I took this Bar-B-Q restaurant picture about 10 years
ago. We ate there. It was good.
I don’t know if it is still in operation or not. It was on Hwy 400, near Dawsonville, Georgia. In that same location many years earlier it
was a convenience store.
At the time one of my friends at the Post Office was a
gentile carrier who lived in Douglasville.
He always had a sack of dog biscuits for the dogs on his route. At that time he bought some land near
Dawsonville, which was less than ten miles where gold was discovered and
mined. His new property was all
wooded. It has a creek running through
it. He built a 2 cylinder contraption that
pulled by a merry-go-round system dip little containers into the sand at the
bottom of the creek and pull it up and then shift the sand out through a screen
bottom leaving little gold chunks or bits.
One Saturday the carrier and his girlfriend (also joint owner) met us at
the convenience store. And at the store
we would load up on ice, soft drinks, hotdogs to cook out on a portable grill
before we went to their property. He and
I went inside the store to buy what we needed.
We got all we thought we needed and at the cash register we remembered
the catsup and mustard. My friend asked
the cashier lady where were the condiments?
Without looking up she said, “Aisle 4.”
We went to aisle 4 and looked, there were no condiments.
We went back and told the lady we did not see them. She told us they were there.
We went again, looking extra hard. Still no condiments.
We went back to the cashier counter and told her there were
no condiments on Aisle 4.
She threw down what she was doing and said, ” I’ll show you!”
With her leading, all three of us marched over to aisle
4. She threw her finger at the shelf and
said, “There is your condiments!” She
was pointing at Condoms.
It was embarrassing to tell her we were looking for catsup
and mustard.
She was very embarrassed.
My friend told me for years after that, every time he
dropped inside the store they had a laugh over that.
When I went into it as a BBQ joint it looked like her that ran
the cash register there too.
By the way, my two sons did find some bits of gold. They had a good time mining.
