Notes for ANDREW JACKSON TYSON:
Barbara Buchanan rogers, descendant provided the following biographical sketch:
"I found out this Spring (2002) that everyone thinks he died as a young man because of the headstone in Tyson-Wheless Cemetery, but he is actually buried in the Surrette Cemetery, Arksabutla, Tate County, Mississippi. It is our understanding that as a young teenager, Andrew Jackson Tyson joined the Confederate Army. He was told that he was fighting for the wrong side and that if he did, he could plan on not returning home (to Anson County, North Carolina). He was a bugler. After his discharge, Andrew Jackson went down to Rome, Georgia to school and became a teacher. He traveled on to Tate County, Mississippi, where he settled, taught, married and raised a family. After the death of his first wife (Sarah Elizabeth Cooper), Andrew Jackson married Martha Porter Brown who lived in Love, Mississippi. My mother did not know anything about the Tyson family, beyond the names and birth dates of A.J.'s parents and siblings until this spring when I accessed ancestry.com.
Andrew Jackson Tyson did fight for the Confederacy. I have copies of his muster roll, receipt for clothing, and also a letter used as an affidavit for his widow. He enlisted in Fayetteville (North Carolina) on March 24, 1862, and served until the end of the war. He was a member of Company E, 2nd Regiment. At the end of the war he was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, Local Defense, Fayetteville. He would have been very young when he joined up, probably only 14, but it is said that he began as the company bugler.... His second marriage was late in life... At the time of his death, A.J. was 62, and had been married to Mattie Porter Brown for only 12-13 years.
