Georgia and Cecil both were very short people. And drove a small car for the times - a Crosby. Cecil was bald headed. Once (during Southeastern Fair season), when they were visiting, I was about four years old, I asked Cecil could I spin my top on his head.

On 4 November 1958, Cecil was on top of his wooden building in the back of the house making repairs to the roof. He had a metal hammer. The nail he hit an electrical wire, and in turn, electrocuted Cecil. He died fifteen days before his fifty-seventh birthday.

Notes for MARY ANN BRETT:
"Mad stones" are used to prevent rabies from bites of mad dogs and to remove poison from snakebites. Mary Brett Ridley, whoes family's mad stone originated from England, although supposedly from the maw of a buffalo. It was brought to America by her great-grandfather and passed down. It was the size of "the end of the thumb" and oval-shaped. When a victim arrived, generally one to three times a week, the stone would be boiled in fresh sweet milk. It was taken out with a spoon while warm would be applied to the wound. If the bite were rabid or poisonous the stone would stick like a magnet up to three hours. When it fell off the stone was again boiled in milk, which would turn green, and reapplied until the stone no longer stuck. It apparently worked every time, even when the victims were already foaming at the mouth. Ridley found that although mad dogs were likely to occur at any time, they were mainly encountered in the spring.
Ridley's complaint was that an afflicted person would arrive from a number of surrounding counties at all hours in the company of their entire family, who would be fed and bedded down with her family. Although her father charged a ten-dollar use of the stone, he used it for free on the poor, and the fee "just paid enough for part of the food they would eat."
Possession of the stone was apparently a burden. When Ridley's father died, a half-brother offered her possession of it, but she replied: "I don't want that thing." It was used a few times by him in Carroll County, and at last report reposed in a safe deposit box

Ridley Information

It is nice to find out about your ancestors. On doing genealogy with every family line I have came across a brick wall that I can't seem to break through.

Sometimes more information will arrive unexpectedly. Of course, the information may or may not be true.

Tonight, while minding my own business this email came from Anonymous about my Ridley family line:

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Ridley Genealogy 10 continued":

The Ridley's (horse riders) originate from the boarder country (no man's land) between England and Scotland. They were vagabonds and thieves eventually driven out and settling in Southern England, more specifically London and the West Country. The outlaw John Ridd (of Richard Doddridge Blackmore's Lorna Doone fame) is believed by some to be a corruption of the name Ridley, who were outlaws in the beautiful and wild countryside of Somerset and Devon in the 17th century. Bishop (Nicholas) Ridley was burnt at the stake with Hugh Latimer in 1555 for backing the wrong horse at the wrong time, the Church of England's independence from the Roman Catholic Church. Thank God, due to the efforts and sacrifice of Ridley and his ilk, the English eventually broke free from the strangle hold of the Catholic Church, prospered allowing the Anglo-Saxons to colonise and spread democracy, freedom and liberty throughout the world but more specifically laying the foundations of the free world in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. England's democracy, Parliament, system of government and rule of law has been copied throughout the world. Nicholas Ridley was one of the founding fathers of Singapore, a country created from nothing along with Hong Kong into one of the great trading centres of the world.

Notes for BEN KASH RIDLEY:
Due to the economical condition during the late 1920's and early 1930's, the hardships of farming and poor health of his father, Ben had to leave school and find work. While attending a social in the 'Frogtown' community of Trion, Ben met Iola Parris, who held the title of "Miss Trion" at the time.
He and Iola raised their family in Trion. When their family got larger they built a larger house and Iola's aunt Allie (Carver) CHANDLER came to live with them and kept the children while Iola and Ben worked.
On April 10, 1942, Ben was inducted into the United States Army at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He was in Company "G", 306th Infantry, Seventy-seventh Division, under the command of Captain Buckner M. CREEL, III.
At the time of his death, Ben was a first scout in the third platoon of Company "G" of 306 Infantry. During the night on the Island of Ie Shima, Ryukyus in the Pacidic Ben was wounded by enemy mortal shell while in the battle with the Japanese (well known war correspondent Ernie Pyle, died in the same battle). His body was exhumed on March 15 1949 and sent back to the U.S and buried in the National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.

Notes for GEORGIA IOLA PARRIS:
Iola was "Miss Trion".
She worked at the Trion Cotton Mill.
When Ben went into the Army Iola and the children moved in with her parents, who had left Trion and moved to Atlanta and now lived in Austell, Cobb County, Georgia. Iola and her father went to work at he Bell Aircraft Plant in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia.
In 1943, Iola and her father bought a farm with two houses in Douglas County, Ga., just outside of the Austell city limits.
In 1944, Iola bought a new house on Arlington Circle, Grove Park Community, in Atlanta, Georgia. She rented out her house on the farm. Since Iola did not drive at that time she would be on a trolley line. She and the children were living on Arlington Circle when Ben's death happened in the war (1945).
After the war, Iola and her four daughters moved back to the farm in Douglas County, Georgia, close to her family where they remained util their marriages.

Sumac Presb Church, Crandall, Murray County, Ga

I haven’t posted a cemetery in a long time (they are more work).

Sumac Presbyterian Church Cemetery is in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia, is northwest of Dalton, and almost directly north of Chatsworth, Georgia, on Hwy 225. The church and the cemetery is just several miles south of the Tennessee state line.

I have been to this cemetery a number of times. The place has a lot of relatives on my mother’s side of the family.

It is on a high hill or ridge and has a magnificent view of farms and the country side.

Addie Ridley Davis was my grandmother’s sister.

Ruby Ridley Dickson was my grandmother’s sister.

Walter Ridley was a challenged person. After their parents died my grandmother and her siblings took care of Walt. I remember him well. He always wore overalls. He is in Ruby and Babe Dickson’s plot.

James “Jim” Petty was my grandfather’s brother. He married Lillie Henry. Four of his children and their wives are also in the family plot.

Georgia Petty King was my grandfather’s cousin. My grandfather also had a daughter named Georgia.

Sarah Arrowood is the wife of Andrew Jackson Bookout.

Andrew Jackson Bookout is the son of my ancestor Jesse Bookout.

I am not related to the Arthur family, I just thought their marker was unique.

Clarence Bookout is Andrew Jackson Bookout’s son.

As mentioned above Jesse Bookout is my ancestor. He had an older stone or marker and the above replaced it. It is said he came to this area before 1832, which was before the white man was allowed and worked for Chief Vann, which was also forbidden – for a white man to be employed by and Indian.

Nova Bookout was married twice. One of her marriages was to V.C. Davis. V.C. Davis was also married to Addie Ridley, mentioned above.

Lizzy Lackey was married to a distant cousins, Elijah W. Petty.

Maggie was first the wife to T.J. Lackey and secondly to my ancestor’s brother William D. Petty. It appears to be something of a soap opera before TV going was going on.

Elijah Petty, son of William D. Petty, mentioned above.

Here is another Georgia Petty marker. Wait! I am confused.

J.N. Petty. A mystery.

W.D. Petty was my great grandfather’s brother. He was born in North Carolina, grew up in Fannin County, and moved to Murray County.

Andrew Pullen was a ancestor’s brother.

John Pullen is Andrew Pullen’s brother. Interesting, there is a marker by the parking lot at the beginning of the Cemetery down the road at Calvary Baptist Church – the marker thanks John for his donation for care of the cemetery.

Clarence Ridley is a distant cousin. I thought both markers are vital.

Luke and Sally Dunn were the parents of Clarence (above).

Thomas Jefferson Ridley and Maryetta Pullen are my ancestors. They are the parents of my grandmother; my mother’s mother’s parents.

William M. Ridley is another mystery.

I left out about a dozen pictures of stones hard to read, spouses, etc.

Calvard School 1913

This is the Calvard School, which appears to be a high school, in Cohutta, Georgia. Cohutta is in Murray County, several miles north of Chatsworth, Georgia. The picture was taken in 1913.

The ones mentioned below are/were relatives.

1st Row: The last person on the right is Henry Ridley, III. His grandfather was my ancestor.

2nd Row: The first person on the left is Melvin Ridley, son of William Ridley. He has crutches. I don’t know why he used crutches – he died a year about a year later in 1914.

3rd Row: The first person on the left is Robert “Bob” Ridley, my grandmother’s brother. The fourth person on that row is Henry Killian “Kate” Ridley, my grandmother’s cousin. He was married 5 times., but who’s counting? I think the first four wives died. I remember we visited him on his last marriage and his wife was chopping kindling wood. He said, she “swing a mean ax.” She outlived him.

5th Row: The first person is Charlie Caylor and the fourth person is his brother Willie Caylor, they were/are the grandsons of Henry Petty’s sister Harriet Ridley Caylor.

The 3rd person on the same row is Irvin Petty, my mother’s uncle. I don’t know if he was frostbit before or after this picture was taken - his brothers had to hold him down while his uncle, Willis Garret, a doctor cut off his toes.

Ridleys at Calvard School in Murray Co., Ga

Calvard School, Murray County, Georgia, 1913.

Notice, again, how the formation of the students are a row one sex, then the next row is the other sex?

For every male row there is a boy with the surname Ridley. Ridley was my grandmother’s surname. The had a first cousin in every male row. By the time this picture was taken she was married.

The last row also has Irwin Petty (3rd from left), my grandfather’s brother. Along that time Irwin’s brothers had to hold him down while his first cousin Doctor Willis Garrett cut off his frostbit toes.

The second row has all females except for the male teacher on the far left. The teacher was Melvin Ridley who died the next year in 1914. His cemetery marker told that he lived from 1886 to 1914 for a sum of 28 years. That is too young to die.

Pettys, Spouses, and 2 Ridleys

These are my mother's siblings and the siblings spouses, mother, and her mother's brother, or my mother's uncle Walt Ridley.

Walt is the one on the second row, about in the center. Poor Walt was mentally challenged. He walked 3 miles everyday to be near his sister. Then, in the evening he would would back home.

My mother is standing to Walt's left. Either my father is taking the picture or he was not part of the family yet.

House of Thomas Jefferson Ridley (1859-1939)

My ancestor's house.
About 1980 I drove all over the back roads of Murray County, Georgia, looking for it. and once I found it, what did I do? Take a picture of it of, course.
