On this date in history:

1813 Battle of Beaver Dam-British & Indian forces defeat US forces.

1861 Tennessee becomes 11th (& last) state to secede from US.

1947 Flying saucers sighted over Mount Rainier by pilot Ken Arnold.

1948 Soviet Union begins Berlin Blockade, so Berlin Airlift begins.

1949 "Hopalong Cassidy" becomes 1st network western (NBC). You could have fooled me. Until I read this I would have bet the 1st western on TV was The Long Ranger.

1987 Jackie Gleason actor (Honeymooners), died at 71 in Fort Lauderdale. I heard the inscription on his tombstone is: AND AWAY WE GO!
