MAD Comicbook #11 did a lampoon on FLASH GORDON in May 1963. It was illustrated by Wally Wood and the story was written by Harvey Kurtzman.
What was not told that from November 1951 until April 1953 Kurtzman collaborated with Dan Barry putting out a daily comic strip in the newspapers called FLASH GORDON. When he satirized the space hero in MAD he knew his subject well, and I am pretty sure some of the things he poked fun of in MAD he created in the daily comic strip. I guess that is OK, just so he didn't try to sue himself.
