can claim to have personally known their great great grandparent or great great grandchild?

Three of my great grandfathers fought in the Civil War over 150 years ago, and they were not even "great great".

My great grandfather William fought in the Civil War and his great grandfather William Trammell fought in the Revolutionary War.

J.O. Prance Gets a Haircut

This  is the cover of  the latest issue (Spring 2014) of GEORGIA BADCKROADS magazine.   I have been subscribing to it since it was called NORTH GEORGIA TRAILS..... really!

When I picked  up the mail yesterday  as soon as I saw the cover I knew immediately  who was getting a haircut and nearly correct on who the barber was.  I have seen this picture countless of times.

I  thought it was Anna's great uncle Bob Bettis cutting Anna's grandfather J.O. Prance's hair.  It was not Bob Bettis cutting J. O.'s but his son, probably the oldest Cecil Bettis  doing barber duty.

James Oscar Prance (1880 - 1961) was a farmer and lived on Hawkins Store Road.  He and his wife Lessie  Mae Wright Prance  (1891-1957) are buried at Noonday Baptist Church  near Marietta, Georgia.   James Cecil Bettis (1900-1969) and his wife  Clara Voyles  (1905-1994) are buried at Sandy Plains Baptist Church, also near Marietta.

Cecil's mother was Ida Lovonia  Prance (1878-1958) and his father Bob Bettis (1868 - 1961) are also buried at Sandy Plains Baptist Church..  Ida and J.O. are siblings.

The barn and outbuildings in the picture is part of Bob Bettis's farm.  Bob Bettis Road in Marietta was their driveway before it was a road.

I'm sure the picture came from the VANISHING GEORGIA PROJECT.  About 35 years ago my mother-in-law Marie and I carried a lot pictures to the Kennesaw House to the Vanishing Georgia Project.  Local historian Bowling Yates sat down with one person at a time and wrote down the people in the pictures.

The main reason I put this post on a blog is that my sister-in-law, Thelma, who is spending a few winter months in Florida, can read it on her electronic gizmo.  Hi Thelma!

The Hawkins' Store Theft

Charles Gordon Hawkins, age 93, of East Point passed away Friday, August 10, 2012.  Graveside service will be Monday, August 13, 11 AM at Noonday Baptist Church, Marietta.  Arrangements by Medford-Peden Funeral Home.
- parts of an Obituary in the Atlanta Journal Constitution last week.

Charles Hawkins' parents owned the Hawkins Store that Hawkins Store Road off Canton Road in Marietta got its name.  The store has been gone for many years.

My father-in-law, Paul, when a young man, just married, worked in the store as a clerk.  He died in 2000.

Five or six years before he died he received in the mail a letter with no return address.  It had cash money in it and a letter.

The letter was anonymously sent.  It explained said that he sees Paul every Sunday at church and  they have been friends for years.  He said many years ago when Paul worked in the store when Paul wasn't looking the mysterious person stole something in the store, I forgot if it was a small amount of cash or an object like candy or whatever.  He went on to say that he felt Paul probably had to pay for the missing item (or cash) out of his own pocket.  The letter went on to say it has been on his concious ever since.  He figures with bank rates interest about how much the missing amount would be worth the day he wrote the letter.

In the above picture I think Paul is the 2nd from the right.  This looks to be about the time of the theft mentioned above.  These boys looks like they are probably Paul's friends.  I wonder if one of them knows something Paul won't know until about 70 years later?

Interesting.

Who Do I Think I am? Wow! part 34

The previous Who Do I Think I Am? featured my great great grandfather Robert Cabel Tyson. I mentioned they had 8 children, one was of course, my great grandfather Obediah Hargraves Tyson. Another one was my wife Anna's great great grandmother, Eliza Frances "Fannie" Tyson (1844-1927). She married James Ephram Kuykendall (1848-1915).

James Ephram and Fanny Tyson Kuykendall family.

They had 10 children. One was Louisa "Lula" Kuykendall (1868-1923). She married Henry Gable Wright (1857-1936). they had 5 children, one being Anna's grandmother Lessie Mae Wright (1891-1957). Lessie married James Oscar Prance (1880-1961) and they were Anna's grandparents.

Which means my wife is my 3rd cousin, once removed.

Old Pictures and Information on the Back

I enjoy looking at old pictures from another time. It is important, while the memory is still fresh, to write on the back to tell who's who, dates, and anything else pertinant. You will be doing somebody a favor.

Here is a good example with my mother-in-law's handwriting:
