Mrs J.N. Petty, or wife of J.N. Petty
As you may know I dabble in genealogy. Here is something I found amusing: One of my distant relatives that lived many years ago, was John N. Petty. He fought in the Civil War, knew Latin, knew the Bible inside and out and love to sing in church. He was married three times. His last wife was much younger and outlived him by a good number of years. She has no identity. Usually I can find something on a spouse through county marriage records or tombstones or something. But this lady is a holdout. On her tombstone it is carved in stone to be remembered only by "Mr. J.N. Petty". She is buried alongside her husband and the other two wives, who have their names on their tombstones . This morning a distant cousin sent me a copy of Mr. J. N. Petty's obituary. You would think her obituary would ;give her first name and maiden name. It didn't. Even there, she was only known by Mrs. J.N. Petty. And get this: The obituary said she died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Bradley of Greenberg, Indiana. Mrs. C.C. Bradley? Mrs. J.N. Petty's daughter, Mrs. C.C. Bradley was following her mama's footsteps.
