ALEXANDER HAMILRTON & Sound Effects

We watched ALEXANDER HAMILTON again. This time we watched it with the closed caption option on. Of course it is ment for the hearing impaired and people who does not know the actual language being used, we could have selected English, French, Spanish, and who knows? If Red-Neck was an option I would probably select that.
Not only did it tell us what the words being spoken was, but other sounds. Example (Marching Drums). (Applause) (Laughter), (Whistling) and so on.
I was thinking of human sound effects I have heard in live theater or movies, such as (two different nursing homes on 4 different rows with the hard of hearing ladies hollering at each other), (Woman: How Dare You?” followed by a slap), (radio on), (people talking on cell phones), (candy wrappers tearing), (Hissing), (a fart followed by “Who farted? Followed by giggling), (whispering), (kiss smacking), (name calling), (screaming), and last but not least (someone saying a complete sentence in a long burp sound).

SUNDAY FUNNIES!! CRACKED with artist John Severin

This is pulled (or ripped) out of an old CRACKED magazine.  The noteworthy about this is that the artist is John Severin, one of the four original artists of MAD Comics who got MAD popular..

Thrilling Days of Yesteryear

MAD's two take-offs on the LONE RANGER, both illustrated by Jack Davis.

Do you hear the William Tell Overture playing? Look up on top of the row of buildings at the big graceful white horse running and leaping from roof top to roof top! Who is that man with the 10 gallon white hat riding the horse? It is me! Suddenly the horse gracefully leaps off the last building and we land on a train speeding down the tracks, then we do some more graceful tricks, topped off by me lassoing a RR water tower and gracefully swinging off the white horse and train onto another train top to land on two men and give them a good whipping. All in a days work. That is what I sat through while eating popcorn yesterday. The new LONG RANGER movie was exciting, energized, if not just darn funny at times which I couldn't help but think of the Road Runner cartoons. I half way expected them to use Acme Dynamite to blow up the railway bridge. It was good entertainment and don't spoil it by thinking Clayton Moore and Jay Siilverheels could do a better job. People generally have a hard time accepting replacements, like Roger Moore vs Sean Connery, my 3rd grade teacher... The Lone Ranger story of how he was first a Texas Ranger, in a group, pursing the Caviness gang, when the outlaws ambushed them and he was the only survivor and was nursed back to health by an Indian remained intact - then they let their creative liberties go wild. I saw things that reminded me of the last ZORRO movie, THE WILD WEST, and ..... and.. the road runner. Wait! I feel the need to jump from building to building again and gracefully swing on my rope.

The Wright Brothers of Woodsttock, Ga

The Wright Brothers, c1890. The Wright family members lived around Canton Road north of Kurtz Road and up the road to Woodstock, Georgia.
A photographer probably came to town, set up a backdrop and took group photos for a fee. These six brothers are the sons of Isaac and Loveuia Adeline St. John Wright: They are Henry Gable, William "Bill", George "Dave", James T. "Jim", Berry Jackson "Kid", and Simon Wright.
I don't know what order the names are in, in relation to the brothers in the picture, like left to right (like I'm use to) or what.
The only person I think Ican identify is Henry Gable Wright, which is Anna's great grandfather, on the far right, or is that him second from the far right?

The two other pictures are Henry with his wife Lula Kuykendall and Henry sitting with his legs crossed.

Monty and his Party Boat

Some time  in our high school days, late 1950s, my friend Monty decided to build a cabin with Lake Allatoona as frontage.  How we got the materials to build the cabin are several long boring stories I will not bore you with, besides I’m not sure if the statue of limitations has ran out yet.

Monty picked a place for the cabin in a little cove just before the Boy Scout property began.  He said the cove  had the longest view of the lake.

He did all he was suppose to do, he thought.  I think one could lease the land for 99 years either from the Army Corps of Engineers or Georgia Power, I forgot which.  I think there was a stipulation you must live on the leased land at least one day per month.

So, we hauled the materials up there, it took many trips.  Monty and other friends did the nailing and digging.  I know I know nothing about building, so I was a gopher.

I remember we got the cement blocks base laid in balanced harmony and had par of the frame up when WHAM!  One day we got thee and the Army Corps of Engineers ordered for it to be torn down.  The lot it was built on land lower than Lake Allatoona’s highest mark..

We had to tear it down.

But being resourceful like Monty is, he decided to take the lumber and build a houseboat.

He took the boards and made what looked like a large floor.  I forgot how he did it, but underneath the large floor were frames about the same width and height as a 55 gallon drums.  On a cold Thanksgiving we stripped down to our jockey shorts and pried one 55 gallon drum at a time under the big floor or platform.  In the water,  once a drum is placed it is floating so it can’t go down, and cannot so sideways or forward because a board would be blocking it.

It seems like it took 18 55 gallon drums.  Again, I won’t bore you with where the drums came from.

Sometime or another we, via the water, floated the platform around the bend to Victoria Landing.  They had electrical  power sources.

Monty built a cabin that was shaped like a pup tent.  It had a loft for sleeping and counter to cook.  Not bad.

Then he changed it to what looked like a regular weekend fishing  houseboat.

One time on Easter morning a bunch of us went swimming (in our underwear) and got drunk and visited some friends’ parents, who we did not know were having an Easter Party on their Boathouse and we crashed into the boathouse damaging it.

At work that Monday morning I was telling a friend that worked the same place about the swimming, the drunkenness', and the crash into the boathouse and she said, “Rock!  Didn’t you freeze your balls off?”  I thought one co-worker, a deacon would choke on his donut.

I do not remember why but Monty decided to change the house boat from looking like a giant pup tent to looking like a floating camp, but we did.

Bubba Johnson liked what we did and decided he and his friends would do the same.  They built the floating platform  and built the frame.  And decided to have a party to celebrate the frame looking so perfect.  I was not there that day, but this is what I heard.  They were all drunk, sitting on the rafters and all.  They started singing anti-religious songs.  Mike was the leader of the songs.  One girl told mike to stop singing bad songs about Jesus because something bad would happen to him.  He sung louder.  Then thunder and lightening came and somehow the frames began folding like dominoes and fell into the lake  Several kids fell in too.

The girls said something like, “Mike!  I warned you!”

No reply.

Mike?

No reply.

Where is Mike?

Then they heard his whispering voice:  “Help me.”

Only Mike’s arms were sticking out of the pile of lumber.  Everybody jumped in and drug him out of he water.  He was rushed to the hospital.  He had a punctured lung.  He lived.

Skip Williamson, the late

Skip Williamson (1944-2017). Skip was an underground cartoonist. In the mid 1990s I heard he and his family (Harriet and their twin daughters) moved to Marietta. I knew of Skip’s art in various cartoon work in underground comix and HELP magazine. He bought a house from my one-time postal Supervisor Stan. Stan did bodywork part time and rigged up his garage with ideal lighting for painting cars, which also was ideal lighting for drawing underground comix.
For the heck of it, what do I have to lose? I called Skip and welcomed him to Marietta and we invited me over for a beer. That beer grew intro many more with many more visits. We had the same MAD heroes and he did a lot of cartoons for Harvey Kurtzman’s HELP Magazine, an example here.
Looking up a his living dates I read he was called a “rambunctious cartoonist”. He was. He was also a rambunctious friend. His last art work that I know of was painting on nude women at a club of Ponce de Leon in Atlanta.
They moved again and we lost touch. I hated to read that he died.

Missed

WAIT! I know I have already submitted a Marie's Postcard from her collection today. Then, while scanning more cards, I came across this one. Frankly, I just could wait until tomorrow to post it. Who knows I'll be alive then?
For y'all new- comers to Cobb County, this is the old Cobb County Courthouse, which was demolished because bricks were falling off it, suspiciously. The commissioner at that time Herbert McCollum wanted the Courthouse with a new modern look anyway so what a coincidence that bricks were falling off, time to bulldoze out the old and build a new one! Progress!
Can you look at this postcard and tell me what part of the day it is? Morning of course! I say as I beat you over the head with my ballcap.

Big Adventure?

Today, 56 years ago, July 9, 1965, was the last day of my two-active duty in the Navy. This picture is me playing in a Bell Helicopter at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey. Does it remind you of Sean Connery in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE or Pee Wee Herman and his new bike in PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE?

Giggling at Funerrals

One morning years ago THE TODAY SHOW their guest was a psychiatrist. People emailed her in questions. One of the questions was, "is it OK to laugh hysterically at a funeral?" She said indeed it is and went on to explain why. It had to do with how stressful death is and the least bit of comedy relief might just be the pressure release valve needed and she added, although the other people at the funeral might not like it.

It reminded of June 1960. I and five other teenage friends were pallbearers at another friend's funeral who was killed in a car wreck. The burial was at a little country church near Woodstock, Little River Methodist Church. Now, it is on the edge of a four lane highway across from Wamart, but back then it was out in the country. The cemetery is rolling with small hills. We had to carry the casket up and down a small hill or two. When we first started one of us known for his farts let out a loud fart. It was loud enough for all us to hear for quiet enough for the people walking behind us not to hear it. Five of us got the giggles. Although minutes ago we were sobbing, but at that moment we could hardly carry the casket because we were shaking and trying to swallow our giggles. Except one of us who was highly mad at us for making light of it all, while we were giggling he was whispering cursing us.
Also on the same subject, reminds me of a funeral in Dalton, Georgia, of my mother's sister. At the burial, it was pouring down rain. After the burial we were waiting in our car when a family friend walked up with his umbrella and said the age-old pun, "Think it'll rain?" Which cracked all my immediate family in the car up. The car shook with hysterical laughter.

Cliffs in North Georgia

About ten miles north of Dahlonega on Hwy 19 is a fork in the road.  With a big pile of rocks or stones.  The body of Indian Princess Trahyla is under those rocks.  She lived nearby.  She heard if she drunk a certain potion it was give her eternal life.  Well, the proof is in the pudding.  She is dead under a pile of rocks.

Also, Princess Trahyla started a fad.  A new superstition that travelers traveling by, if they would throw a stone or pebble on the Princess’s grave they will eternal youth.   Again?

If you stayed on Hwy 19 you would enter Union County and go over blood Mountain.  On the way down you would cross over The Appalachian Trail, see Volge State Park, and finally reach Blairsville,.

If you took the left Fork you would be on Hwy 60.  There you would so through the little town Suches, and next a bigger town, Morganton.

In 1960 I got drunk, or tipsy,  with Billy and Buddy. And ended up spending the night at Buddy’s house, who lived on Page Street.  I suppose I made arrangements with Larry to pick me up at their house.  Larry and friends came and picked me up before midnight.

We had a plan.

Larry drove us through Dahlonega and turned left at Princess Trahlyla’s stone grave, went a couple more miles and pulled over.

On one side of us was a mountain and the other side was a cliff.

The bottom of the cliff was the root of our plan.  Larry heard that at the bottom of that cliff were many smashed cars.  He heard the locals would push their cars off the cliff at that point and then collect from their insurance policy.  Larry figured there were probably some good auto parts we could salvage.

However, at that moment it was pitched black over the cliff.  We would have to wait for daylight to come.

Anytime we had  idle time Larry would build a fire.  We looked around the edge of the woods and found kindling wood, logs, and all we needed.  We built a big fire in the middle or the road.  We figured no fool would be driving on it in he middle of the night.

We were sitting around the roaring fire talking and laughing when I thought I heard the distant noise of a truck engine.  I called my friends attention to the noise.  It was getting louder.  Then we cold see two headlights going around curves not far away.

We decided the only thing we could do is run!

A big truck was upon us as we scattered.  The driver did not even apply his brakes, he might have even stepped on the gas and plowed right through it.  With burning logs rolling and red sparks flying up in the black air.

I don’t know why we didn’t get the heck out of there.  But we didn’t.

When daylight came Larry pulled out long ropes and cables out of his trunk and we began to lower ourselves down on the ropes.

As I said, only a few hours before I was drunk.  Now, I was dangling on a waving rope in midair.  I got sick, my head started spinning and all I could do was hold on for dear life.  I vomited.

Jenky was below me hanging on the same rope.  My puke splattered on him.  He hollered, but hung on.  He did not see the humor in at that moment but later he did.

At the bottom of the cliff there were a few cars turned all which ways.  But all he parts have been stripped.  A bunch of crooks beat us to our plan.

Jenky died in a drag race a couple months later.

It also reminded me of an Atlanta  Postal Maintenance guy named Mr. Wellborn.  Mr. Wellborn worked at the Federal Annex in Atlanta.  He was an air conditioner specialist.  I was a clerk in the maintenance department for a few months.  I was a clerk there when astronauts first made “One Step for Mankind” because we were all kidding saying such an elaborate present for my birthday.

Anyway, back to Mr. Welborn.  He was from Blairsville and went there often to see his property.  He also worked on my home air conditioner for several years  I remember he was easy going and deeply religious.

One time on the way to see his property he pulled ovrer to admire the valley.  He stood on the edge of a cliff admiring the view, God’s gift, when a car sped around the corner and couldn’t make the curve and hit Mr. Wellborn’s car, which hit Mr. Wellborn and off he cliff he fell.  He lived, but narrowly.  He retired after that.

Kings' Mountain

Sharyn McCrumb is an author who has written a lot of books based on the tri-state area of Western North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Some of these books are modern times clashing with older times . Some of her books are about the race car circuit. There are some based on true historical events that she uses real names and out of the court ledger decisions but are still fiction because she has private conversations which no way she was privy to. Two that come to mind are her book about Tom Dooley (hang down your head Tom Dooley) and the trial of Mickey Silver. Mickey was the first woman to be trialed and hung by the law of North Carolina. McCrumb has a new book coming out in September that I am eager to read. The name of it is KING'S MOUNTAIN. It is about the Revolutionary War battle on King's Mountain, North Carolina. My g-g-g-g grandfather William Trammell lost his arm in that fight - it was sliced off during and to hand combat. I have read a couple books about King's Mountain and now I want to see Sharyn McCrumb make a "stab" of it.

Paul Revere Rides Again!

Thumbs Up!

The other day when turning right onto Canton Road from Hawkins Store Road reminded me of another time I did the same and a car going high speed had to change lanes so as not to hit me. Because of bushes I just plainly did not see him.
He shook his fist at me, screamed at me, and gave me the finger. Boy, was he pissed off!

Also he had a big blue bumper sticker that said NAVY RETIRED in white letters.

I wonder what he would do if I hollowed oner to him that I was in the Navy to and giver him a thumbs up or the A O K sign?

Tommy Loved Life

On this date, July 2, 1988, Anna's brother Thomas Dickerson "Tommy" and/or "Dickie" Prance lost his life in Lake Juliette, Georgia. It is unknown if he drowned or had a heart-attack. His body was not found until about fifteen months later. I like this picture of Tommy at his daughter Belinda's wedding reception, it typically shows he enjoyed life to the fullest.

I just heard on the news that a truck of illegal fireworks exploded.  I did not hear if anybody was hurt or not, but it probably caused havoc.

It also reminded me of my formative years on Manget Street.

Somehow I came in possession of a Roman Candle.  I don’t remember how I got it, but I do remember having it.

The Roman Candle would look better spewing off its fiery sparkling blaze in the night time.  I knew that.  But being immature, I could not wait to light the end and watch it “go to town” or whatever it was supposed to do.  I lit the end or the fuse in broad daylight, and the lit the end and did nothing..  I waited a few minutes and it just sat there.

Then I picked it up to see it was still lit and suddenly it proved it was still lite, very much so.  I belched out a spew of sparkling flames right onto the palm of my right hand...

YEOW!  My hand was in agony.

Another bad thing about this situation was that my father was chief of police and fireworks, at that time, were illegal in Georgia.

At that time in my life I was not that much accountable for my time.  If I was not in our yard I would probably at my friend’s house, down the street and around the corner.

I think I walked to the Strand Theater, which was one mile away.  On weekdays they had matinees.  I bought a ticket and went in.  At the concession stand I explain to the girl behind the counter my situation and I needed a cup of ice with water to submerge my hand in.  She told me to keep my cup and bring it back after the ice melted for a refill of ice and water.  She told me she was accountable for the cups but not her ice or water…or Coke, for that matter.  So, I tried ice and water and Coke and water.  I sat through the previews, and movie, and withered in pain.  I think the ice, water, and Coke got me through it.

I returned home and lived through the night, keeping in mind to keep the palm of my hand out of view.

Nice Vampire Bats

I think most people think bats are evil. I know I did. On PBS tonight they are showing a study of bats. I just learned that vampire bats leave their caves in an organized and maybe synchronized manner. They bring back enough blood to regurgitate blood to their buddies that wasn’t able, for one reason or another, couldn’t make the flight. How’s that for being HUMANE?
