End of the Trammells, maybe

 

This will end the Trammell line, the first that came to America., Thomas Trammell.

Thomas Trammell [72], son of Phillip Tremill/Trammell [74] and Dorothy Boggs/Boys [76], was born about 1654 in , , Devonshire , England and died in 1720 in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford Co, VA84 about age 66.

General Notes: In the Seventeenth Century, Virginia was one of the Original Thirteen British Colonies. The land was plentiful and the soil was rich. The rich landowners needed muscle. They could not force people to come over to work for them. Therefore, they offered an incentive: They would pay one's boat passage over and that individual would be indebted to that benefactor for a period of usually four to seven years. They would be "Indenture Servants", and for their four to seven year service time they virtually had no rights.

In the spring of 1671 Thomas sailed from Bristol, England, to America.

Thomas TRAMMELL came over to be an Indenture Servant. Some researchers believe he was born in Germany, where others believe he was born in England. He arrived in Virginia about 1670, when few American Settlements were over fifty years old. He was about twenty years old.

Francis Wyeth, his master, refused to let him have his freedom after the agreed four-year servitude period. Thomas TRAMMELL, indentured servant, had to carry his master Francis WYETH to court to sue him for his freedom. The stakes were not exactly even. If he lost he faced a possible whipping or flogging for questioning the authority of his master. On the other hand if the Master lost, all he would lose was the servant with no penalties involved. An American way of life was getting started.

Thomas Trammell received 50 acres of land

In the Minutes of the Council of the General Court of Virginia, dated March 5, 1674/1675, page 405, is this entry: "Upon oath of Captain Moore that Thomas TRAMMELL came to this country but for four years - it is ordered that he be acquitted from services and that Mr. Francis Wyeth, his master, do pay him coin and clothes according to custom and costs."

Noticed that the Court's Minutes used "Mr. Francis Wyeth" and no-suffix "Thomas Trammell"? He won anyway. He was alson awarded fifty acres to begin his duties as a citizen in the colony.

His daughter Elizabeth was born in 1672, which shows he was married with at least one child as an indentured servant.

Thomas TRAMMELL settled in Stafford County (previously Westmoreland). He died there at age seventy.

Thomas married Mary Alice Williams [73] [MRIN: 36] in 1668 in St Gile, Cripplegate, London, England.65
