Gotcha Goscha*!

This is my late friend Eddie Goscha/ Meek. He lived the first part of his life with his stepfather’s surname Goscha and after he became an adult he changed it to his late real father’s surname Meek.

The picture was taken in 1991 at Midway Methodist Church between Alpharetta and Cummings at Anna’s grandmother Irene Foster’s funeral. Eddie was related to some of Irene Foster’s descendants who was also his Meek kin. He was paying his respects.

Eddie made it plain that when he died he said he did not want any kind of service at all or even an obituary. I respect his wishes but also respect his paying his respects to Mrs. Irene Foster.

I used to partially run around with Eddie and his cousin Jimmy Pat Presley in grammar and high schoodl. Eddie and Jimmy Pat lived on Phillips Drive. Eddie did not have the cruel streak in him like Jimmy Pat did. But Eddie and Jimmy Pat both had an excellent sense of humor. They are both dead now.
The last time I saw Eddie was in 2000. I had gone to the Central Library in downtown Marietta on my lunch break from the Census. Eddie was walking out. He told me came up to the library everyday to go on line to check his stocks. He was as jovial as he was as a kid.

*The above title has more of a splash effect than Gotcha Meek!

Sorry Eddie, I couldn’t help myself.

Dixie Darling Regina Rambo Benson

Thursday we went to the Marietta History Museum for a mighty fine lecture presented by Christa.

The lecture was about Regina Rambo Benson. I knew Regina was known for being the first female automobile owner/driver in Marietta and that she was in some sort cross-country drive in the early 1900s and was the only lady participant and she organized a party on the street car that ran between Marietta and Atlanta on its last run. But with such sparks I knew there had to be more.

Christa named her lecture REGINA RAMBO BENSON, QUEEN OF ALL DIXIE. Christa said if Regina was there, she would probably object to the title, because, according to one of her quotes, “Nothing should come before Dixie”. She was not a Dixie native. She loved her adopted state-of-mind.

I learned some things I didn’t know about the lady pace setter and reaffirmed some things I did know. For instance, Regina was not born in Cobb County as I thought, but in Rio de Janeiro. Another bit of news to me is that she just about led the parade to the Confederate Cemetery every year on Confederate Memorial Day. Once she was chosen as some kind of Harvest Queen of the Year and when she accepted her award ten thousand people gave her an ovation.

She knew her car inside and out and had to stop alongside the road and make repairs from time to time as the picture above shows. Christa said only time, as far as she knows, did Virginia ask help from a man. She was stuck in mud and asked for a push.

Another time she ran for congress. She needed $1200 for a Democrat registration fee, so instead of paying it she ran as an Independent Democrat. She lost. However, she got over 900 votes. It was prohibition time in the United States. Her platform was to appeal the prohibition laws, or at least let the people vote on it. Her reason for running wasn’t that she was a drinker but that she loved to visit saloons to sing and dance. No drinking means no singing or dancing. She did not win but she did have the high registration fee reduced to just over a hundred dollars so it was more available for the common man (or woman) to run.

Probably 6 or 8 descendants of Regina were there. They have scattered. One lives in Woodstock; one in the northeast area, near Cleveland and Helen, and another one raises horses near Rome. Her grandma also liked to ride horses I learned.

I could check my wife’s notes and tell more, but then you get the benefit of the lecture without going. More people need to go to the Marietta History Museum to give them support.

A Horse is a Horse, of Course

While googling Catherine the Great for a good picture I came across this the above, which is probably best represents her reputation.

On My and Willow’s walk this morning on my ipod I listened to a download from NPR about Catherine the Great of Russia and her lovers. And boy, did she have them! The last one, was about almost 40 years her junior.

Apparently, she preferred carnal knowledge with very and powerful intelligent men – except, just maybe the last one. That is because possibly the last one was a male horse.

It may be folklore/urban legend and it may it may not be. But the story that generated was she had a horse hoisted up and lowered down. The support mechanism broke and the horse fell on Catherine. Officially she died of a stroke – which may be true. Or not.

I can see how the elite of governing Russia, who ruled their serf class with an iron hand, would not want it on record that the leader of the leaders died while having sexual intercourse with a horse. It could be “revolting”.

The 1958 OLYMPIAN - the last two pages

And now we have reached the end of the 1958 OLYMPIAN and close it up and start rubbing our hands greedily, to get right on the 1959 OLYMPIAN.

But wait! No so fast. Let me go to the bathroom first. You know, take a break? In fact, I am going to take a 3 or 4 days break. I will probably be churning out the 1959 OLYMPIAN Monday.

But return anyway before then. I'll have other stuff hopefully.

GOBAG Catfish Fry

Monty cooked a batch of delicious filet catfish and also delicious hushpuppies. The hushpuppies were made from a recipe he has been perfecting.

By the way, did you know how hushpuppies got their name? Once a group of hunters were spending the night at their hunting camp. The assigned cook was trying to fry biscuits. The hunting dogs were wailing and barking, probably smelling the cooking aroma. To get them to shut up the cook tossed them some fried biscuits and said, "Hush Puppies!"

I mentioned the catfish were filet. I didn't say how they were filet. Monty, when fishing for them, when he got one on his line he just jerked so hard on the pole it jerked the fish skeleton out of the body.

One of the above is a fish story.

Bell Reunion September the 25th!!

A reminder.

The Bell Reunion day will be the time to tell that high school bully what you really thought of him when you smilingly handed over your lunch money every day.

Bring your own chair if possible. Chewing the fat will probably start about noon, but eating will be at 2:00.

Fresh-Up Freddie

This morning the Marietta Daily Journal had an article about an old friend. His name is Freddie Williams. He was the carhop at Varner's Drive-In during my "becoming of age" years. The story is about Freddie hanging up his hat and retiring. Freddie held down two jobs for many years: Lockheed and as a carhop, first at Varner's then at the now closed Varsity, Jr. in Atlanta.

Bidding On Birdhouses

The above picture was not one of the birdhouses on the auction block, but some of the birdhouses looked something like it, to give you an idea.
Saturday evening we went to a women’s club White Elephant Auction and dinner. Although I must admit I did not hear it called a “White Elephant Auction,” but have heard it called that elsewhere.

The idea is these women bring in stuff of value that they don’t need or want, hidden in bags, boxes or wrapping. You bid on the object sight unseen. Sometimes you make out on your bidding and sometimes you take a beating. The money goes to a needy charity in Cobb County.

Keep in mind, most members are elderly, frugal women who are not computer or electronic savvy. Not that I am all that computer savvy, but if something has a menu and is halfway user friendly, I can eventually find my way around.
The event was to start at 6:00 pm at a Methodist church with the plan being to come early and help set up the tables, chairs, and arrange your food, so we could eat by 6:00. We are perpetual early extremists but lately have been trying to hold ourselves back, arriving a little later than we normally do. We arrived at the 5:15. The parking lot was empty. We waited and waited. They asked people to try to be there by 5:00 to help set up. On the way over I was fretting to myself, worrying that we would not get a decent parking place.

At least we got to pick any parking place we wanted.

We sat in the car until 5:30 and no one showed up. They changed the meeting day. Maybe they changed the meeting place too and the telephone chain service failed someplace along the line. Anna picked up her cell-phone and was in the process of calling a friend to see if she knew if the meeting place had been changed when a car drove up.

A lady and a man got out. She was a club member. She said they arrived at 5:00, no one was there. She said they then left, drove around and got lost. She introduced the man as her boyfriend.

“Boyfriend?” The short old man, looked to be age-wise qualified to be a great grandfather at least. That means she was his “girlfriend”.

Not long after that somebody arrived with the key to get inside. She put the key inside the keyhole, turned, opened the door and the alarm went off.

We had no idea how to turn it off.

Other people arrived carrying their food and ignoring the screaming alarm. The lady kept telling people not to move or open doors. She thought that was what was causing the alarm to pitch a fit. She called somebody in the know and they told her to punch in the secred number on the security keypad to make the alarm quit. She did and the alarm continued. After a while she finally called back and found out she had the wrong number. This time it worked.

The boyfriend and I sat up tables and unfolded chairs and arranged them so-so. Another team were putting on red plastic table cloths. Women were at work arranging their covered dishes in buffet style and arranging the things to be auctioned off.

Everything sort of osmosis itself into completion just a few minutes after the 0 hour of 6pm. Amazing how unorganized it appeared then everything fell into place in an organized manner.

Of all the women there I counted 5 men. I noticed by this auction and the other auctions that us men are for good setting up tables and chairs, putting back the table and chairs where we found them, and carrying stuff to and from the cars.

I noticed something else we were good for too. That is to keep an eye on the food table. One man was not bashful, he was the first to start piling food his plate. And none of us men was bashful about going back for seconds.

The auction went nicely. I think plenty of money was raised for some needy charity. It was also entertaining to watch people unwrap what they blindly bided for and what objects the objects they blindly bided on were.

The lady auctioneer looked in one package and said something like, “This object is meant for a man.” No one but men bided on it. Not me, I didn’t bid on anything. A man got it. Opened the package and it was a cranium mind-games. A few of the women took in their breath at that – men are the only ones that are smart enough to play mind-games? They sarcastically said. Oops!

Birdhouses were the show stealers. A lady brought in probably between 8 and 12 boxes neatly packed and some were wrapped in a certain type of paper. The birdhouses themselves were pastel colors and trimmed in a darker colors. They reminded me of gingerbread houses. The lady that brought them in placed them strategically, like every 3rd or 4th package, either she cleverly planned it that way, or it just worked out like that.

After about the 4th or 5th birdhouse people begin to realize that the certain type of wrapping paper or box meant a birdhouse was inside. Then, after that, each time one of her packages was introduced a bidding frenzy began.

However, remember, these mostly are frugal elderly ladies. They quickly shouted out their bid, but I don’t think anybody paid over $4.50 or $5.00 for a birdhouse.

Somebody said there was a ten dollar bidding limit. But they made one exception: Two hundred dollar tickets to the Cobb Symphony concert of your choice for the Christmas season. They went for $40.

The story behind the birdhouses – how come the lady had so many and willing to get of them: Her daughter had them sitting on top of her cabinets in the kitchen. She was tired of them and was going to throw them away.

After the auction ended we put up the chairs and tables but not much food was left to carry back. We men saw to that. Then Mother Nature unleashed a hell of a storm of with raining forcefully coming down, thunder, and lightening. Luckily, we made it home, even it at times we had to drive only 20 mph.

SUNDAY FUNNIES - Double Feature of QUIPS!

These quips are from MAD #13. Editor Harvey Kurtzman always claimed with MAD he was one artist short. First we will do the letter page, then on to the quips, which are photos, to make up for that one artist short claim.

I don't know of any one who can predict the future, certainly not Harvey Kurtzman. You can look at his career time-line and see he had no idea about his future. But, with that said, with the above, he was the only writer of MAD at that time, he gave us a hint of his future: HELP magazine which he would be editing in the future used plenty of quipt style pages. They were cheap!

Also note that the HELP quips are bolder and maybe even controversial. The MAD ones were, well, comicbook limited.

Fuzzy St. John and Lash LaRue

On this date in history, September 10, 1893, Al “Fuzzy” St. John was born in Santa Ana, California.

Fuzzy had a lot of fans in Marietta, especially among the young Saturday morning Strand Theater movie going crowd. On the big silver screen he kept us laughing and howling. He was a regular Charlie Chaplin; an excellent body-language mime, except Fuzzy talked and fussed a lot.

One time Fuzzy came through Marietta. Exactly why, I do not know. I know. It may have had something to do with another well-known cowboy, Lash LaRue, Fuzzy’s sidekick, who also had a stay in Marietta about the same time. When Lash was in town he was down and out. It was about the same time period.

At the time, my father was chief of the Cobb County Police. One evening he met Mr. St. John.

Fuzzy died in 1963, which were not too many years after his Marietta visit. He lived about 70 years.

My Petty Relatives

These are some of my distant relatives that lived in Fannin County, Georgia, in the early 1900s.

Just judging from the body languare I would expect the boy, Jim Petty, to have one ear swollen from being pinched and Mrs. John Petty to have a muscular thumb and finger.

All GOBAGs Either Present or UnAccounted For

This video is a little different than most of the videos on Chicken-Fat.com because I am in it. Usually I am on the other side of the camera, but this time one Paul Roper commandeered the camera for a cllip.

Our GOBAG meeting was nice. They are always nice. There was nothing big going on. I think each of us and/or have our ailments and complaints but keep our bitching to a minimum. We joined two round tables together at the American Legion and talked about our Navy years, other friends not there, restaurants, and a few adventures or mis-adventures.

I got one historical fact straight during our meeting. Back at the Cobb County Fair in about 1958 or 59 a group of Marietta High boys went into a hoochee-choochee show at the carnval part of the fair. The girl did not strip all the way, almost. I heard Arnold G. demanded that the girl strip completely or they, he and his freinds, would topple the tent poles and bring it down. For over 50 years I have thought it was Arnold. Why not, he was big and bold. He Arnold was sitting next to me, so I asked him was. He said, "No, it was Lawton." Lawton was also big, ballsy, bold, and brash. That made more sense. Now, that historical fact has been settled.

That also spurred somebody else to remember a stripper another time at the carnival where a girl, stipped naked, lit a cigar, dropped it, and squatted down and picked it by her "gripper". He even remembered her name. He said then she put it in her mouth and smoked it! As if that was the punch line. I said I heard that she also, when she was holding it by her "gripper" she made it puff smoke! That was a God-given talent.

In earlier times we might have been sitting around a pork barrel at a general store. It is a pleasure to see them every week. We have a revolving door of about 30 to 40 that come or don't come every week. Our little band of light drinkers are a holdover from our teenage years. We cling to our memories by clinging to our old friends. It is sort of like a Beer Fountain of Youth served with Cheetoes.
