Throwback Thursday: Wright Family on Lookout Mountain

Throwback Thursday:  About 1931.  Anna's father's mother side of the family, the Wright family visiting Lookout Mountain, Umbrella Rock, which overlooks the Tennessee River (squint and you can see it).

Surely there is an elevator or easy steps leading up in the back.

The Wright Brothers (not the airplane an bicycle ones)

The Wright Brothers, c1890.  The Wright family members lived around Canton Road north of Kurtz Road and up the road to Woodstock, Georgia.  Not to be  the flying Wright Brothers.

A photographer probably came to town, set up a plain backdrop and took group photos for a fee.  These six brothers are the sons of Isaac and Loveuia Adeline St. John Wright:  They are Henry Gable, William "Bill", George  "Dave", James T. "Jim", Berry Jackson "Kid", and Simon Wright.

I don't know what order the names are in, in relation to the photograph, like left to right (like I'm used to) or what.

The only person I think I can identify is Henry Gable Wright, which is Anna's great grandfather on the far right, or is he next to the last?

These two other pictures are Henry Gable Wright with his wife Lula Kuykendall and Henry sitting with his legs crossed.

James and Fannie are Anna's great great grand parents.  Fannie is the daughter of Robert Cabel Tyson (1821-1864) and Sarah Moody (1815-1896), my great great grandparents. Small world!

The young Adults are Avie and Arch Kuykendall.

James and Fannie Tyson Kuykendall had the following children:

Umbrella Rock on Lookout Mountain & Marietta Familie

The first picture is Anna's father's mother side of the family, the Wrights.

The second picture is Anna's mother's father side of the family, the Moons.

They are on Umbrella Rock on  Lookout Mountain, which part is in Tennessee and part is in Georgia.  They are in the Tennessee part in Point Park, a Civil war sight.  The black and white pictures do not show it but they also had a great view of the Cobra Bend of the Tennessee River (below).

The Wrights and Moons may or may not known each other.  But it is ironic that one of the Wrights, Lilla owned a neighborhood store on Canton Road at Kurtz Road in Marietta and the Moons on a neighborhood store on Roswell Street, across from Victory Drive in Marietta.... not that stores ownership  have anything to do with Umbrella Rock or the Tennessee River.

This is Anna's great aunt Maude Wright (1895-1975) and Lem Q. Guffin (1887-1969) on their wedding day August 13, 1916.

Last year I got to know Lem's nephew Steve Guffin.   My mother-in-law had some pictures, documents, and notes she wanted to hand over to the Guffin family for genealogical purposes.  I knew my friend Paul Roper had some dealing with a Guffin, which was William Steve Guffin.  I called him and he told me his uncle was Lem.  He also told me his brother does family research and would love to have what I had.  It took two or three meetings.  One was at Piedmont Baptist Church, where Steve is a big worker.... also, in this process I learned that Steve was well known in the antique car restoring community.  One time I ran into him a at Brandi's Hotdogs at a men's prayer service.

I carried some stuff to him at the body shop he owns on Glover Street.

The property on Glover Street that his company is on was the home of a friend a couple of years older than I was in my preteen years, Jack.
Jack was a year or two behind in school and he was in my class one year at Waterman Street Grammar School and kept me in stitches giggling at the wisecracks he whispered.

One time on the corner of Glover Street and Manget, in the Rich's side yard were a bunch of us kids... the older kids who smoked and us younger kids, who wanted to be like them.  Somehow or another the older boys agged Eddie Nichols and I into a fight.  I remember I didn't want to fight and Eddie Nichols was believing every word they older boys said that I said about him, which was making him madder and madder.... Jack was a ring leader.  I think it was Jack who pushed Eddie into me, or me into Eddie - whichever it caused Eddie to start wildly swinging his arms at me.

Eddie Nichols was mentally challenged.  I should say he meant to swing with both fists, but one of his hands was busy.  He was sucking on the back of it.  Every time he got nervous Eddie sucked on the back of one of his hands.

I hit him in the nose and broke it;  blood went everywhere, it got all over him.  He ran home crying.

His adult sister, who was responsible for him, came looking for who ever broke Eddie's nose.  I had already went home. The boys that agged us into a fight acted like they had no idea a fight took place.

In time Eddie forgot about it.  Maybe a year later we were playing in the loft of Eddie's grandfather's barn.  One so-called friend reminded Eddie I was the one that broke his nose.

Suddenly, Eddie pounced on me choking me with an iron strong grip.  I could not breath.  I thought I was about to be killed.

However, in our scuffling in the loft we rolled over a sheet of plywood that was not nailed down.  When we got to end the plywood tilted and like a dumped truck dumped us to the floor of the barn.   I landed, rolled to my feet and took off running like a rabbit.  I suppose Eddie laid there sucking the back of his hand, wondering what happened.
One thing leads to another doesn't it?

By the way, I was told last year at the Bell Reunion that Eddie Nichols is in prison for murder.

Lookout Mountain and the Wright Family

While the post about Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain's Point Lookout and the post that I metnioned the Wright family as one of Anna's family line are still warm, I thought I would pull out this picture.

It is the Wright family sitting on Umbrella Rock at Point Lookout on Lookout Mountain.

Who Do I Think I am? Wow! part 34

The previous Who Do I Think I Am? featured my great great grandfather Robert Cabel Tyson. I mentioned they had 8 children, one was of course, my great grandfather Obediah Hargraves Tyson. Another one was my wife Anna's great great grandmother, Eliza Frances "Fannie" Tyson (1844-1927). She married James Ephram Kuykendall (1848-1915).

James Ephram and Fanny Tyson Kuykendall family.

They had 10 children. One was Louisa "Lula" Kuykendall (1868-1923). She married Henry Gable Wright (1857-1936). they had 5 children, one being Anna's grandmother Lessie Mae Wright (1891-1957). Lessie married James Oscar Prance (1880-1961) and they were Anna's grandparents.

Which means my wife is my 3rd cousin, once removed.

Arch Kuykendall (1883 - ? ).

Arch F.. Kuykendall was the youngest son of James Ephrah Kuykendall (1848-1915) and Eliza Frances "Fannie" Tyson Kuykendall (1844-1927).

Fannie had a brother named Archibald Tyson. I bet Arch was named after him and he preferred the nickname Arch. I know I would.

I have no other information about Arch F. Kuykendall. He was probably born in Cherokee County, Georgia.

Enon Cemetery in Woodstock, Georgia

click picture to make it readable.

This is Enon Cemetery just north of downtown Woodstock. It has been around a long time. It did not occur to me until this time I drove up to take some more pictures of the latest relatives in residence it is on the edge of the Andersonville community, not to be confused with the city of Andersonville in the southwest part of Georgia that had one of the cruelest CSA War Between the States POW reported. Many books have been written about that Andersonville.

Not this Andersonville. This Andersonville is a laid back community with a lot of farms and country homes. It is where William A. Trammell/Hunter recuperated after he was wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

In the past several months Enon Cemetery was in the news. Many older markers were turned over and damaged. Even the body was stolen – one of the people that has been deceased the longest.

Here is one of the markers that I think was knocked over and damaged. Somebody did a good job repairing it.

Here is the Tippen family memorial marker. It memorializes the family for coming when it was a country reserved for Indians only, according to treaties. But, they broke the treaty and got a marker in their honor.

Arminda Hunter Poor was the only daughter of William A. Trammell/Hunter. She married Lewis Franklin Poor. Many of her children, grandchildren, and their spouses are buried at Enon. Arminda was so named because the lady that lived in the Andersonville community that nursed William back to health was named Arminda.

Here is the latest Poor buried at Enon. Lewis William Poor (Jun 17 1920 – 8 Jul 2007). Lewis was 87. He was cutting grass and afterwards didn’t feel so good. He was rushed to the hospital where he died. Lewis and I have met several times in the Wal-Mart parking lot halfway between his home and our home to share genealogy information. If a casual observer noticed us he/she would think a "deal was going down" between the "Over the Hill" gang.

A brother of Lewis, James Henry Poor died on his birthday.

Another Hunter. Jacie Hunter Ingram. Jacie’s father died as a young man. Jacie’s, her sister Lois, and mother was taken in by her grandparents William and Emaline Hunter.

Jacie Huner Ingram’s son Hunter Ingram and his wife Barbara At one time he was mayor of Woodstock. I visited him several times getting family information. Barbara died several years before he. He said more than once he missed her so much.

These are Anna’s g-g- grandparents Isaac and Adeline Saint John Wright. There are many Wrights buried in this cemetery that are also related to Anna. Isaac fought in the Civil War.

Apparently a man named Wolf was involved in an accident and he died and so did his two children. One child lasted a day longer. Sad.

The Family and the Crop

This is Ola E. “Ollive” Kuykendall, her husband D. F. Sheffield and their two children Archibald and Ethel. I only have two dates to work with here. Ollive was born 24 Jan 1879 and she married D. F. (Frank) in Cherokee County, Georgia, 20 Jul 1898.

Ethel, the oldest kid, looks about 8 or 9 years of age. I think an estimated date of the picture would be about 1910-11.

The back drop looks like crop of some kind. I have seen more than several pictures of a man or a family be photographed near their crop. It was something to be proud of.

The Wright Sisters

Not to be confused with the Wright Brothers.
I like the "downhome" look of this picture.
The one of the left is Lessie Wright, Anna's grandmother. The other two sisters: Maude who married Lem Guffin and Lilla, who never married.

Della Wright

This is Anna's great great aunt Odella I. "Della" Wright. She was born about 1876 and died as a young woman with cancer, I do not have the date.

The backing of the picture is a thick cardboard material. I think she probably died not long after this picture was made.

I meant for this posting to be launched tomorrow morning but I accidentally pushed the wrong button. I wonder if that is how WW III will start?

Maude Wright (1895-1975)

Here is another tin-type picture.

Maude is/was Anna's great aunt. She married Lem Guffin in 1916. They had no children. I remember going to her funeral right after we returned from Disney World.
