Original Bill to Spring Term 1850
To the Honorable Jude of the Court Circuit of Equity for the County of McDowell and State of North Carolina.
The Bill of Complaint of Elijah Petty of said county against Samuel Flemming and William F. McKesson the former of McDowell County and the latter of Burke County of said state.
Your Orator humbly complain Sheweth unto your Honor, that on or about the First Day of May A.D., 1846, one James A. Wilson, who resided in said county of McDowell, owned and possessed in his own right a negro boy named Andrew.

With about 7 or 8 pages of confusing legal jargon Samuel Flemming and William McKesson are accused of illegally gaining ownership of Andrew.

The sickening part is that Andrew does not own himself. He is merely a piece of property for a judge to decide who he belongs to. By all the complex sentences and double negatives and double positives I never could figure out who gain ownership of Andrew… but I bet it wasn’t Andrew. It was a sad time in U.S. History.
