Umbrella Rock, small world

I think Umbrella Rock is on the summit of Lookout Mountain over looking Chattanooga.  It is next what was a Union Post in the Civil War.

The  black and white picture is the Moon family visiting Umbrella Rock.  The Moon family members are related to Anna’s mother through her father’s family.

The sepia color picture is the Wright family visiting Umbrella Rock.  The Wright family members are related to Anna’s father’s mother’s family.

Apparition

In 1977, my late old friend I grew up with, Sam Carsley, and I went on a photo mission to Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. I was particularly interested in taking pictures of stain glass in crypts. At certain times with certain crypts the sun shine illuminates certain positioned windows with stained glass and you get a beautiful picture. That day I took maybe 4 or 5 and some other cemetery related stuff. Nothing struck me as usual.
This is before digital photography, so most of us had to send our film off to be developed.
When I got the pictures back this one looks interesting. I think I will call it an Apparition.

HAPPY FATHERS' DAY EVE!!

The Bob Bettis Family of Bob Bettis Road

Sitting holding the two boys is Ida Lavonia Prance Ray, wife of Bob Bettis.  I think the two boys she is holding are Hugh Lee and Ray Bettis.  The two young ladies are Lela Pearl and Mary Bettis.

Of course, I could be wrong.

The  driveway to the far right was their farm’s driveway.   Later it became Bob Bettis Road.

The Big Dive

Jenna Bush on THE TODAY SHOW yesterday jumped out live of a plane. She landed live too. Of course she had a pro jumper to guide and helped her. There were several others with cameras to provide live action for THE TODAY SHOW surrounding them. Jenna’s grandfather, Former President G.W. Bush had a thing about jumping out of planes on his late in years birthdays, so her jump was partly to honor him.
I think it would be funny and add to the excitement when they first were free falling both say at the same time, “Parachute? I thought you brought it!” Then say “Just Joking!”
Good show!

Tit for Tat

I remember many years ago the Vietnam Talks had a hard time starting because of the seating arrangements at the big conference table, like who would sit where. If I remember correctly, everybody wanted to sit at the head of the table.
The problem was solved by bringing in a big around table.
Now, we have a serious meeting between President Biden and President Putin. I’m sure pre-talks rules were held by underlings to keep every equal but respectful for each.
I just saw a live picture of the two presidents standing side by side before their serious meeting was to start.
I noticed that Biden is taller than Putin. Opps!
Evidently the USSR underling did not notice that.
Height represents superiority.
I think if their heights were caught, they would have Putin stand on a stepstool and the camera people would be instructed only to photograph the two leaders from the chest up. Problem solved.

Troop 132

Boy Scout Camp, Troop 132. Camping out at George and Mike Hobby's daddy's property he bought off Macland Road.

Left to Right: Mickey Griffin, ?, Me, and Tony Hester.
That was the night George Hobby raised my sleeping bag up on a flag pole and blasted it with a shotgun. .... all, in good old boy fun.
Mickey Griffin was a fun loving kid. He used to walk around with me and my dog named Skipper when I delivered The Atlanta Journal newspapers and we do all kinds of mischievous tricks.
When I think of Tony Hester I remember the time I was showing him and Gene Sanges a trick I learned: climb up one small tree, and at the top get it swinging and when it swung wide enough I could gracefully grab an identical size and type tree, latch on to it and artfully shinny down the tree. I already did it twice alone, now I was ready to show off for an audience. I got Tony and Gene down at the bottom watching me and I skillfully climbed the tree near the top and got it swinging back and forth like I did two other times. That is the last thing I remembered for several hours, the tree top broke and I fell to the ground and was knocked out. Tony thought I was playing a joke and went home and got his wagon and came back and he and Gene put me in the wagon and carried me to his back yard where his two little sisters Peggy and Lulu were playing with their dolls. Tony told me if I didn't get up he was going to take off my clothes. I didn't get up and they took off my clothes. Then they thought I was dead. They put me back in the wagon (naked) and carried me home, over a block away. Nobody was at home so they left me in my bed an left.
Later my parents came home and was startled to see me in bed in the middle of the day, naked, and I had no idea why.
The lightening in that picture looks something like the Blair Witch Project doesn't it?

My New Base

Last Throwback Thursday I told of getting my orders and traveling tickets to the USS J.K. TAUSSIG at NAS Lakehurst, NJ..
The plane was either Delta or Eastern Airlines. The only person I remember on board was an Arabic looking character in a suit that looked very hyper and nervous, but international. In today’s world probably have a U.S. Marshall would be watching his every move.
At the Philadelphia Airport outside were taxis and limos. One limo looked reasonable (old and dirty) so I asked the driver how much. I forgot how much he said, but it was more than I had a couple of dollars. Which I told him. He came down on his price to $8 to the Philadelphia Bus Station. Which I took.
If I only knew what I found out about a year later: I was on duty one night and a person called at the Philadelphia Airport saying he had orders but no transportation authorization to get into town to take the bus. I was immediately dispatched with a Naval sedan to pick him up. I remember it was pouring down rain. Also, the person I picked up was from Marietta and a distant cousin. Small world.
Back to my own trip: I was very entertained looking out at the New Jersey countryside. I was under the impression that everything north of Washington DC was slums and crowded buildings. Not so, I was seeing farms, pastures, little model Main Street USA villages, each one picturesque.
The bus pulled in front of a high chain fence, a gate and a two storied house with the sign WELCOME TO NAS LAKEHURSRT, NEW JERSEY.
I have arrived.
Visible beyond the fence about a quarter of a mile was the largest hangar I have even seen. It was built to house blimps. I did not know it at the time but the German’s famous Hinderburg airship exploded at its front door in 1939. At that time it was only about 24 years before.
I carried my duffle bag inside the double level white house. Inside the first room was a long counter. Behind the counter was a chief petty officer, a man in his blues, and an officer. The smiling chief greeted me. The guy in the blues studied me with his arms folded. The young officer did not bother to look up from the newspaper he had on his desk.
I handed the chief my orders. He did a double take and reread them. Then he stepped over to the officer and pointed to a specific line on my orders.
One of the men, I forgot which one, said, “USS J.K. TAUSSIG?” “We are 13 miles from the nearest ocean, we don’t have any ships here – the is a Naval Air Station.”
I wanted to say, “That’s not my problem.” But instead tried looking surprised. I’m not good at looking surprised. My hypertension is always snoozing.
I said, “Now, what?”
This was on a Friday night.
The chief said they would call and get it straightened out.
After a call or two they found out the offices that would take care of orders and mistakes would be closed over the weekend, to call back Monday. I’m glad no invasions were planned for that weekend.
They said I could stay in the base’s main barracks for the weekend and they gave me a temporarily chow hall pass.
By this time it was late. I was getting tired.
The other guy in the room was the duty driver. He drove me to the Main Barracks.
It was past 10pm, all the lights were out except the Exit sign above the doorway. In the almost pitch blackness I don’t know how I picked out a vacant bunk or “rack” as they were often called, but I found one. I undressed down to my skivvies and immediately went to sleep.
Not more than one hour later I had a bad dream. I didn’t know it was a dream, I thought if real life was. I dreamed I was in the barracks in Charleston and outside bombs were exploding all around the building and low flying fighter jets were rat-a-tat-tat sailors running. I jumped up horrified. I ran for the red light Exit sign and ran out in the passageway (Navy talk). Two young men in civilian clothes looked at me shocked. They did not know at this very moment we were being attacked by the Russians! I ran up to hem and warned them. They looked at me puzzled. I was standing in my underwear, probably hyperventilating trying to explain it to them. They saw the problem, the problem was I had a bad dream. They politely calmed me down and told me I was having a bad dream.
I woke up. Oops!
Then I had the task of finding my rack in a big room full of racks. Somehow I did. I think I systematically counted the number of double bunks from the Exit door or something similar.
In the morning I went to the chow hall for breakfast. About four tables over was the same two men that interrupted my dream were eating breakfast looking at every move I was making and whispering to themselves. I was on display.
We became friends and I even rode with them to North Carolina the upcoming October on a leg of my journey back to Georgia to pick up my car. One was from North Carolina and the other from the Bronx.
If the information about my little bad dream fell into the wrong hands could result in a medical discharge.
On Monday morning, I became under the Personnel office until they could get my assignment straighten out. To earn my keep my job was to scrub the administration’s hallway floors, opps! I mean the passageway decks.
And they assigned my sleeping to be on the top floor of the house at the gate that I first checked in at. It was also the office and sleeping quarters of SPs and Security. I had my own private bedroom for a over two weeks until my orders were straightened out.

My Aunt Lela Octavia "Tade" Tyson Carr

My grandmother Hunter’s sister is/was Lela Octavia “Tade” Tyson Carr (1888-1957).  She married E.J. Carr 4 December 1948) and that is all we know about E.J. Carr, his name..  Oh yes, we also know he was buried at Mars Hill Babtist Church Cemetery, Acworth, Georgia.

In my preteen years, too young for driver’s license, I used to go to Acworth Beach somehow, and afterwards, walk about three blocks away, to Tade’s house and call Daddy to come and pick me up.  I remember she next door to a school.  About two streets south of Main Street.  So, I waited on Daddy and Aunt Tade would pump me of questions.

Here are some pictures to slide Aunt Tade through time.  Tade as a young teenager; Tade with a car; Tade at the Confederate Memorial in Marietta’s Confederate Cemetery; And Tade with her sister Annie  Tyson Crowder on her right, as she looks judgmentally on her sister Minnie Tyson Hunter (my grandmother) on her right..

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! MAD Comicbook's #10

Cover by editor Harvey Kurtzman, PANIC ad inside page Jack Davis,  Story by Harvey Kurtzman, Artt by Will Elder

What you do not see:  The original Wonder Woman character was created by college  professor William Moulton Marston (1893-1947) Comic-book  publisher Max Gaines agreed to give him a chance.  It paid off.

Max Gaines died in a boating accident in north state New York.  The comicbook company was left to his son William Gaines, who didn't want it and decided to dismount it.  But he had a change of heart and took an interest in creating comicbooks and stories.  One of the people he hired, Harvey Kurtzman created (mostly) MAD Comicbook.  Issue #10 lampooned WONDER WOMAN.

Talk about coming  a full circle!.

Click on each page to make it bigger, better, readable, and maybe understandabler.

C2009.  Steve Tolbert and Ronnie Knighton standing in the very spot Varner’s was at a meeting to talk about having a Varners’ Reunion.  Steve was a bailiff  and Ronnie is a lawyer, maybe they were discussing the court system.

Boo!

The Marietta Museum of History had an interesting head-scratcher today.  Museum’s Amy and Christa visited Brawner’s in Smyrna today and had a live show from there.

Brawner’s is very much embedded in Cobb County History.  I’m not  sure what is now, but many years ago and was a privately ran sanitarium.  There were many tales that was about that place.

As usual Amy, Christa, and someone of knowledgeable  authority talked about Brawner’s. live.  And I think they walked around pointing out things of interest.

They got to a certain place on the property, an area that was rumored to be haunted, and their sound system went haywire, and all talking sounded like birds chirping.  A lot of the viewers, including us, sent them instant messages telling them we could not understand a word they were saying.

Then the video system shut itself down.  And had an electronic readout that said something like, “NOT WORKING.”

Then they walked to another area it came back on and started working on its own.

Wow!

Boo!

Hunters on Waterman Street

This is the house my father was born in. It was on Waterman Street at Waddell Street. I got to take a picture of it before it was bulldozed a couple years ago to make way for progress....(?)

the next picture is the Hunters out front of the house on Waterman Street.
Left to right: 1st Row, Ed (Daddy) and W.C. Hunter
2nd Row: Bus, Bee, Herbert, and their father Frank Paris Hunter
Back: Minnie Victoria Tyson Hunter.
Notice the way Minnie is looking at Frank: it looks to me like pure admiration.
Ed was born in 1911. He looks about 2 years old. The pictures was probably taken made about 1913.

Elijah W. Petty

Elijah W. Petty (1858-1927). Elijah is first cousin, twice removed, to me and my Petty first cousins. He is the son of William D. Petty (1834-1917) and Jane "Lizzie" Harris Petty(1841-1899). William is brother to our great grandfather Daniel Webster Petty (1843-1913).

Brothers William and Daniel Petty were born in North Carolina, spent their formative years and married in Fannin County, Georgia. They both fought for the CSA in the Civil War.
Years after the war they both moved on the other side of Fort Mountain, in Murray County, Georgia.
Back to Elijah W. Petty: Elijah secondly married Annie E. (1872-1927). and they had one daughter, Lee Petty . He first married Eliza Jane "Lizzie" Lackey (1858-1899). They apparently had one son: Edward Harlan Petty.
Interesting Elijah's first wife was nicknamed "Lizzie" and his mother was also nicknamed "Lizzie". There were two Lizzie Pettys in the hills of Murray County, Georgia.
