Thar's Gold were in them thar Hills, Aurara, Ga

 

Remember the Gold Rush in Dahlonega, Georgia?  Gold was discovered in the hills of North Georgia in the early 1830s.  Up until then there was a treaty that allowed no white man to go beyond the Chattahoochee River.  However, gold was discovered and gold is gold, so the treaty was dissolved and the Indians were herded to reservations in Oklahoma. 

“Thar’s gold in them thar hills!” was a famous quote then.

However Dahlonega  was not where the gold was.  Dahlonega was the county seat, where the gold business was carried on, like weighing and whatever.  The gold mines were in Aurara, Georgia, about 8 miles away.

Now, Aurara is a ghost town.  We visited it about 10 years ago and took these pictures:
