I worked with Will at the Atlanta Post Office. We were both time keepers. First we were timekeepers at the Parcel Post
Annex then later on after the closed the Parcel Post Annex we were absorbed in
the main office Time Keepers Office.
Will was retired from the Air Force and very laid back,
nothing seemed to bother him. One time I
came behind him to relieve him and he just let a fart. He laughed and said I walked up on him “cooking
eggs.”
Will played a lot of poker.
He had eight daughters When his wife had their 9th daughter he
wasn’t there for the big moment, he was playing poker.
He was a part time DJ for WAOK radio station. One day he called in saying he had to go out
of town. All night on the tour manager
recorded Will giving the news, time and temperature . They presented him with all the facts of him
giving hour by hour news and temperature.
Will is such a smooth talker and never got upset, he smoothed talked
himself out of being talk. I could never
so that, as soon as they presented the facts I would start sweating bullets.
What impressed me most of Will is what he said one
time. They had us (about 5 or 6 of us)
to do something that was out of our range. We fussed and complained, we didn’t like it
all.
Will said casually, something like, “Don’t get so upset, it
is just something to do, if we didn’t do this, we would just do something else,
it is all just something to do.”
That changed my outlook and probably headed off an ulcer.
