One Thing Leads To Another

One brick leads to the next brick and one blog post leads to another blog post.

On a post of Chicken-Fat yesterday of the Marietta Scene, Kenju made the comment she liked those bricks paving the street.

The above picture was taken in 1917. A large crowd is standing around and watching brick mason “Little Jim” Lucus. He, alone, laid all the bricks in downtown Marietta, sometimes laying as many as 1700 bricks a day. He was an employee of Pittman Construction Company in Atlanta.*

The mayor James Brumby looks down at his daughter which she and The crowd look on in awe and respect at Little Jim methodically doing his masonry.
I bet after Jim returned to Atlanta at night, if he took the trolley, he would have to sit in the back. Shame.

  1. What a fascinating bit of your local history. Thanks for that.

I'll bet poor Jimmy's back was sore at the end of a day...1700 bricks a day...ouch.

  2. What Pappy said! All I can think about is his poor back.

Thanks for the link, Eddie. That's a wonderful old photo!

  3. Pappy & Judy,
Actually the caption under the photo said "up to 1700" bricks a day. So, I hope, for his sake, the average was much less.
