My Tyson Genealogy - Part 2

Much of the Tyson information that I have compiled is from the hard work of Jerry Barton Tyson, who supplied us for years with a quarterly report. Jerry died last year.

The Tyson family, as I know it, started out fairly small, but continues to mushroom:

Generation No. 2

2. MATHIAS3 TYSON (JOHN2, UNKNOWN1)2 was born 1660 in , Accomack Co, Va, and died Mar 1709/10 in , Bath (now Hyde), NC.

Notes for MATHIAS TYSON:
John and wife Susannika Tyson along with son Mathias Tyson purchased land in Accomack County Va. Mathias and Mary Tyson had John, Moses Cornelius, Edmund, Susanne, Thomas & Samuel...Thomas married Sabra Mason. . Matthias Tyson was living in Accomack Co on the Ghotes site.
In 1693 Mathias and his wife Mary bought 300 acres of land on Messange Creek in Accp, acl County in exchange for 7000 pounds of tobacco. In 1702, he sold this land for 4000 pounds of tobacco and, along with his mother and step-father, moved to North Carolina.
The oldest land grants for Wickham, in the Bath area of North Carolina (on the coast near Pamlico Sound) were issued in 1706 to several familes, including the Williams, Spiers, Moyes, and "Tisens".- Elesa Hembree
They made their home on Slade's Creek off the Pungo River (Hyde-Bath Co, NC). The old homestead was on the north side of Tysons Creek and Little Contentnea Creek, ten miles west of Greenville.
North Carolina contained a large Tuscarora Indian population and there were on-going conflicts between them and the settlers. In 1710, one of the sons of Mathias and Mary (probably Henry) was killed by the Indians. - Elesa Hembree
Mathias was killed in Tuscarora Indian War.

Cornelius, Edmond, Thomas, and John Hardee, husband of Susanna received large land grants in the area that was to become Pitt County, North Carolina.

Cornelius's sons Cornelius, Edmond, and Thomas Tyson and his son-in-law John Hardee, (Susannah's husband) received large land grants in the area which was later (1760) to become Pitt County. Here they prospered and multiplied so that by 1762, the date of the oldest Pitt County Tax List, 12 of the 492 households were headed by descendants of Mathias Tyson. Assuming an equal number of Tyson-born wives in other households, one can estimate that even then five per cent of the country residents were descendants of Mathias Tyson.
-Bruce C. Tyson, Jr. in HERITAGE OF PITT COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA.

Mathias TYSON/TICE was in the Colonial Militia of Virginia. Sources: "List of Colonial Soldiers of Virginia" by H.J. Eckonrode. The book shows he was listed in "Henings Statues at Large" - "Ty" Tyson.

Anonymous,

No, our relationship was our relationship. We both are/were Tyson descendants. I think his widow donated all Jerry's stuff to a library, Fort Worth Library I think. I think I could probably give you a contact of somebody who knows more about his papers, but I not to someone named Anonymous.
