SUNDAY FUNNIES!! HALLOWEEN

As I mentioned yesterday it is October which is a month that focuses on cemeteries.  And then last week on Sunday Funnies (or was it the week before?) I had a PIRACY story drawn by Graham "Ghastly" Ingels, a man who was famous in the 50s illustrating comic stories that he got tire of it all and retired to Florida and took up portrait painting.

And now we have another story illustrated by Ghastly from the E.C. comic SHOCK named HALLOWEEN!  And what is the climax of October?  Halloween, that's what!

Do you see how clever and calculating I am, arranging others stories and articles to lead up to this?  I am clever aren't I?

Not really, just coincidental.... but I will take credit.

Lucy in the Sky with $1000 Dollar Bills

Or, THE LADY IN BLACK.

It is October.  And October is Cemetery season.  This is a much photographed and talked about plot in the Marietta Citizens' Cemetery.

It is all about the Lady in Black who visited the gravesite every day.   She lived in Atlanta and took a bus or a train to Marietta.   Her name was Lucy Gartrell  (1863-1954). She was mourning her sister Mary Annie Gartrell (1853-1954).  Lucky is buried in an unmarked grave in the plot.

Lucky left no will.  I remember hearing that when authorities went to her home after her death they found money stuffed around all over the place.

Beauty and Beast of 1960 in 2010 at 9;

Beauty and the Beast.  Katherine Durrett and Brad Martin at our Marietta High School Class of 1960 50th Reunion in 2010.  Did I got all those numbers right?  In 1960,  if my grade average was about  .01% less I would not have got to take this picture.  It's all about me.

Throwback Thursday: Georgia Petty and Cecil Grant

Throwback Thursday.   Cecil Grant and Georgianne Petty Grant. c1950.  This is the house we looked for in Chattanooga this past weekend.

I think it would be unusual for a house to remain the same for over 60 years.   I did not recognize any of the houses we saw as their house.

Cecil made a change in the back yard one, look below, I'll get to it near the end.

Georgia is my mother's oldest sibling.  Her living dates are (1906-1666).

Cecil was born in 1901.

Cecil, as far back as I remember was bald headed.  I remember one time when they were visiting  I was about five years old and fascinated with a new top I had.  I was always looking for a smooth surface to spin it on.  I seriously asked Cecil could I spin my top on top of his head.... which caused an uproar of laughter, which was unintended.

Cecil worked for a thread making company in Chattanooga.  He only got one week a year off.  The vacation always coincided with the dates of the Southeastern Fair at the Lakewood Fairgrounds in Atlanta.  Georgia got visit her sisters living in Marietta and Cecil got to go to the Southeastern Fair, alone.

Cecil made a change to their property once.

He had a hobby of collecting 16 mm cowboy moves, starring people like Hoppalong Cassidy, Lash LaRue, Durango Kid, and more.  He built a little house in back of their house.  In the center of the small room was a 16mm projector on a table.  He showed his prize hobby to my father and I.
He also had s string musical instrument, maybe a banjo that he strummed.  I think there was more to Cecil than we will ever know.

On November 4, 1958, his little out-building was leaking when it rained.  He got the tools he needed to repair the leak and climbed on top of the building and nailed tarpaper and/or roofing shingles.  He was using a metal hammer.  The last nail he drove in struck a live electrical wire and  was electrocuted instantly.

Cecil and Georgia are buried in West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Georgia.

Life Guard 's Wit

At the swimming hole this morning the lifeguard asked me were we going out to eat tonight or see a movie, then added that there is "nothing good on TV night."  and topped it with a knowing laugh.
We both laughed.  I didn't want to show I had no idea what he was talking about.
Later, out of his ear range, I asked Anna what he was joking about.  She said tonight is the vice-presidential candidates' debate.
Oh.
I get it!  It will be so boring and uninteresting that you will want to dine out or watch a good movie.

Shouldn't I get some kind of credit here?   Not caring enough to not even knowing when it was scheduled should be worth something!  Right?

James and James

James Caudell.  In high school my mother and James' mother formed some kind of alliance or spy network.  In other words, they compared notes regularly, trying to figure out what we were up to.  Which, in reality not much.

I took the top picture at a Bell Reunion about 2006.  I think I took the bottom picture at a Varners Reunion about 2014.

That is what being sick will do .

3 Sisters Bluegrass, Chattanooga, and Ross Landing

We went for the weekend to Chattanooga to the 3 SISTERS BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL.
We spent most of the time in the tourist and yuppie area of Chattanooga.  I put a post on facebook saying the Chattanooga  Shoeshine stands are gone but there are a good supply of yuppies hanging out at sidewalk cafe's.

Chattanooga has changed a lot since I was a little boy.  I looked for my late aunt's and uncle's house and could not find it.  but I think we were close:
While looking for my aunt's little house we were in a lower income area I went into a grocery store, that looked run down and the first thing heard was a woman telling her crying baby  to "shut the fuck up!"

My grandmother and aunt lived in nearby Rossville. Georgia, on top of a hill, but I had no idea how to look for their house.

click on each picture to enlarge it - you will see more.

See Lookout Mountain between the buildings

Below is Ross Landing where the bluegrass festival was held.  This is the grounds that in 1838-39 the Native Americans, Indians, were rounded up, or herded up, and started their long walk to Oklahoma in the infamous "Trail of Tears".  They were removed from their lands because gold was discovered there and of course the white man could find more uses for gold than the Native Americans so that meant the white man was entitled to it - right?

Here at Ross Landing, owned by a Native American, Chief John Ross who owned Ross's Ferry, was put on water transportation on the Tennessee River for the first segment of their journey where thousands would die.

But now it is place for festivals, boat rides, and other fun things.

The big building in the background had some restaurants with  sidewalk dining.  There we saw a bronze statue of a man.  The name at the base, also in bronze said "Man Statue".  Anna said she thought it was a real man.  I had my doubts when a kid came up and put a dollar in a hat at his feet.  He bent over and gave the little girl a hug.   Later, I saw the statue man take a selfie of himself.  I took out my phone and was ready to take a video of him the next time he moved.  Then he packed up and went home.

Looking out our hotel window at night

The concert started the next day at noon.  See the Tennessee Aquarium in the background.

See the folding chair in front of us with  a small folding shade umbrella.  I never seen one and took this picture.  Then a couple of hours later we noticed a blue chair with a blue shade thing, just like the red one in the exact sport.  Strange.

Up in the day the sun and temperature became hotter.  On the other end they had a series of beer tents.  It looked like a complicated system of first getting in lined to be i.d.ed to prove you were legal age to drink, and then, I think, get in another line to buy drink tickets, then about 4 or 5 tents of different organizations selling beer.
During the hot sun time I wandered up there to see what food trucks were there and out of the crowd came barging a electric motorized wheel chair, elderly, shirtless and huge came barreling towards me.  I stepped out of his way and as he sped by me bumping with the lay of the land, I saw he had two tattoos, one above each nipple, each one looked like the bottom of a shoe.

Interesting, I saw two Chattanooga Police ladies picking up little kids by the heels and giving a free round-and-round ride by centrifugal force.  Good relations!

I thought the bluegrass music was very good and with a wide range of variations.  And it was all free, for two days.

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! EC's PIRACY's SLAVE SHIP

EC Publishing Company's PIRACY did not last too many issues.  Why?  I think Quality.  EC comics were comics of quality and detail.  The public was ready for quality in comics.
I think the art in this story is by Graham Ingels (1915-1991).  Before PIRACY and other EC's tries at taste Graham well known for the ghoulish art in EC's horror line, such as TALES FROM THE CRYPT.  He became known as Ghastly Ingels.
When he left EC he moved to Florida, changed his name so fans could not track him down, and became a non-comic artist.
