On This Date in History, May 8:

1794 - The  US Post Office was established. 

I think I read Benjamin Franklin was the first Post Master General..  If so, he was the first to practise Nepotism (his son was a high official of the Post Office) and the practice has been running rampart since.  I saw, I know.


Also, that same son sided with the Brits - not that it has anything to do with the birth of the Post Office or anything.  I probably have just enough knowledge on this to be dangerous.
