SUNDAY FUNNIES - ABBIE AN' SLATS

click to read the balloons and see what the heck is going on.

Abbie an’ Slats comic strip ran in the news paper from 1937 to 1971. It was created by Al Capp (Li’l Abner) but he did not do the illustrating. The first illustrator was Raeburn Van Buren. Capp dropped writing the strip in 1945 and turned it over to his brother Elliott Caplin. Van Buren illustrated the strip for 24 years. The National Cartoonist Society named Van Buren to their Hall of Fame in 1979.*

It appears to me that it is has a hint of BRINGING UP FATHER (Maggie & Gigs) and LUM & ABNER.

Al Capp was one heck of a creative person to churn out two quality strips. LI'L ABNER was a well-done continuous epic also. Al also had a dark side, which we will skip over on this post.... this time.

Here is a whiff of the adventurous strip.
