Desert Snow

Because us corn-fed Georgians get so bent out of shape when we get a little snow, G sent these pictures of her front and back yard in the desert in Nevada to let us know we are not the only ones to get a good dose of rare snow.

By the way, I hummed the title of this post in the same tune that "Wild Flower" was sung.

Dylan Thomas & Byron Reece

I am currently reading a book about my 4th cousin Byron Hubert Reece, MOUNTAIN SINGER by Raymond A. Cook.

Byron and the I are both descended from John Hunter.

Byron was a farmer and a poet. In the field of written prose and poetry some people consider him a genius. As you know, I’m not qualify to say.

Byron worked up to 18 hours a day to support a meager existence for him and his sickly parents in Union County, Georgia. Writing was only a thing he could do in his little spare time.

Last night we watched the movie EDGE OF LOVE, directed by John Maybury, and written by Sharman MacDonald, about a segment of life of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. The segment was about how Thomas got through World War II. It appeared he partied all way through it and was drunk most the time.

The movie claimed to be a true account of Dylan Thomas, his wife Caitlin, his life long friend Vera Phillips, and her husband William Killick.

The two poets lived two completely different lives in the same decade (the 40’s). One was partying and got his inspirations over a bottle and the other one got his inspirations over a plow.

I will probably do a book report later on MOUNTAIN SINGER after I am finished, but I just wanted to compare the two poets’ lifestyles. They were both highly regarded.

Inspirations can hatch from different types of environments.

One of Us

Last week the car rental people told us the garage next to them would, for a price, look at any car we were considering and tell us if it had any problems.

I picked up a car we were considering and carried it to the garage I mentioned. The owner, a young man, jumped right on it.

I went to the waiting room.

It was about lunch time and three men were eating their lunch. They were mechanics that worked there. At least two others were working. It appeared to be a good size operation.

One of the mechanics asked me what I was reading and he seemed to appreciate a good book.

Then a lady and a toddler came into the waiting room with a fast food sack. She shared what was in the sack with her little boy and one of the mechanics. Apparently, the mechanic and she were married.

The longer I sat there peeking over my book I saw that she also worked there, in the office as bookkeeper and cashier.

The little boy toddler crawled and climbed over everything with the mechanics helping him or guiding his attention to play with things or showing him pictures in the waiting room magazines. One time he looked like one wrong grip and he would topple off a chair onto his head. I held out my arms to serve as a safety net in case he did.

We talked about our wrecked car. They were all car enthusiasts. Which reminds me, on the wall was a poster of a black and white picture taken in the early 50s probably. A car hood was up and around the opened hood along the side fenders and front bumper at least six, maybe seven, people were bent over looking at the engine. You couldn’t see their heads, only their torsos. It was very much like them.

A man came in to pick up his car. The mother/wife/cashier got up and got his ticket and collected his payment. The man announced it was his birthday and he would celebrate it by going hunting for the weekend. He added that the wife wouldn’t like it, but he was going anyway, it was his birthday.

I said, “Ask her when you get back”. He got a kick out of that and all the mechanics jokingly agreed. One of the mechanics said it was easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

The owner came in and told me the status of the car. He is a very positive person. I think his smile is there to stay. He asked one of the mechanics eating his lunch did he make out a ticket for me.

The man put down his sandwich, got a clipboard and said, “I’m sorry, I thought you were one of us.”

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! MAD #14 (parts)

This is 3 portions of MAD #14.

1. An EC Fan Club ad. I think publisher EC Willima Gaines reallyl appreciated the EC fans. They were the ones shoveling money to him, moreso, I think, than the average comicbook buyer. They built an EC fan base. When you belonged to it, you felt you were rubbing elbows with your peers who had the same frame of mind as you. The illustration is by Jack Davis.

2. The letter page. EC printed as much letters form the fans as room permitted, praising or critical.

3. As you can tell the story was lampooning a popular TV program on in those black and white days of a smooth talking suave gentleman who talked sweet nothings into the ear of the camera and had a female following. This story reminded me of the time of WAOK Atlanta radio personallity Piano Red who sung sweet nothings - he may not have been sosphicated suave and his sweet nothings came out in the form of the Blues, but the basic plot was the same I think.

The story was written by editor Harvey Kurtzman and the art was by Jack Davis.

Tradition holds that John moved his family to Atlanta in the 1820's; by 1850 he had sold the land that became the present Little Five Points. He had also been instrumental in starting Utoy Springs Church near Ft. McPherson. John had three sons, to whom he left part of Atlanta. To Bud Pope's grandfather, Henry, was left the area between I-85 and Northside Drive. Henry later sold to the State for the campus of Georgia Tech, along with 4-1/2 acrews that became the site of the Peter's Mansion; this property is now home to the President of the University.
While living in Carroll County, Bud owned a cafe and was a policeman in Villa Rica. Around 1907, the family moved back to Atlanta. Bud became a "train caller"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BONNIE!!!

WHAM!

We were driving south Canton Highway yesterday. We were about in front of the Kyrstal when the car in front of me suddenly stopped. I slammed on my brakes and came to a quick stop just behind him. He stopped because people in front of him stopped.

Whew! I felt like I just avoided a rear end collision.

Then the next moment:

WHAM!!

Anna instantly asked me was I OK. And I asked her the same. Apparently neither of of us are hurt. That is the most important thing.

We were rear-ended by a truck.

The impact of the truck made us hit the car stopped in front of us.

We three drivers got out, looked it over and decided it was best for us to pull over in the parking lot of the shopping center across the street to let the traffic continue to flow. We drove into the parking lot.

We got out again. It was raining. What happened to my cap? My bald head was getting wet. I looked in front seat of the car and it wasn’t there. Then I went to the curb and looked where we were standing at the spot of the wreck and it wasn’t there. I told the man I hit I didn’t know what happened to my cap and he said look in the back seat. I did, and there it was. That is a little experiment with inertia energy.

The man that hit me said he just couldn’t stop in time. He was driving a laundry truck.

I looked at the car that I hit and our front bumper. Neither one had too much damage. Then I looked at our back - it looked like an accordion. And the guy that hit me, his laundry truck didn’t look too bad.

Anna called the police from her cell phone. They were on their way.

The policeman came in a black car. Cobb County Police cars are generally white. Black police cars are members of the Swat Team. I suppose they are black so they will stand alone in recognition, that way they can get trough to the center of trouble quickly. The policeman also had a patch on his shoulder that said “Swat Team”.

After he started interviewing us suddenly he turned around quickly and asked an elderly gent nosing around his black police car could he help him. I think he had keen senses to even realize the guy was there, it must be the Swat in him. The man said could he do something about a car that is parked sideways over two handicapped parking places. He told the man he would get to him in a minute. He was staying focused.

When I told him I was hit from behind and then hit the car in front of me he said, “A ricochet huh?” Up until then I didn’t think of it as a ricochet but he was right. It took a marksman to put in terms I understood.

He took each of our insurance card and our drivers license and retired to his car and wrote it all down and ran it in the computer in the front seat with him. He came back and handed out licenses and insurance papers back to two of us but the guy that hit me he told him to step over to his car with him.

From our point of view it looked like he filled out a form on a pad and pulled a copy off and gave to him. I think he got cited. Or you might say he got "sighted" by a Swat Man.

He said we could go. Our car is not drivable. Well, it drives but the right rear blinker does not work, and well, the car looks like a wreck….. get it? A wreck? Stick with me, I got a million of ‘em!

As soon as we got home Anna got on the phone and talked to our insurance company and adjusters. They were very polite and congenial.

Here we go again.

GOBAGs Drink and Look at Each Other

I was thinking during our meeting last night we were all young once. We were little and we had our our little neighbor friends we played with and we did funny little things. Just like the Little Rascals.

Now we are old with sagging faces but we have our memories!

Our group is a loosely held group that mostly knew each other in our formative years. Now, we know each other in our oxidizing years.

As you can tell by our voices we meet in a helium-filled room; a Helium Den!

A Tribute to Arnold

On TV years ago there was a llittle wimpy character named Arnold. Well, in no way will he be confused with our friend Arnold.

Our friend Arnold has been a little under the weather lately. He will bounce back fully energized any minute now.

BOOK REPORT: THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

This is part book review and part movie review; a combo review.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson is a book of mystery and intrigue.

It is the first of three novels, which I think are all connected – by George, it must be trilogy- or is it? The author, Stieg Larsson died not long after the three books were written. Did he have more in mind to come?

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO takes place in Sweden. Before you start reading you need to turn around, do a mind adjustment, like comedians that imitate do, turn back around and think in a Swedish state of mind.
I must admit that I got totally confused over some of the last names. Some were very similar and some was just hard to remember. I should have jotted down the names as I went.

The present time in the book is in the 2000s, but it is based on a single disappearance of a teenage girl in 1966 (don’t hold me to that year).

After a journalist of a labor or leftist magazine was being successfully sued for libel a retired aging Swedish industrial, who appreciated his investigative work, hired him to find out what happened to his niece or who killed her almost 40 years ago.

The investigation deals with the Nazi Youth Groups and other hate groups. It also deals a lot with sexual abuse, of dominant men that deep down are whack-o’s.

It is also about a very intelligent introverted young little lady who doesn’t take shit off anybody, especially male ego-maniacs By the title of Larsson’s other two books, I think she continues her super mysticism in those as well.

The paperback book is 590 pages. Yesterday I reached 340 pages and read something in it that completely flip-flopped my take on the book. “Did I get one of the Swedish names confused?” I thought to myself. And , “Am I going to have to start over to get it straight who’s who?”

Then, like magic, the answer came before me. Anna was surfing on NETFLIX’s site and came across THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO available to download and watch right then. Which we did.

In the movie everybody jabbered the Sweden language. But luckily, there were subtitles.

The movie, I think, stuck to the main theme and story line, but it did do a gumbo soup with events, as in the sequence of events. I suppose the story line and outcome was not damaged. I know I am not going back to read it to verify it stuck true to the rest of the book.

Would I read it again? I already said above I wouldn't. But, I think I want to take on the next one in sequence, whether it is the book or the movie.

Today in History CSA Genreral Longstreet Died

Today in history CSA General James Longstreet died, January 2, 1904. He was very active Civil War general. Reading briefly over his Civil War battles, he seemed to be present at all the better known or big ones. He had Georgia connections, as in getting his educaiton in Augusta and dying in Gainesville.

His 2nd wife was Helen Dortch Longstreet. They married in 1897, she was 34 and he was 76. In later years she was famous, in her own way. During the Bell Bomber Days in Marietta she was hired for as a riveter on the assembly line.

It appears that Mrs. Longstreet (1862-1963) felt it was more important to socialize than do actual work at the plant. She also had the direct telephone lines of everybody who was anybody, which included the president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. When things didn’t go her way she would simply make a call and suddenly the manager who was demanding work from her would either be transferred someplace else or, I heard, even fired.

Helen Dortch Longstreet, other than her Bell Bomber days, was well known for getting CSA memorials at Civil War sights.

She lived 99 years.

SUNDAY FUNNIES - BELTS N' CELTS!

FRONT LINE COMBAT’S BELTS N’ CELTS, illustrated by John Severin and written by Harvey Kurtzman, is a jolly old war story featuring the British, Irish, and the Scottish soldier and how sometimes they clashed. BELTS N’ CELTS reminds me of STEAK AND SHAKE – they clash too. TALLY HO!

Here We Go Into the New Year!

Enjoy!
