By 1850, Josiah had moved to Carroll County, Ga., (near Villa Rica) because the land was plentiful and cheap.
Josiah and his wife Mahale are listed in the "History of Villa Rica" among sixty-seven other families as the original settlers of the area.
He was a justice of the peace in the 1850s.
By 1860 four other brothers - Clement, Alexander, Jehu, and Dixon's family - had joined him. (Dixon died in 1847).
Grantee/grantor records for Campbell (later Carroll) County indicate that Josiah sold some of his land to Washington Hembree on 11/8/1860. Two of Washington Hembree's granddaughters later married Josiah's nephew Joseph T. Tyson, who fathered 29 children.
At age almost 50, May 1864, Josiah enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company F 1 (Fannin's) Georgia Reserves.
Until 1968 a church stood beside Summers Cemetery (where they are buried); this was the church originally built by Josiah as the Tyson school. Daughter Mary Ann taught "country school" there for many years.
