Elijah W. Petty

Elijah W. Petty (1858-1927). Elijah is first cousin, twice removed, to me and my Petty first cousins. He is the son of William D. Petty (1834-1917) and Jane "Lizzie" Harris Petty(1841-1899). William is brother to our great grandfather Daniel Webster Petty (1843-1913).
Brothers William and Daniel Petty were born in North Carolina, spent their formative years and married in Fannin County, Georgia. They both fought for the CSA in the Civil War.
Years after the war they both moved on the other side of Fort Mountain, in Murray County, Georgia.
Back to Elijah W. Petty: Elijah secondly married Annie E. (1872-1927). and they had one daughter, Lee Petty . He first married Eliza Jane "Lizzie" Lackey (1858-1899). They apparently had one son: Edward Harlan Petty.
Interesting Elijah's first wife was nicknamed "Lizzie" and his mother was also nicknamed "Lizzie". There were two Lizzie Pettys in the hills of Murray County, Georgia.

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! Thank You For Your Service

There seems to be a surge of patriotism thanking serviceman and ex-servicemen for their service.  To jump on the bandwagon, here I go again, with a story out of MAD Comicbook #10 G.I. SHMOE illustrated by Wally Wood and written by Harvey Kurtzman.  As usual, click on each panel to read the balloons and to see what is going on.

Trhowback Thursday, Marietta Train Depot

Throwback Thursday:  I remember these windows and door well.  It was the ticket office of the Marietta Railway Office where one would buy train tickets.  Now it is the Marietta Welcome and Visitors’ Center.  The late Van Calloway and I, In our preteen years many days after playing hide-‘n-seek in the halls and rooms-for-rent next door at the Kennesaw House we would come here to see his father who was a ticket window representative for the Railroad, and Van would beg for money to go see a movie at the Strand.

Van died in the  1990s.  He was a diabetic.  For diabetic medical needs they amputated Van’s leg.  The wrong leg.  He died.

1st Day of School 1947

This picture was taken in early September 1947 in our front yard on the corner of Wayland and Waddell Streets in the Clay Homes. We are suppose to be looking gloomy because it is the first day of school.
It was my very first day of school. I went to the first grade that year.

Left to right: Jeane Steele, Billy Somebody (who later moved to Gramling Street), Eddie Hunter (that's me), Frances Hunter, and Helen Steele.
After that school year, the next summer we moved in my grandfather, but we still went to the same school (Waterman Street School).

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! MADDE

Since you did  not know until Trump's speech that they had air planes back in Colonial Days you probably also did not know they had  MAD Magazine back then.  They just spelled it differently, that's all.
Here are some random samples.  Please be sure and click on each panel when you look at it.

Mama and Grandma Petty and Frances

New Phys Ed Discovery

My left leg is still very painful when in use.  However, I found a way to sidestep it.  Really!  Literally sidestep it!  By accident I discovered if I lead with my left foot and walk sideways it is not nearly as painful to walk.  It is tolerable.  However, that the left foot only.  To walk sideways with my right foot leading  is just as painful as before.

Who’s that nut walking like a crab?

Throwback Thursday, Roman Candle Burning

Throwback Thursday Memories.  When I was a preteen one time, I don’t remember how, I gained possession of a Roman Candle.
I couldn’t wait to try it.  It would have been at its best in the darkness of night but I was too impatient.
In our front yard on Manget Street I stabbed it into the ground, in an upright position, got some matches and lit it.  Nothing happened.
I picked it up and shook it and something happened.  The sharp evil looking flame leaped out like a blowtorch.  I was holding it with one hand and it was over the burning end.
My hand was scorched.  I was in agony.
Besides being hurt real bad I was facing two other problems:  (1) At the time Fireworks were illegal in Georgia and (2) My daddy was Chief of the Marietta Police.
The only thing I wanted to do was morn my pain alone.  I told my mother I was going to the Strand Theater to a matinee to see the latest movie.  Which I did.
I told the girl at the refreshment counter my problem and told me to buy a large Coke and she would keep it filled with ice and either water or Coke.  She told me she would keep it full with ice and liquid as long as I used the cup.  The cups were accountable – Coke and water wasn’t.
I sat in agony for two showings of the movie.  Sometimes I soaked it in ice water and other times Coke.  Finally, the pain lost it grip and I returned home and just kept that hand out of view for a few days.
The message here is be careful with fireworks Fool!

Jones Reunion

This is the Jones family of the Alpharetta, Cumming, and Milton area at their 1929 Reunion. Notice the males are on the left and females on the right. That may be the same protocol of country churches back then: There were two doors, one for the men and the other for women. My mother-in-law, Marie, age 9 at the time, was on the right and her two younger brothers were on the left.
