Bird Proof Light Pole

See the light pole? Enlarge the picture and see the upper part lined with many sharp points to prevent birds from sitting on them. This is one of many light poles in downtown Marietta at the Square.

If the birds have no place to sit then why stick around?

Another nuisance problem solved by the City of Marietta. They are still working on the homeless people problem.

  1. Homeless people and now homeless birds.

Just drove back and forth across the Chesapeake Bay Brigde Tunnel, down to the skin cancer doctor in Virginia Beach. 25 miles of light poles like in your photo each way. Every pole is staked out by a gull (buzzards on a couple) waiting for a red Grand Marquis to bomb. But they are interesting to watch. Often they ride the wind right next to the bridge.

  2. Si,
Glide with the wind - now that sounds like fun... until you run out of wind.

  3. And they do that. Every trip, there are a few feathery corpses on the bridge. Guess they can die of old age and diseases, but some must lose lift when the cars and trucks are passing underneath. That is the reason for the buzzards.

  4. They just fly down to Roswell And Fairground and perch on the lines...and if you watch them closely, it appears that they are having a serious conversation...lol

  5. Right next to the Ziegfeld Theater, between 6th Ave. and 7th Ave., there's a high-ceiling atrium that cuts through the middle of the block from 54th St. to 53rd. The interior is at least two stories high. When this building was constructed in 1990, pigeons flew into the atrium, perched overhead and left droppings.

One day I looked up and saw a plastic owl suspended a few feet from the ceiling. It worked. The pigeons vanished and never returned.

  6. Deborah,
I wonder what they chatter so much about. Also, what about all the big old oak trees in Glover Park - surely they don't have little pointed things on the limbs.

    Bhob,
If the City of Marietta hears about the owl image scaring away the birds they might try putting up a scare-crow in a cop's uniform to scare away the homeless from the park benches.
