When my hero Harvey Kurtzman started HELP Magazine, published by Warren Publishing his operating expenses were very low. To fill pages and keep the idea of warp humor rolling he mostly paid starving young cartoonists just starting out. They were trying to get anybody to publish their stuff for almost nothing, just for the resume. I think he paid about $5 for joke.
