This Day in History, October 1938

On this day of History, October 30, 1938, Orson Wells presented his audio production of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS which realistically portrayed  Martians invading Earth.  

As I said, it was realistically portrayed and some many people, who probably tuned in late and did not hear the introduction panicked.  They thought it was real and did what they had to do, like dig holes, headed for the hills, whatever.

Ghostly at Oakland Cemetery

In the late 1970s I took this picture looking in a window of a crypt at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.     Visually, I saw no what-izzit or even Casper.  But, the developed film pointed out this.  Boo!

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Movie look

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME movie.  It was about a real person back in the movie black and white days and the story of Rudy Ray Moore working on a shoestring budget, which the results looked like a failure DOLEMITE IS MY NAME.  On a late talk show the other about a week ago we saw Eddie Murphy make a pitch for but it caught on, probably because it was campy and became a success along with his next 4 or 5 movies.

Warning:  Put on tight “no outside noise” earphones on any one watching it under 12.  It has a lot of curse words, F-words, N-Words and you better put binders on the little ones too, it has a lot of tits.

There were a lot of cameos, such as Snoop Dog. Rudy Ray Moore was a real person, and Eddie Murphy played him.  Eddie Murphy also directed the movie.  He was one of the producers too!

We thought it was pretty good.

We watched it on NETFLIX.

Segregation Back "then"

In today’s Marietta Daily Journal, Cobb & State section, is the article “Black and White” by Ross Williams.  Mr. Williams is black.  He took a scholarly non-biased view of the segregation traditions and laws in Marietta back “then”.

In the article he had an illustration map of Marietta pointing out where the black neighborhoods were.

It reminded me of in the 1960s Marietta’s neighboring town Smyrna bragged of not having any black citizens in the city limits.  What they did where any cluster of blacks lived they officially made that area outside the city limits of Smyrna.  Not only did they have no voting power but also fire and ambulances service.  

But I suppose they had county ambulances, fire, and police service.  I think it was just a ploy to keep them from voting as a Smyrna citizen.

We hear today many instances, because of loopholes, that the very rich and corporations do not pay taxes.  

The Robbin Hood story is just the opposite.  But it is fiction.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY I-285!q

Today th I-285 is 50 years old today!!  The I-285 that wraps around Atlanta like a 64 miles long snake is 50 years old today.  Toot your horn!

The Braves baseball players had a star player Pascual Perez who did not speak or read English.  On his first drive to the stadium he could not read the road signs on the I-285.  He looped the 285 several times.  He was late and gained the nickname  Pascual 285 Perez which later was changed to Perimeter Perez.

This story was my introduction to MAD back in the mid 1950s when I was in the 7th grade.  To say it changed my mind-set would be an understatement.

The cover is illustrated by Kelly Freas who had illustrated in MAD and EC's War Comics.

The inside front cover (Virginia Slims mock) is by Marie Severin, who recently died.  She is also a MAD, EC Comics veteran.  She did most the coloring for MAD and went on to MARVEL Publishing Co. Her late brother John Severin was a dedicated MAD-EC artist and spent his final days with CRACKED.
