SUNDAY FUNNIES - Goodman Beaver HELP

Superman was a good target for parody. He was big, strong, and just too good to be real.

This is from HELP! magazine #2, Vol 2, May 1962. It was written by HELP!’s editor Harvey Kurtzman and drawn by Will Elder. Earlier, in a MAD comic book Kurtzman wrote another Superman lampoon with Wally Wood as the artist.

A reoccurring Kurtzman naïve hero is Goodman Beaver. Goodman always was a do-gooder who always found himself surrounded by corrupt people but he always found something positive… or maybe you think he should find something positive…maybe he deserved to find something positive.

PLAYBOY magazine publisher Hugh Hefner more or less told Kurtzman if he gave Goodman Beaver a sex change and gave her a pair of tits he would hire him and Elder to do a series.

Thus, Annie Fanny was born.
