Documented UFOs, part 3 of 3

This finalizes the non-fiction (probably some will disagree) UFO report that EC's WEIRD SCIENCE-FANTASY published. If you missed the first two, go back to the past 2 days. If you have already read the first two sections, and after you read this section congratuations! You just read a whole comic book from end to end.

Statistics again - What's In a Number?

The average American wedding is attended by 189 guests.*
189 guests? I don’t even have that many Facebook friends and probably 10 to 20% of those I have never met face to face.

Strand Theater Reminants of the Past

This door is a side door to the Strand Theater. Back in the 40s, 50s, and part of the 60s in was the "Colored Entrance". Thw white folks got the grand entrance with a bright marquee and a plush lobby with a grand staircase. The Afro-Americans had to come in the side door and walk up to back of the balcony. The Strand was the only walk-in theater that allowed blacks. What is "Separate but Equal Treatment" about that?

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! UFOs For Real!

Actually, the is part II of the UFO post from the previous day. If all goes right, part 3, or the finalization will be Monday.

Who Do I Think I am? Wow! part 95

BEN KASH6 RIDLEY was born 17 May 1911 in Fabius, Jackson, Al, and died 18 Apr 1945 in le Shima, , , Japan. He married GEORGIA IOLA PARRIS48 13 May 1932 in Trion, Chattooga, Ga, daughter of MONROE PARRIS and ARTIE CARVER. She was born 25 Jan 1914 in Albertville, Marshall Co, Al.

Notes for BEN KASH RIDLEY:
Due to the economical condition during the late 1920's and early 1930's, the hardships of farming and poor health of his father, Ben had to leave school and find work. He went to Trion, Ga., where his sister Lillie and her husband Marvin Jones were living. Ben got a job with Trion Cotton Mills and boarded with Marvin's mother, Mrs. Fallas.
While attending a social in the 'Frogtown' community of Trion, Ben met Iola Parris, who held the title of "Miss Trion" at the time.
He and Iola raised their family in Trion. When their family got larger they built a larger house and Iola's aunt Allie (Carver) CHANDLER came to live with them and kept the children while Iola and Ben worked.
On April 10, 1942, Ben was inducted into the United States Army at Fort McPherson, Georiga. He was in Company "G", 306th Infantry, Seventy-seventh Division, under the command of Captain Buckner M. CREEL, III.
At the time of his death, Ben was a first scout in the third platoon of Company "G" of 306 Infantry. During the night on the Island of Ie Shima, Ryukyus in the Pacidic Ben was wounded by enemy mortal shell while in the battle with the Japanese (well known war correspondent Ernie Pyle, died in the same battle). His body was exhumed on March 15 1949 and sent back to the U.S and buried in the National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.

In 1943, Iola and her father bought a farm with two houses in Douglas County, Ga., just outside of the Austell city limits.
In 1944, Iola bought a new house on Arlington Circle, Grove Park Community, in Atlanta, Georgia. She rented out her house on the farm. Since Iola did not drive at that time she would be on a trolley line. She and the children were living on Arlington Circle when Ben's death happened in the war (1945).

Spaced Out

Yesterday was the take off of the Atlantis from Cape Canaveral, it is the final mission of a 30 year space program. Why? Did we see everything there is to see in Outer Space? No, we just don’t have the money. Russia will do our satellite service for us and I suppose Russian and China will keep on soaring in outer space that none of know anything about yet.

Yesterday, also, was the 64th anniversary of the Roswell, New Mexico, UFO sighting, so some people believe. I don’t know. But I bet there are some advance civilizations up there in that infinity of space, I betcha!

As sort of a review of flying saucers sightings report below is EC Comic’s WEIRD SCIENCE-FANTASY, special issue (#26) FLYING SAUCER REPORT, 1954, and reprinted by Russ Cochran Publlishing Company, which is presented as factual.

This is just a portion of the comic which devoted its whole issue to UFO’s. Hopefully, tomorrow will be more as the SUNDAY FUNNIES.

OM Rex Knight

This video was taken September 2010 at the Bell Reunion.

Rex mentions Sautee Valley near Helen, in north Georgia.
Sautee is the community my distant relative Leander Newton Trammell and his wife and kids lived for a while. Leander Trammell also had the Trammell House in Marietta built. It is also where my distant relative-in-law Moses Harshaw lived, who at the time was considered the meanest man in Georgia (because the way he treated his slaves).

Also in the Sautee area is a closed covered bridge. It was a backdrop in the movie “I’LL CLIMB THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN.”

No Hanging Today Folks

The law of the land says that one is innocent until proven guilty. And also there is something that says the prosecutor must prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the accused, or defendant, is guilty of the crime charged.

You may feel you know Casey Anthony killed her daughter but the prosecutor did not have enough hard evidence to prove beyond a shadow of doubt.

The “Beyond a Shadow of Doubt” thing was designed to protect the innocent. You don’t want innocent defendants wrongly convicted and suffer the punishment doled out.

And the lawyer’s job is to defend his client as well as he can. That is what he was sworn to do. So, you can’t blame him when he uses the “Beyond a shadow of doubt” card – which is almost a sure win-win situation – a good lawyer can apply the right pressure to brain in the right way and walla! Shadow of doubt! This case must have been a cake walk, with a habitual liar with a dysfunctional family.

No Lynching Today.

Turner Chapel long ago

This was Turner Chapel. If my memory is correct it was on the corner of Lawrence and Waddell Streets. It was a predominately Black church. In my formative years I used to walk across the street from it, frankly, I was more curious of the pool hall on that I could see through the opened door.

Turner Chapel has been bulldozed away years ago to be replaced by local government complexes. Turner's congregation still lives in a much bigger church at Fairground and the Marietta Parkway, North.

GOBAG - The Day After the Birthday Party

At the GOBAG meeting at the American Legion yesterday I walked up to the bar to order a beer the lady behind the bar told me there was food spread left over from the day before over on the table. The food was left over from the 4th of July celebration. She said if I needed anything microwave just give it to her.

Among the food was a patriotic-colors birthday cake about half gone. A lot of people evidently don’t like icing. Hunks of icing were left. Well, it just so happens that I love icing, so everything worked out!

Also, this is a test video. I did not use my Flip camera this time. I used a camera that I think is for regular pictures but has video as an option. Another option it has is a shake or jiggle prevention, which at my age, I need. It appears that it is not as light sensitive as the Flip. I think I’ll test it some more, but in between tests flip flop back to my Flip.

4th of July Party in Marietta

We went to a party on the 4th. About 5pm as we arrived it rained like the Mother of all rains. By the time most of the people arrived, it quit raining and cleared off some. People could stand around and socialize. People got to mix and mingle, hand out cards*, share recipes, gossip, tell the latest rumors buzzing around the city….. if this an’t Southern Living I don’t know what is. There were film editors, columnists, elected officials, lawyers, and at least two retired people mingling. Yes, there was at least one amateur blogger/video camera operator.

Speaking of the video camera operator, the idiot overlooked videoing the low country boil spread out on the table, along with grilled burgers and dogs, salads of all kinds and numerous desserts.

Then the band started to pack their gear as a rumble up in the heavens said another storm would be here soon.

It was a very pleasant evening. Doug and Rachel really know how to throw a party. We enjoyed their hospitality immensely.

Then it started to rain again. We folded our chairs and headed for home.

*I may have been the only one that was handing out cards.

Old Mariettia (OM) No Longer Among Us

This is the late Eddie Sullivan taken at the Bell Reunion in September 2006. Eddie and I were kids who played together in the Clay Homes. Eddie was a few years older so we ran in different crowds. However, Eddie and I (also named Eddie) shared the same birth month. For a few years Eddie’s family and my family would have a birthday picnic every year.

The only Hunter-Sullivan Birthday picnic I remember was at Sweet Water Creek near Austell and Powder Springs. There was a bridge and to the right was a dirt road going down the slope of a red-mud bank into the water. On the other side of the creek the road left the water and went back up the slope. I suppose at one time there was a bridge that had to be replaced, which was overlooking us. We used the dirt road as a beach. I was playing in knee deep or maybe waist deep water to me when suddenly I stepped into nothing. It must have been the edge of the creek at one time.

Swoosh! I went under water and a current grabbed me and down I went. I was only about 4 or 5 years old. Daddy and Eddie’s brother Dickie jumped in and rescued me.

The Sullivan family did the concessions at Larry Bell Park.

Eddie died near the end of June in 2008

Actual Lunch Talk at an Upscale Restaurant

From another room: “Ohhh NO!”
Me: “OH NO?! That is not good to hear from the kitchen!”
Anna: “That was from the lobby.”
Me: “Oh.”

Marie: “How was your beef?”
Me: “Pretty good until I realized the tender pieces were portabella mushrooms”.

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! ENEMY CONTACT

ENEMY CONTACT was pulled out of EC Comic's TWO-FISHED TALES #22, originally published 1951. The story was by editor Harvey Kurtzman and the art was by Jack Davis. Very few artists can come close to Jack Davis when showing men in action. And Harvey Kurtzman was a pacesetter in war and satirical comics.

Casper McCracken?

This picture was taken a few years ago. It is the first block of Atlanta Street in downtown Marietta.

See the gap between the two buildings? There is a stairway leading up to the office on the 2nd level. When I was a teenager James Wilder's radio station WBIE was there.

Billy Joe Royal and Mickey Carlile had a live broadcast playing rock and roll in the earl evening, maybe at 5:00 or 5:30, one or two days a week. A few times I went with them to help out, or be the "go-far", but ended up doing pranks instead.

Now, the first floor is an extention of Johnny McCracken's Irish Bar next door. Years before my time the building was a fire station.

The building is said to be haunted. OOooooooooo...

a Burping Smoked Meat Thursday

Yesterday in the Marietta Daily Journal was an article about Big Shanty Smokehouse in Kennesaw. We went there a few years ago, right after they opened in 2008 but just about forgot the taste – we went back. The sampler platter in the article looked so good! That is what I ordered. It was piled with smoked ribs, a few slabs of briskets, and some pulled pork. I thought it was very good - and stuffing. It all had the rare smoked meat taste. Big Shanty Smokehouse is on Cherokee Street in Kennesaw in what used to be a small dwelling (compared to today’s dwellings).

Later we were in a store and I burped what tasted like smoked meat. I think if I practiced I could have blown smoke rings.

That evening on GPBTV channel 8 there was a special on Margaret Mitchell. It was very well done, telling a lot about Margaret Mitchell I didn’t know. Parts of it was filmed in Marietta. One of the places was the Trammell House, owned by Rachel Frey and her husband Doug.* Rachel portrayed Margaret in several scenes when she was writing or typing. It was a good show! I believe it will be on again tonight and several repeating times on GPTV.

*We are currently reading the book MARIETTA THE GEM CITY OF GEORGIA by Doug Frey which is about the grand old houses of Marietta and the history of the owners.
