Praying For Rain

Georgia’s Governor Sonny Perdue is to host a pray for rain this week sometime, if he hasn’t already. Some people are not happy because he is doing this.

Some atheists and strict Constitutionents (I made up that word) are not happy. They both feel he is doing this as the head CEO of Georgia who has sworn to uphold the United States Constitution. And, the United States Constitution says a separation of Church and State will be maintained.

However, I don’t see anything it could hurt. And, it might help. It is like a group of positive thoughts causing an outcome to go their way. You don’t even have to believe in a supreme being to accept that. Nature is full of positivisms.

Some good could come from praying for rain. The only bad thing, if it happens to be in the books to rain anyway, the people who prayed might claim credit for something they don’t deserve. Or, it doesn’t rain, and they can claim it was “God’s Will”.

They can’t lose.

  1. Personally, I'd prefer that he not waste time praying for rain and instead implement some sound policies that could prevent another drought in the first place. I've read a lot about the foolish thinking that led up to the current crisis. But I guess that actually takes money and forces people into unpopular positions, so prayer it is. good luck with that.

  2. Suzanne,
From what I read you are right, things were mishandled. But Sonny is an expert at sidestepping the issues. I bet if he is ever a target in a pie throwing contest he won't even have to wash his face afterwards.

  3. Prayer is never a waste of time, and it could help. He ought to implement different policies and he can do both -or should.

We need the rain too, so send it up here if you get any.

  4. Judy,
Water flows south. If we get any, we will have to keep it, water rarely flows north (or that is my excuse anyway).

  5. I am praying y'all get some rain. Living in South Texas, I have seen many bad drought years. It is sad to see the crops wither in the fields and cattle shed their weight, and everyone struggle to keep them alive.

I don't believe it could possibly hurt anything for everyone to pray this one out.

I am curious as to how one could prevent a drought.

  6. Janie,
Thank you for well wishes and prayers and anything else you want to toss our way.
I know in Texas you have had your share.
I guess the drought itself can't be prevented by us humans, but the water management by the high-ups, Corps of Engineers, and all... right now, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida are fighting over rights of the water that flows in the Chattahoochee River... if it wasn't that, it would be something else... plus a certain breed of mussels are endangered and by laws they get priority over the water - all these things are human decisions... and because of all them I have to go out and buy two new water efficient commodes or the house can not be sold.... not that we are moving but I don't want to make it hard on my sons one day.

We got our much-needed rain here in North Georgia... a good soaking! Our creek was dry, so now it might run again for a day or two.

How about a rain dance? Maybe a befeathered Sonny can whoop it up with a medicine man...

    I think he should pray....

I also think Atlanta needs to construct some water towers, the US Govt needs to stop draining Lake Lanier, and we need to have some desalination plants built over by Savannah.

    But thats just me
    Toodles buddy

  9. DK,
I'm glad you got some rain... we got about .5 inch which has already dried up. If you got enough rain, maybe that bear that visited you won't be seeing you for a while.

    Steve,
We have at least three big water towers near here. They are running low too.
Well, I thought I would help with your suggestion that Sonny put on the paint and feathers and do a rain dance so I looked in my files for a picture, coming soon on my blog is the closest I could come up with.

  10. I understand the mismanagement of the existing waters. We have the same problems here. Right now, San Antonio is trying to grab water from everybody else, including us, because they keep expanding without planning on how they are going to provide services to all those taxpayers, like the new Toyota plant. They just keep thinking that if they build it, the rest of us will provide whatever they need/want.

The bottom line is that there has to be something to manage to begin with. No rain for extended periods will eventually mean no water in lakes, streams and stock tanks.

I am glad y'all did get some rain. And I sure am glad you got those water conserving commodes. Myself, I would be more inclined to leave a few problems for the kids.

  11. Janie,
"Janie" was my mother Ethel America Petty Hunter's nickname.

We don't have the heart to leave our commode problems to our sons.... they might flush our remains.

you never know what those kids will do after you're gone!

  13. Janie,
That is right. I'll don't know what I'll do after I'm gone either.
