Notes for COL JOHN HARDEE:
John HARDEE received a large land grants in the area that was to become Pitt County, North Carolina.
The first courts of Pitt County were held in the Hardee home. The first pillory, stocks, and prison were on his lands.
His allegiance to England must have been close, for he is buried under the name of John Hardee, Esq. - a typical British custom for those of importance.
There is little direct importance connected with his leadership of troops during the Revolution, as he was 88 years old in 1775, and died soon after the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. The part he played seems to more of a political than military nature, pleading for funds.
His old home stood for many years. It was a large two-story house wiith a large hall and winding stairway of that period of English architecture. It fell to decay and was removed in 1926 and a small one-story house was erected on the site.

Do you have any further information about John Hardee, the younger and his descendants? My great-grandfather was William L. Hardy, born March 3, 1829 in Georgia. I have info on John Hardee, but nothing past the dates of birth and death of his three children. My grandfather was John Jefferson Hardy, born in Dothan, Alabama in 1862. Trying to fill in the blanks.
