Me the Interviewer
Above is me just outside the doors of the High Museum in Atlanta interviewing a Chinese Terracotta soldier of China who was a body guard of the first Chinese emperor in 200 BC or so. He took his job very seriously . He kept his mouth shut and didn’t reveal any of the dynasty family’s secrets.
I am thinking about doing some more interviews with my little Flip camcorder for Chicken-Fat.
Hopefully, I will learn from my mistakes. Honestly, the Brandi interview caught me off guard. I was expecting to be videoed with Brandi … it is hard to be in the scene and think of something meaningfully to ask at the same time, it is sort of like chewing gum and walking at the same time, I’m sure many of my viewers can relate to that.
I think I need to be prepared when I do an interview. Like, have a prop. If they wrote a book, have the book in front of me to warm that person up
And to have reference notes with facts on the palm of my hand. Which means of course that I can’t wash my hands until after the interview.
So, what if I have an urge to go to the bathroom just before the interview? And then I will have to wash my hands…. Well, maybe then, I will let the hands washing rule slide. Then I will come out of the bathroom and shake hands with my interviewee and get down to business.

Party Loyalty? B.S.!!
I just might vote for Ray Boyd.
The Georgia Republican Party has denied Ray Boyd’s attempt to run for governor after the political newcomer refused Monday to sign their loyalty oath. – AJC Online.
I don’t vote for the party, but for the individual. I think I feel a little freer than if I restricted myself to a certain party. And I think I would feel better if whoever voted for was not going to let his/her party loyalty effect their decision.
Republicans and Democrats, more times than not, will stand behind their party, even when it is wrong.
I have seen party members stand behind their co-party-member when the person got caught abusing his/her authority or was on the take. And then, turn around and demand an impeachment of someone from the other party that did something only half as bad. That shows the unfairness and two-face of politicians.
Shouldn’t there be a Constituent Loyalty Oath or a State or National Loyalty Oath instead?
Now, after I said all that condemning party loyalty, I would also like to say it would be a serious freedom choking problem if we had a one-party system, like Russia had. You need two parties for each to keep the other one from abusing it’s power.

Today in History Coretta Scott King was born
On this date in history, April 27, 2010, Coretta Scott King was born in Marion, Alabama. She died in 2006.
Less than a year after her husband Martin Luther King was assassinated we were in the High Museum admiring the Rodin statue that Paris presented to Atlanta, as a gift as a memorial to the many Atlanta Art appreciators that were killed in a plane wreck just outside of Paris in 1962.
I sensed a movement in my peripheral vision and turned my vision to my side and there was Mrs. King standing right beside me studying the same sculpture.
I was thinking what could I say witty and intelligent to show her I was a man of the world. Hmmmm? Nothing came to mind. So, we continue to stand side by side studying the statue, not saying a word.
Should I show her my raw humor by saying something crude and down to earth? No, my inner self said. “Keep your mouth shut!”
Frankly, I was in awed of how graceful and quiet she was. I was speechless, and it is probably a good thing.
Maybe she had something witty to say too and her inner self was commanding her to keep her mouth also. I doubt it.
Years after that encounter her niece (her brother’s daughter)was a carrier at the same post office that I was a clerk at. She was a hard sincere worker that always had a sense of humor about her. And I know she appreciated my blunt humor.
The statue is now outside, overlooking Peachtree Street.

Guitar, the Movie

When belonging to NETFLIX or Blockbuster Video by mail, to get your money’s worth you find yourself watching many movies you wouldn’t otherwise see.
And that is why we watched the movie GUITAR yesterday. We are still trying to figure out what prompted us to put that on our list.
Never mind, it doesn’t matter. The fact is that we did watch it and found it strangely amusing, in a dark comedy kind of way.
The movie is apparently a low-budget movie.
It has some strange twists of faith in it. It starts out as the protagonist, Melody Wilder ( Saffron Burrows) gets some bad news from her doctor: She has four weeks to live. Then, she went back to work and was “downsized” with 4 weeks severance pay package. She left work; felt she needed to talk to somebody so she called her boyfriend but before she had a chance to tell him all her bad news he told her he wanted to breakup with her. It wasn’t her day.
She was distraught. She was in a daze. She went to her apartment and walked out with the door opened (this is New York City). I assume she only carried the clothes on her back and her pocketbook. She found a short-lease loft apartment in a huge new building. She moved in instantly.
She eliminated the clothes on her back. She stripped down butt naked and threw them out the window. She was naked and had no place to sleep or sit.
It reminds me of a double negative blues song I heard one time… “I an’t got nothing.” And in her case, not even time.
She ordered a lot of Chinese food and Pizzas and paid by credit card. It was interesting to see her pay nude at the door without being seen by the delivery person. Finally the mail carrier dropped a catalog in her mail slot. She paid for it all with her credit card of course.
In the catalog she ordered clothes and furniture. A delivery man made more than trip to her loft apartment to delivered the stuff she ordered. One time he brought her a bouquet of flowers and they made love. Melody also made love with the pizza delivery girl.
Then all three of them made love together.
I think Melody was doing things she either frowned upon or thought was unhealthy. She did not eat meat until she heard about her cancer, and definite not something like pizza.
In time the credit cards (4 weeks to be exact) maxed out, her two lovers went back to their real mates, and the manager of the apartment building evicted her, making her homeless. Another one of those bad days.
But more importantly, she was alive beyond what the doctor estimated. She went back to the doctor and the doctor called in a team of other doctors to study her and they could not figure out what happen to the cancer. It was gone.
I think one doctor had the best answer. He said that maybe the cancer did not recognize the body it made a home in because it took up another lifestyle and so it left.
It reminded of women who have tried in vain to have children, then adopt, then become pregnant.
I left out the name of the movie, Guitar. The Guitar played an important role of giving the movie a happy ending, but you will have to see that for yourself.

Varner's 2nd Reunion
Despite the bad weather, as you can see in the video the turnout, I think, was good. I know of two people that did not come because of the weather. Maybe that was God's way of preventing us from smothering each other to death.
The lunch line, controlled by the organizer, Monty Calhoun, was very nice and orderly. And the food, also controlled by Monty was very good, much like what you would have had at Varner's over 50 years ago.

I only took a few still pictures. Wait! I have a great excuse: I spilled beer on my digital camera at the 1960 Marietta High School Reunion last week, so it is a bit sluggish. In time, I hope that the dried up beer just flakes away.
Another thing, which is sort of a touchy subject, but it is as plain as our lily white skins. Back then in Marietta we lived in a segregated society. On my blog, if you go back and look at the high school pictures or pictures of the school reunion you will see very few black people. The one black person in the school year books was a musician that played at the Teenage Canteen (TAC). And the only blacks at the two Varner Reunions are Freddy and his lovely wife. Freddy is a honor guest. He was the carhop at Varner's*. I think integration of the schools in Georgia came about 1966.
*In fact, Freddie, in his 70s, is still a carhopping at Varsity, Jr. in Atlanta. He also still works at Lockheed.
Another thing, unlike some of my videos, you will hear a lot of chatter. Well, we chattered a lot, just like monkeys high up in the trees, and we still do.

SUNDAY FUNNIES - THE SPIRIT
First, I want to apologize for not having a Sunday Funnies last Sunday. My partying go in the way of my production. I could skip this one wit the name excuse because last night was the Varner's Reunion, but all excuses and no production might run some of my faithful comic books fan away. I'll do this, then get back editing my Varner pictures from last night.
This SPIRIT story was originally published in 1952. If you see the poster on the beginning splash page it ways by Will Eisner. Well, it was by Will Eisner in SPIRIT only (pardon by pun). It was by Will Eisner the same way Walt Disney comics was by Walt Disney. The only thing they used their pens for was to sign the pay checks. Each had a team of talented artists doing the art work. However, they both sat the mood and the style. Getting back to The Golden Lily starring Staring the Spirit, they have a very urban-Alfred Hitchock-lens about them... with a little jazz thrown in. And the story-plot style is straight out of the 40s and 50s black & white movies.

1st Concert of the 2010 Season
Last night was the first concert of the season, presented by the City of Marietta. The concerts are held the last Friday of the warm months. Bring something to sit on unless you are willing to rent a table.
The band was a group of elderly men who played big band, sort of, type of music. However, they had a lady singer that added spunk where it was needed.
The background music of this video is not the band playing. It is a generic tune that was included in my FLIP camcorder. If I chose instead to use the band's music there would be distracting roars and squeals from the people.
If you have a keen critical eye and mind you might notice that the movie title said it is April the 24. WRONG! The date of the movie is April the 23rd. I made a mistake, can you believe that?
If I was a professional or a perfectionist I would go back and correct that, which would be 2 hours of downloading again to my computer and another 2 hours uploading it to youtube. So, the heck with it, I don't get paid that much.

A Chat with Brandi
I have been eating spicy chili hotdogs at Brandi's World Famous Hotdogs for years. Before Brandi, it was Betty's World Famous Hotdogs, and years before that, around the 1950s and 60s, it was Marble Inn Barbecue.
After I die I might be a ghost sitting at the counter back in the corner that people talk about...swearing they saw a napkin move or heard a belch.
Brandi took over the business from Betty. Eacj day around noon it becomes standing room only and if it was me, I would be strung out. Brandi always appear laid back and not in a big frantic rush. She laughs as she does things and talks about her daughter.
I have made posts on this blog over the years about Betty and now Brandi. They are still there, run a search, or click on the Brandi's name in the bottom right blank.
Paul Roper and I met for lunch at Brandi's today. Before meeting, I asked Paul did he think Brandi would mind if I brought my new toy, the little bitty camcorder and to a video inside. He said he doubt if she would mind.
Paul beat me there about five minutes. While waiting on me asked her if she would mind if I took pictures. She told him, "not at all." We met at 11:00 before the lunch crowd took over. And, with not many people there the stage was set. I didn't know it until today but Brandy knew it is me who does the blog Chicken-Fat. I guess she figured it out. So without further ado -

Do You Mean Maria Callas?
The Marietta High School 1960 Class’s 50th Reunion, phase 2, on Saturday night, at the Allatoona Yacht Club was held mostly in two rooms. One room was a big ballroom size room where most of the people were congregating. The second room was smaller, with a bar. It was a lounge size room with a piano.
I wandered into the lounge size room looking for a photo opportunity and saw and heard Willie playing the piano and Brad singing. Both were good. The people in the room were mostly the intellectual-set of our class.
The other room was full of the jocks, class clowns, and drama queens.
A lady said something to the effect, “Brad, I didn’t know you could sing.”
Brad said something to the effect, “We were in the choir together and you didn’t know I can sing?”
And she said something to the effect, “You didn’t know I could sing either.”
Brad said, “I thought it was Maria Callas.” And people broke out laughing.
That was my cue – I broke out laughing too (in my mind I said, “Who the heck is Maria Callis?”)
Later that same night, back home in front of the computer I did a Google search on “Maria Callis.” Google asked, “Do you mean Maria Callas?
I learned that Maria Callas (1923-1977) was an American (NYC) born Greek Soprano opera singer. She was considered one of the best opera singers of the 20th Century.
I don’t know that this happened, but something similar could have: One of the intellectuals wandered from the lounge room into the ballroom and overheard somebody say something that must have been witty because everybody laughed. And later that night when he Googled searched he was asked did he mean “Patsy Cline?”
As Willie said after leaving the podium that same night, “Some things never change”.

GOBAG pre Varner Dinner
GOBAG Cuisine. Chief Chef Monty Calhoun prepared barbecue chicken quarters with coleslaw and potato salad. I got to be first in line. It was good! Speaking of quarters, who has been putting quarters into the "kitty" instead of green bills?
On occasions we have had local elected officials visit us. Sometimes you wonder if they are sniffing out the barbecue aroma in the air or the votes. Today we were visited by councilperson Grif Chalfant. I enjoyed talking to him because some of his friends are my relatives and he also listened to what I said and even agreed with me on some things. He is a likable person.
About ten or so people came this evening. The crowd wasn't all that big.
Above: Terry Townsend is thinking about something and Mark McGee came all the way from the Far East and has to return soon. We don't see him very often.
This is our last get together before the Varner Reunion the Saturday, the 24th, at the Horace Orr American Legion, on Gresham Avenue, from four to midnight. We will see you there, or we won't. Do you know with Voodoo magic you can cast distant spells and curses on people? I don't believe in that nonsense. You shouldn't either.... of course, you won't be turned into a frog just because you didn't show up for the VARNER'S REUNION.
Smell My Finger!
The first time I went to Varner’s Drive-In without my parents was probably when I was about 14 or 15 years old. I walked.
I met friends, my same age, which also walked there. We wanted to hang out at the most popular place for our older peers at Marietta High School to hangout.
So, we hung out sipping Cokes and watching the older teenage boys come and go.
I guess it was just un-lady-like for girls to come inside and hang-out but it was socially acceptable for them to sit in their cars and hang out or cruse through the parking lot. Of course, it was taboo for them to sit on or lean against cars like the boys were doing also.
One kid I knew all my life came in. He was a couple years older than me. He came directly up to me and held out his finger and said, “Smell my finger”. I guess I felt complemented by somebody older paying direct attention to me… but wanting me to smell his finger? After I got a whiff of his finger I understood why. He was bragging he had a date and was going places. He also shared his finger with several other boys sitting around. His bragging right was on his finger.
After he went back to his car us pre-16 boys had to walk outside too, to get a look at his girlfriend. We were nosy. It was a girl we all knew at school.
At the 1960 Class 50th Reunion last week I saw the same girl and talked briefly with her. We caught each other up on our lives. She looks like a typical grandmother and she might even be a great grandmother. As we talked I wondered if she knew about a dozen kids got a carnal whiff of her well over 50 years ago. Her boy friend from such a long time ago died a few a few years back.
You have Varners’ memories too don’t you? Come to the Varners’ Reunion !

MHS 1960 Reunion Friday - video
This was our first night of the reunion - a happy hour, or a warm-up, so to speak. Living beings are moving all around, just like a can of worms.
