No Swan Lake for Me

I have fell twice recently. Once in a parking lot, which I fell flat on my face, or head, as the scabs proved. How that happened was my foot was asleep, as it has happened many times before in a car (also movie theaters) and when I got out of the car and took a step it was like falling into nothingness, the WHAM! I have tried walking many times before with a foot asleep after getting out of a car and no problem, the movement woke itself up. The second time I fell was in our own house. I normally wake up before anybody else and with the house dark feel by touch and memory feel my way to the kitchen to start myself a nice cup of coffee. But this time I was feeling with my memory guiding me and thought a door to another room was yet a few feet away and I was feeling for the wall that should have been there and it wasn’t the door was there, which I fell into, bashing my head and body anito furniture. Here we go again! I thought. We got an appointment with a physical therapist (PT). for him to rate my balance. He had me fill out a two page questionnaire, then walk around, turn around, stand on one foot then the other foot, and so on. One thing I cannot do for sure is stand on one foot balanced and also stand on one foot with my eyes closed. So now, at least we know I cannot keep my balance on one leg, so no need trying to audition as a ballet dancer. Pilloretting is out of the question.

Party of Two

We hired a man to help us do some various chores that needed to be done. This morning he mentioned he worked for Lockheed as a buyer. Anna told him she worked at Lockheed for Department of Defense as a contract administrator.
The more they talked they realized they worked in the same building at Lockheed, and probably the same floor about twenty years ago.
Small world.
That reminds me of the time in a restaurant in downtown Marietta we went to a restaurant and there was about a 15 minute wait. We put our names in and sat down and had a friendly conversation with another couple. We made small talk talking about Marietta and how it had changed and so on.
Then the hostess said, “Hunter, party of two.”
Anna and I stood up and so did the couple we were talking to.
The guy and I are first cousins and just did not recognized each other.

Broken Arms

My facebook friend Judy broke her arm while vacuuming. Of course, I had to tell her about my broken arm: Judy, I’m so sorry. It is never pleasant to have to deal with a broken limb. I broke my arm in my preteens at a wresting match. I think there were to be 3 bouts and the 3rd one of the contenders was either a gorilla or a bear. I wanted to see it so Daddy took me to Larry Bell Park, where they hold such events in Marietta. . Daddy hung out at the concession counter talking to someone he knew. A found a friend and we sat together and near a cute little girl sitting with her parents. The little girl kept her eyes on us and giggled as we showed off. I thought I would really impress her when I did a spectacular leap from the top of the bleachers to about 4 rows down. My plan did not work, I tumbled and broke my left arm.
My arm was bent. I was in pain. My covered my arm with my light jacket and found daddy hanging out at the concession stand talking to Elizabeth Sullivan, a family friend. I told him I didn;t feel good, I wanted to go home. Being a cop he said what's wrong wih your arm? You have it covered? He yanked the jacked off my arm, which make me grunt painfully and saw what I hiding. Daddy took me to the new Kennestone Hospital. The medical people gave me ether, I think, and set my arm with a cast. I had to stay overnight and they were not organized yet. I wasn’t a toddler or an adult. They put me in a very young kids ward. Kids crying. I deserved that for showing off like a fool.

I'm All Mess Up, ummmhmm

I was trying to imitate Elvis in the above title. Did you feel like dancing. Wait! Now, that I think about it, it was "I'm All Shook up!" Well, with a whole series of of trial and errors it appears that the stuff already here has been compromised. Even the pictures are nothing but numebrs, letters, and symbol.. but when I publish the very post it comes out clear and precise as you might expect my post to do....or not.So, S So, with luck, it looks like I can still post. It is just the ones I have previoulsly posted look idiot-whack in here, the blog mind, but when published they look like the charming (ahem) struff you have grown to expect on chicken-fa. Shall I say "YaHoo!" and hit the sign with a bat?

We are still straightening out the basement. Today I came across a bunch of forgotten pictures. This is my late mother Janie Ethel America Petty Hunter and my son Rocky. Rocky looks about 3 or 4 years old.

Lilly Henry Petty (1886-1983)

Lilly Henry Petty (1886-1983),. Lilly Henry married James M. "Jim" Petty (1882-1956), 21 May 1903, in Murray County, Georgia. Jim was 21 and Lilly was 16. They lived on Jim Petty Road in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia.
Jim was a farmer and when we visited them a couple of times when I was a kid. He also raised collie dogs.
They had nine children. One was a doctor, Glenn Petty, in Chattanooga who lived on Lookout Mountain. Once I read an article about Glenn's daughter Gail Petty, who went to West Point and after she was to graduate she and her brother had plans ride their bikes Maine to Florida. Another son of Jim and Lilly, Carton Petty, developed a huge farm that had its own FAA registered airport to fly out its produce. Another son Cecil, is the only son I have met. He was genuine a down-to-earth nice fellow. I am also related to Cecil's wife Mildred Baxter, through the Bookout family.
Mildred and I are both descended from Jesse Bookout, who was an overseer of Chief Vann's plantation slaves. By the way, then, it was against Georgia's law for a white man to work for an Native American. the Georgia Militia surrounded the plantation to put an end to Jesse's employment.
Jim and Lilly are buried at Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery - Murray Co., GA.
I had the pleasure of taking these pictures of Lilly in August 1978, when she was about age 92, about five years before she died. She was sharp as a tack and witty, with a wry sense of humor. One interesting story she told me was that her husband and other of his siblings had to hold down their brother Erwin Petty, while their uncle Dr. William Virgil Garrett, removed Erwin's frostbit toes without anesthesia. She was living with her son Carlton* at the time, in a big stone house on the Cleveland Highway.
*I did not get to meet Carlton on that visit, he was out in the fields working... as they say, make hay in the sunshine.

Messed up!

I do not know if you can read this or not. But since I have been here last (yesterday) something happened to all my blogs, jumbled up the words into some kind of codes. Sorry.

The Underground and I

Me & the late Underground Cartoonist Skip Williamson

At Krogers the other day I saw a lady, probably in her 40s, wearing a gray t shirt saying, “I LOVE UNDERGROUND BOOKS”

Underground books?  I have been a fan of underground comics, which I have become friends with some Underground cartoon artists, such as the late Skip Willamson;  and friends with an editor of an underground magazine (THE REALIST Paul Krassner), and the person considered the Father of Underground comic, Harvey Kurtzman *(creator of MAD- and also said he would demand a blood test to see if he really is the father of underground cartoons).

·       We had a one sentence per letter communication going between us.  I think it lasted about 4 or 5 letter swaps, which lasted over a year.

But what about underground books?  I looked up Underground Books on the internet and don’t any more than before.  They had about 6 bookstores that called themselves Underground Bookstores.  They all displayed books they had for sale, the only ones I recognized and read were the Kurt Vonnegut  books.

So, back to the egg and cheese section of Krogers, the lady with the I LOVE UNDERGROUND BOOKS! Tshirt.  Should I speak to her, telling her I know some underground stuff too, but not books.  I am at least twice her age, so it cannot sound like a pickup line, I just wanted to drop some underground creative people I have been friends with.  Why did she wear the t-shirt if she didn’t wan to discuss t he subject or at least get a thumbs up.

Not me.  I’m not a conversationist starter to strangers.

Dora Hunter Spiva

Yesterday I was thinking about Blairsville, Georgia, and the annual Hunter Reunion that is held there every year. Here is a picture of the last Hunter Reunion I attended in June 2008. Left to right: I don't know, Franklin Hunter, Dora Hunter Spiva, and me. The following February Dora died at age 104. On that day she was witty, spry, and had a sharp mind.
Franklin looks like he would like to wipe that smile off my face.

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! D DAY from EC's TWO-FISTED TALES Comicbook

Before MAD Comicbook creator and editor of MAD was the editor, Harvey Kurtzman,  of two war comicbooks for EC Publishing Company.  He wrote and researched every story.  He or his assistant researched military uniforms and incidents in each war.  Being a perfectionist,  a war story would take time.  He and his wife was having a hard time making ends meet.  He went to the publisher, Bill Gaines and asked for a raise.  He knew the editor of the EC horror and supernatural comics, Al Felstein was making much more money, and used that as an argument.   Gaines pointed out that Feldsteins generated more comics.  His war comics took up too much time (although they were historically accurate).  In order to make more money Kurtzman would have to create a comic that brought in more income and profit.

Then MAD comic was suggested.  Harvey Kurtzman said he suggested it and William Gaines said he suggested it.  Who knows?    The good thing about MAD it took hardly any research at all.

But, back to the war comics Harvey Kurtzman generated.  This one is D DAY.  It is personal favorite of mine because I had two uncles in the middle of it, June 6, 1944, my mother’s brother and my father’s brother.

Story by GOD and Harvey Kurtzman, edited b Harvey Kurtzman and illustrated by John Severin.

Daniel Webster Petty's Kids

Daniel Webster and Sarah Jane Garrett Petty.
Here are five of their six children. The one missing is our grandfather William Elijah Joseph Petty, he may be behind the camera, but I doubt it.
Here is a brief description of the siblings in the picture:
Left to right, first row: Dawson Wesley Petty (1879-1960), James M. "Jim" Petty, and Ervin Petty (1882 - ? ).
Second row: Sarah Alice Petty (1874-1958) and Nancy Jane Petty (1877-1965). I get these two sisters mixed up, name wise, I don't know which is which.
Jim Petty lived on Jim Petty and his family had a farm on Jim Petty Road in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia. Jim and Lillie Henry had 9 children. One became a heart surgeon in Chattanooga, by the way, he had a daughter who graduated from West Point, and road a bike from New England to Florida with her brother, after he graduation. Jim had another son, Carton Petty, who became a very productive farmer so much that he owned a bank in Chatsworth.
One time Jim's siblings had to hold him down so their uncle, Doctor Willis Garrett, could amputate his frostbit toes.
Siblings Alice, Nancy, and Wesley never married. They lived together on a farm in a big unpainted two story house on a little dirt road directly behind Jim and Lillie's house. When I was a preteen we visited them often for Sunday dinner. I couldn't stand their milk from their cow, it was bitter. Wesley was the last of the three to live. He died in a house fire, living alone.
Ervin Petty I don't think I ever met. Early in life he moved to Detroit to find work and married a lady who owned a boarding house. They had a daughter that ran away to work in a circus.
