Notes for BONNIE SUSAN WORLEY:
Bonnie was born in Caney Fork community on what is now called Chastine Creek Road. This is in Jackson County,N.C. near Sylva. This a single lane road that has breathtaking scenery as you drive along sheer dropoffs. It is an adventure to drive this four or five mile road up a mountain but well worth it. Chastine Creek consists of rushing waters and waterfalls and the road follows the creek most of the way up.
Bonnie's sisters Hattie and Grace were old enough to go to school and had to be walked out by their mother, Sallie, down the treacherous four to five mile trail that along with it's beauty held dangers of wild animals and the slippery slope of the raging waters near the trail. Many times they could go only one day a week due to bad weather etc. but they were fortunate to have an educated father, John, that home schooled them. John is reported to have been on the school board, trying to get education for everyone in the area. And John Jr's father, John Sr., was said to have been a school teacher. The name of the school was Sugar Creek located at the bottom of Caney Fork.
The family moved to Cane Creek Community about 1910 when Bonnie was four years old. Her younger sister, Emma, was one, Sister Hattie was nine and sister Gracie was seven. Here they attended Brasstown/ Hoosier schools.
Their father, John, was a farmer as was most everyone at that time in that area. He raised cane for molasses and sugar. In Feburary, 1920, he took sick with pneumonia and meningitis while making cane into molasses. The neighbors came in and was finishing what he started and was working on this when he died. This was very devastating to this family of females. Farming required the physical strength of men. So Hattie, eighteen, married an older man that had a family already and Gracie, sixteen, married a man that had eight children and his wife had just died leaving a baby. Bonnie, thirteen, soon married at barely fifteen to someone that deserted her in West Virginia when she became pregnant with her firstborn.
Bonnie tried to work in a cotton mill in Virginia but found it impossible due to sexual harrassement from her supervisor ( Yes , it was there in 1925). As soon as she earned enough for train fare, she caught a train to Murphy,NC where her mother Sallie Worley and her sister Gracie met her. She lived with them in Fires Creek Community, Hayesville, NC until she met and married Harvie Dillard Lance . They married May 13, 1927. Harve's wife had died from T.B. after giving birth to a son, James. When Harve and Bonnie started their life together, they each had a son about the same age, Rob and James.They moved to Harve's home in the Lance Cove, Sweetwater comunity, Clay County, NC. This was on the large farm purchased in 1899 by Harve's father Samuel Debarris Lance.
Bonnie was welcomed into this large family and seemed happy with them. Harve and Bonnie started having their family together, Bessie, Lillie, Edith, Dan, Kenneth, Myrtle, Sally, was born in this home. Bonnie's children attended Sweetwater School when they lived in the Lance Cove.
As the family grew, they responded to the need for more elbow room by renting a house on Fires Creek Community in Dec. 1942. They moved their belongings on a boat crossing the beautiful Hiawassee River that separated Lance Cove and Fires Creek Community. Her children attended Fires Creek School for a time. Her first born, Rob, went off to WWII in Feb, 1944. Rob sent his mother, Bonnie, a small Army allotment check to help out at home. It was small but made a huge difference in her life.
With the help of cash coming in, Bonnie and Harve were able to purchase a farm of about 110 acres on Qualla road, near Hayesville in 1944 from Ephraham and Mary Byers. Mary Byers was a good friend to Bonnie. Ephraham "Effe"wanted to sell the farm for cash but Mary seeing Bonnie's large family and her virtuous ways prevailed upon Effe to set up a payment plan. Harve borrowed 400 dollars from his brother, Glen, and made the down payment on the about 1600 dollar purchase. Harve and Bonnie bought more surronding parcels as time went along and the farm was qute large.
Bonnie gave birth to three more children at the Qualla home, Louise, Jr. and Garnet. Her children now attended Hayesville School. Harve got a job driving a school bus for Hayesville and a full-time job became available with the state Hwy. Department which he was able to get in 1944. Harve had always supplemented their income by doctoring livestock, cutting hair and helping locals with legal problems. Of course, he never charged for these services but would often come home with hams, can stuff, apples or whatever the folks had an abundance of. And there was always farming, livestock trading produced some income. Hewing cross ties brougt in some cash. Everything was canned,dried,milked etc.; hogs and chickens for meat and eggs. Life was a little easier now but still very hard. Bonnie was always up before dawn working and still working after everyone else was in bed. Always trying to make a better life for her children whom she obviously was devoted to.
