Who Do I Think I Am? Wow! part 51

Jim & Lily Henry Petty on vacation

Another son was James “Jim” Petty (1882-1956). Jim and his wife Lilly Henry Petty lived at the foot of the hill of Alice, Nancy, and Wesley’s farm. Jim was also a farmer and I heard he was a good horse trader.

One of his sons, Carlton Petty, was a very active farmer who became one of the biggest landholders in Murray County.

Another son, Cecil lived across the road from Jim. I met him a few times and found him and his wife, Mildred, also blood kin through the Bookout family very friendly.
Another son, Glen, because a heart surgeon in Chattanooga and lived on Lookout Mountain.

There were more children, I just don’t know anything about them.
Speaking of doctors, either Jim or his brother Ervin Petty toes became frostbit. Everybody in the family had to hold him down while their mother’s brother, Doctor Willis Garrett amputated his toes. He had no form of pain killer.

As mentioned above Ervin Petty, moved to Detroit early and lived there most of his life. He had a son, Stanley Petty and a daughter Inez. Once Stanley visited his cousins here in Marietta in the late 70s or early 80s and got in the middle of one of their typical squabbles. When he was leaving someone asked him when was he coming for another visit and he said something like, "I'm not". And he didn't.

Going back to Doctor Glen Petty: About his daughter Gail Petty:
from newspaper article: After graduation from West Point (1982) she had plans to bike for 40 days from Main to Florida with her older brother. Afterwards, she was to report to Fort Benning, Georgia, to attend Jump School for three weeks, then to Fort Sill, Okla, for a field artillery basic course, and then nine months of flight school at Fort Rucker, Ala.

The only son of Daniel and Sarah Jane Petty left to talk about is my grandfather William Elijah Joseph Petty – later.
