Kennesaw Mountain and Marietta

I took this picture from the top of the County Deck. You can see some of the steeples on Church Street and Kennesaw Mountain looming in the background.

The mountain is about one and half to two miles away. It isn't far away. During the second week of June, 1864, a part of the Civil War was fought on and points near the mountain. The North had a couple thousand casualties and the South had about 600.

People in downtown Marietta could hear the rage of war. They said it sounded like popcorn popping.

  2. Judy,
Are you a perfectionist or something? Picky picky picky! Just because the whole text in the statement is based on a picture that wasn't there....

(The above paragraph is called "saving face" on my "Whoops!)

Seriously Judy, thanks for pointing that out.

  3. The rifle/musket fire probably sounded like popcorn. But I've read accounts that the cannons could be heard in Atlanta - and with a terrible boom.

  4. Deborah,
That would make sense. Probably either the cannons sounds were not mentioned or I forgot.
