My Petty Genealogy part 1
I decided to run the genealogical information on my mother's surname PETTY on this blog.
The first post is on the first Petty of my line to come to America. His name was Hubert Patey. His children changed their surname to Petty. Read below and there may be a clue why they changed their last name.
By the way, I thought the first sentence of paragraph 3 was interesting.
Generation No. 1
1. HUBERT1 PATEY was born Bef. 1650, and died Bef. 1687. He married (1) REBECCA. She was born Bef. 1662, and died Unknown. He married (2) FAITH UNKNOWN. She was born Bef. 1670, and died Aft. 1700.
Notes for HUBERT PATEY:
Hubert Petty (Patey) arrived in America as an indentured servant of William Turner and family in June 1650, in Maryland. He claimed his freedom from the Turners in a court case in 1654, and moved to Norfolk Co., Va., where he was working as an overseer in 1660. By 1666 he and his wife Rebecca were purchasing land in Lancaster Co., Virginia from Abraham Bush on Morratico Creek. This was the land later given to Thomas and Katherine Petty. We don't actually know if Thomas was the son of Rebecca or of Faith, but he named his first daughter Rebecca, and the name Faith does not appear again in his descendants for many generations.
Hubert PATEY is found in many times in the Lancaster County, Virginia, Order Books 1656 to 1681. He apparently was a very colorful type of character. He appeared in court several times for public drunkeness and assault. He broke out of prison and is described as a violent man who cannot conform to Man's Law.

I have a Petty line too. Years ago my cousin photocopied some pages from a book that she didn't get the title page info from. It was the "PETTY" line and a lot of what she copied was from Virginia. Have you run across a smallish book with Petty's through it?
And with Patient book, is that supposed to be Patent book?
SouthLakesMom,
I don't know. I think it is a typo. It probably is Patent.
