The Hawkins' Store Theft

Charles Gordon Hawkins, age 93, of East Point passed away Friday, August 10, 2012.  Graveside service will be Monday, August 13, 11 AM at Noonday Baptist Church, Marietta.  Arrangements by Medford-Peden Funeral Home.

Charles Hawkins' parents owned the Hawkins Store that Hawkins Store Road off Canton Road in Marietta got its name.  The store has been gone for many years.

My father-in-law, Paul, when a young man, just married, worked in the store as a clerk.  He died in 2000.

Five or six years before he died he received in the mail a letter with no return address.  It had cash money in it and a letter.

The letter was anonymously sent.  It explained said that he sees Paul every Sunday at church and  they have been friends for years.  He said many years ago when Paul worked in the store when Paul wasn't looking the mysterious person stole something in the store, I forgot if it was a small amount of cash or an object like candy or whatever.  He went on to say that he felt Paul probably had to pay for the missing item (or cash) out of his own pocket.  The letter went on to say it has been on his concious ever since.  He figures with bank rates interest about how much the missing amount would be worth the day he wrote the letter.

In the above picture I think Paul is the 2nd from the right.  This looks to be about the time of the theft mentioned above.  These boys looks like they are probably Paul's friends.  I wonder if one of them knows something Paul won't know until about 70 years later?
