U..S. Average Coffee Drinker

According to UNCLE JOHN’S BATHROOM READER the average American drinks 3.4 cups of coffee a day.  That is about what I drink.  It is a nice feeling to fall in the average brackets from time to time.  It means I don’t always have my own drummer.  It means I’m one of them!  I swallow with emotional pride when I use the word “US”!

Let the Brits have their Tea, we have Coffee!

I think I’m going to cry.

Oscar and Arthur Hunter, twins

This is an interesting email I received a year ago via Ancestry.com. Indeed we are related. This person's grandfather and our grandfather Frank Paris Hunter are brothers. I replied and told him/her so. Australia?

The picture. Arthur Hunter is on the right and his twin brother Oscar is on the left.

The email:
Hello, my Grandfather, William Arthur Hunter, was a farmer, originally from the Woodstock Georgia area, later moving to Central Florida. I have lived in Australia for the past 25 years but still return to the States on a regular basis. Any possible connections here? Sincerely, Leslie Todd

Happy Chinese New Year!

Throwback Thursday.

Chinese say this is the year of the Pig

Recently when I heard it was the Chinese New Year it reminded me of a few years ago when we saw an ad in a publication for a Chinese Restaurant, “Come and celebrate Chinese New Years with us!”  Illustrated were balloons floating, streamers shootings, music note symbols, and fire crackers saying boom!  More importantly it said buy one meal and get the second of equal or lesser value free.

We decided we would join the fun and go to their New Years Party.  I imagined everybody there lined up with each with the hands on the hips of the person in front of them, and covered with a long dragon cover and us dancing all around the restaurant like a long train with us all giggling, popping campaign corks, and every body singing off key – man!  It was going to be a ball!

Especially that two dinners for the price of one part.

The night of the Chinese  New Year we went to the restaurant.  Which was on the corner of Highway 92 and Bells Ferry Road.  When I realized where it was I was going to tell them my Hunter, Tyson, and Huey ancestors lived on three of the corners and Anna’s Kuykendall ancestor lived on the 4th corner.  They would oooh and ahh over that I bet.

Surprisingly, we were the only customers.  With the coupon we got two meals for the price of one.

A little naked boy toddler kept peeking at us behind a partly opened kitchen door..

Not even a firecracker.  Another disappointment.

If we had waited a couple of weeks we would not be disappointed because of dullness.  About two weeks after we were there, in the restaurant, a dope deal went bad and there was a shoot-out.    One person was killed and two were wounded.

Al Capone the Progressive Humanitarian

When most people hear the name Al Capone they think of a ruthless criminal.  What they don’t of is Al Capone the humanitarian.  In Chicago he organized bread and soup lines for the starving.

He could have done much more if the Federal government was not investigating him all the time.

Food and Socials on SUPER BOWL Day

HAPPY SUPER BOWL DAY!

I heard yesterday that Thanksgiving and the SUPER BOWL parties are the top food consumptions days with Christmas coming in a close third.

But there are dining differences between Thanksgiving and SUPER BOWL.    At a Thanksgiving meal you are more likely to be with family and  give thanks for the food you are about to partake in and  you stand a better chance of eating a balanced meal.

With watching sports either as a spectator in the stands or on TV you will probably be surrounded with buddies and will probably eat comfort junk food and who would think to give thanks in a rooting and cheering environment?
In one there will most likely be too much alcohol consumed, a lot of screaming,  and name calling and maybe even a fist fight or two… wait, that could be in either group!

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! HAPPY SUPER BOWL DAY!

Since the SUPER BOWL is all about football.  I thought Chicken-fat should jump on the bandwagon and have today's blog all about football cartoons.  And the late cartoonist Jack Davis was an excellent sports illustrator.

PS Did you know that Thanksgiving and The Super Bowl is the top eating events of the year?  And The Super Bowl food is different, it is finger comfort food and can you leap around and hollow and curse and drink too many beers.

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!

Last night on NTFLIX we watched several episodes of the  series RUSSIAN DOLL starring Natasha Lyonne (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK).

I did not know until last night that the little wooden dolls that fit into each other are called RUSSIAN DOLLS.

RUSSIAN DOLL is about a woman keeps having accidents every night that unquestionably kills her instantly then she wakes up in the ladies restroom of a NYC lounge she hangs out in.  Each time she gets up and does live things, hen WHAM!  She gets ran over by a cab or accidentally falls down an elevator shaft or something else deadly.  Also, each time she seems to be chasing her cat that got out of her apartment.  Over and over – almost like he movie GROUNDHOG DAY.

What Cause?

Bill Yopp went to war with his masteer, to be his man servant.  His master was wounded and left.  Bill stayed on as a drummer.
Bill died as an ex-slave.  Before his death he was a doorman of  the Georgia State Legislation Building.  He politicked state representatives to build a retirement home for Confederate Soldiers, which he succeeded.

He is the only person of color buried in the Marietta Confederate Cemetery.

I think he was nuts.

Throwback Thursday: Donald Made Belching Artsy

with an older classman Donald E.  Donald had a way with wise cracks.   He had good delivery with his wit. He called friends “Slobber Butt” which just imagining a butthole slobbering sent me in spasms of laughter.  He had plenty of instant wise-cracks and deserves recognition.

After we grew up Donald went to work for Atlanta Gas Light.  In time he made field supervisor.  I saw him at McDonald’s several often having breakfast with his underlings and handing out work assignments.  We never spoke at McDonald’s, I doubt if he remembers me.

Once  an Atlanta Gas Light employee came to our house to hook up our new stove top and I asked him if he knew Donald.  He did.  I told him some of Donald’s wise cracks, like calling people Slobber Butt and he said, “That’s Donald!”

When we were kids Donald could belch long and steady and even say belched words.  My buddy the late Van Callaway lived in the Latimer Apartments on Atlanta Street, next door to Donald’s family.

Van and I tried to do long belching and make belched words like Donald could but couldn’t.  We went to his apartment and asked him how did he do it.

“Eat a lot of olives” He said.
We tried, it did not work for us.

Hold On!

Before jumping with feet into February there is one more birthday that almost got overlooked:  POPEYE turned 90 on January 17, 1929.  He was created by Elzie Crisler Seger.  He was first in King Features comic strips and Thimble Theater.

Eat your Spinach Souffle today as a birthday cake.

Gadget

We were told by AT&;T if we had a Fiber-net system our on-line service would be much quicker.  So, we ordered Fiber to be installed, whatever that is.

AT&T installed it yesterday.  The technician had to run a line from the telephone pole at the end of our street all the way back to our house and to the basement.  I showed him the basement and I noticed  he was looking up at the ceiling figuring how to run his line so I thought why should he lug his huge ladder to the basement so I told him he should use our shorter step ladder.  His head was almost touching the basement ceiling rafters as he looked down at me and  said "Thank you, but I don't think I will have a problem."  Then I realized he was a very tall person.  I asked him how tall he is  and he said about 6'7"

A funny thing about the Fiber, it is a little gadget he attached to a board of the wood frame that hold the basement steps up.  It needs electricity, so he plugged it in a power strip which is where the ironing board, iron, and radio are plugged in.  He showed me three little lights on it and said if I have problems, come down to the basement and look at this gadget.  If the lights are not on or changed to red something is not right and I need to call them.  He gathered up his tools and left.

We soon discovered our TVs were down and our computers would not go on line.  I rushed downstairs and the little lights he told me about were not on.  We called him, he left us his card.  He said he'll come right back.  I turned on the lights in the basement so he could see better which included the lights over the ironing board which is connected to the same power strip as the gadget is plugged in too.  When I clicked on the power strip to turn on the lights, so did the gadget's lights.  AHAH!

He was pulling in our driveway when I made the discovery.
