My Hunter Genealogy part 1

I am starting with another family genealogy report now. This one will be on what I have recorded of the Hunter family – which is my surname.

There are some strange courses of events throughout the Hunter data and a lot of history. Here we go:

John Hunter’s cabin, built about 1835 in Union County, Georgia. The above picture was a popular postcard for the area.

It has been handed down that John and his sons built the cabin while at the same time defending themselves against Indians. Of course, the Indians may have their side of the story to tell too.

My sons and I have been in this cabin. It is surprisingly how small it was. Notice I said, “Was”? In 2008 a unrelated Hunter family purchased the land and wanted to do way with the cabin. Some of John Hunter descendants had it disassembled and now, the last I heard, the lumber has numbers on the boards and ready to be reassembled, as soon as they find a home for it.

Andrew, via wagon, would haul whiskey to Augusta, Georgia, the closest market, to sell.

In 1836, the Georgia Militia was formed "to protect the citizens from Indians." John and his brother Jason are on the roster rolls that first year in 1836, which extended into the infamous "Trail of Tears". Andrew evidently stayed in the service. Twelve years later he died as a 2nd Lt in Perote, Mexico, from wounds he received in the Mexican War.

Note The Mexican War (1846 1848) was a war between, of course, The United States and Mexico, over mainly border disputes. The bulk of the war was in the Rio Grande area, which was commanded by future President Zachary Taylor. The United States gained Texas, parts of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The treaty was signed 2 February 1848, twenty five days before Andrew M. HUNTER died. Although wounded, if conscious, he lived to see his side win.

Notes for JOHN HUNTER:
Possibly, this John HUNTER lived in Macon County, North Carolina, the same county, as his uncle Jason HUNTER was living at the time, in 1848, but John was not around in 1850 for the Census. From the records: "William J. HUNTER of Union County, Georgia, to John A. HUNTER of Macon County, nephew of said William for natural love & affection, a Negro boy slave, Samuel, 20 years old; also one wagon & yoke of steers.
20 Oct 1848".
However, this John HUNTER would have been about twelve years old in 1848, but he is the only John HUNTER, grandson of John HUNTER, that would near fit. If this was the John HUNTER in question, and he, in 1848 was twelve, quiet possibly, his whole family was living in Macon County, North Carolina.

v. NARCISSA HUNTER, b. Abt. 1844; d. Unknown.
vi. E. G. HUNTER, b. Abt. 1847.

4. REBECCA4 HUNTER (JOHN3, WILLIAM2, SAMUEL1) was born 1812 in , , NC, and died 1898. She married SAMUEL RILEY LANCE, son of JOHN LANCE and SARAH MURRAY. He was born 1814 in Buncombe, , NC, and died 1895.

Notes for REBECCA HUNTER:
Their oldest son was born in North Carolina, about 1834, and the next son was born in Georgia about 1836. From this, we assume that they arrived in Georgia about 1835 or 1836, about the same time that Rebecca's father John HUNTER arrived in Georgia, along with other HUNTER family members. They returned to North Carolina about 1844 (their 6th child was born in NC), but returned to Georgia about 1845 (their 7th child was born in Ga.)

Burial: N.C. Methodist Cem., Hayesville, NC

Notes for SAMUEL RILEY LANCE:
A friend of his (Samuel R. Lance), whoes name has long since been forgotten, was to have a duel with a fellow from Union County, and as fate would have it he became sick, not being able to fill the appointed date. Dueling custom has it that if you are sick you have the right to name a replacement, so Samuel Lance, being noted as a fighting man, was chosen to fight in his stead. He came to Union County by request, to uphold the honor of a friend, fought the duel and won, leaving his adversary, against whom he had no malice, lying motionless up the ground.
He came to Union County in the Spring of 1839. He returned to Buncombe County and told his brothers and moved his family one year later.
- From BLOOD MOUNTAIN COVENANT, A SON'S REVENGE pp7-8, by Charles E. Hill
August of 1870 - Sam Riley Lance; his sons James Debarris, Andrew, and John; and his son-in-law John Frady did call on Joseph Henson, and as the indictment in court did say, "Fight, whoop, holler, and curse, and attempt to go into the house of said in a violent and tumultuous manner" because of what he said about one of the members of the family.

Notes for WILLIAM JOHNSON HUNTER:
. In his whiskey distilling business, he was paid in gold and had accumulated quiet a bit by the time of the Civil War. He was fearful that some renegades or outlaws (like Coot Ray's Gang) might come by and rob him so he made a poke sack of heavy duck cloth which was larger than a gallon bucket; filled it with his gold; brought it from his house to the Nottley River just east of the Daniel England's house and threw it across the River for Daniel to keep for the duration of the War. He felt his brother-in-law Daniel, was the only one he could trust.
