Two True Halloween Stories in my Formative Years
Since it is
the Halloween season, here are two true Halloween stories that happened in my
formative years.
Story Number 1. We read in The
Marietta Daily Journal the other day that The Marietta Daily Journal will sell
their building at the corner of Fairground and Glover Streets to the Cobb
County Education and move closer to town.
The Cobb
County Board of Eduation already owns most of the property on the south side of Glover Street
from one end to the other.
The mention
of the property that The Marietta
Journal is on now brought back memories.
I lived around the corner on Manget Street from age 7 to 15 and knew
almost every tree, slope, and little
hills in the area. Across from the
Marietta Journal building on Glover Street is the Perry Parham Little League
Baseball Field.
Manget Creek
flowed through Larry Bell Park, across Glover Street, behind into a patch of
woods the MDJ would own. A trail went
into the woods beside the creek. The
trail went up a hill.
We boys
called that area "The Hollow".
At night we could hear strange owl and other bird sounds. We thought the area was haunted. It was only natural that one Halloween night
to go to "The Hollow" and see which one of us was brave enough to go
deep into the woods there.
I was
something of a show-off and said I would go down the trail into the darkness.
From memory
I could stay on the trail and go up the hill.
About half way up the hill I heard a noise in front of me and looked
up. A pair of green eyes were looking at
me. I stopped and started backing up but
keeping my eyes on the green eyes.
The eyes
started following me. I was scared
shitless.
Walking
backwards down a hill I lost my balance and tripped. The green eyes rushed to me face to
face. Then I felt Skipper, my dog, lick
me in the face.
Skipper was
a huge part collie and part bird dog that ran free. Back then we never heard of a leash law.
I think the reason his eyes were green is the about the same reason in some photos our eyes might be red. Dogs do not have the same eye-ball innards that we do, I think that is why most of us can see color and dogs can't. But sometimes you see dogs with green eyes in a flash photograph. There must have been a street light or something nearby.

Halloween
Story Number 2. I don't think this story happened on Halloween, but is scary and violent and
the same area.
In the
previous story the trail went up the hill, if one had followed it they would
have ended up behind a barn.
The barn
belonged to Eddie's grandfather. Not
me, another Eddie. This Eddie was mentally challenged and I think
his parents disowned him and he lived with various relatives, including his
grandparents.
One day a
bunch of us were up in the loft of the barn playing, wresting, and so on. Somebody reminded Eddie that just about a
year ago I broke his nose in a fight and blood went everywhere.
Evidently
Eddie had forgot that, but now his memory of the event surfaced. He pounced on me and started choking me.
He was very strong and I could not break away. I could not breath, I thought I was at my end.
He was very strong and I could not break away. I could not breath, I thought I was at my end.
Then, like divine interference, the plywood over
the rafters in the loft tilted. They
were not nailed down and we got too close to the edge, so it tilted with the new weight on it and dumped
us to the ground like a dump truck would.
I hopped up and sprinted away like a jack rabbit.
A couple
years ago I heard Eddie was now in prison for murder, thank goodness, not mine.
Halloween Haunted House
Another True
Halloween Story.
About 37
years ago there was an old abandoned house standing where the Post Office on Sandy Plains Road is
now. Next door is a church cemetery.
A local
civic organization had a Halloween Haunted House in the old house when Rocky
was about 3 or 4 years old. Rocky begged
to go. I took him.
It was a
typical haunted house with strobe lights, chain saws, severed heads, and other
horrid delights.
It was more
than Rocky expected. He screamed and
screamed hid his eyes from some of the action.
The next day
he did not even want to ride in the car
by the old house.
I tried to
convince him it was all a show, make-believe .
I decided to drive down the dirt bumpy driveway to the house and show
him it was all empty - just a harmless old house.
He begged
for us not to go. Regardless of his
protests we went anyway. I had a point
to prove.
When we got
close to the porch we saw a several plastic mannequin legs upside down sticking
out of a garbage can.
Which of
course, caused more screaming.

Unique Graves in Marietta
I should say "Unique to me." I am not a researched local historian. I'm sure I left out a lot that could have been interesting. I used the graves I knew something about. Research? What's that?
Also I did not include kin-folks except for one time. If I included my kin-folks, that would be a blog by itself.
Be sure and click on each picture to see something you might not have otherwise noticed.

Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga was named after him
My 5th grade teacher. Van Callaway (above) pushed me against the railing of a fire escape at school and cracked my forehead opened. Miss Shouse held my head up and pressed ice against the cut so I would not bleed out. And the only thing I could think of is that women sure have soft thighs!

Amicalola Falls, View at the Top
A brief
moment at the top of Amicalola Falls in
North Georgia near Dawsonville. It is the highest waterfall in Georgia. We revisited it a few days ago.
I was also
going to say it is the steepest - like a
cliff waterfall. It looks that way in
the winter time with not much foliage. The first several years of our marriage on our anniversary we spent a few days at the top. Then they had cabins at the top partially
around a small lake. I told the park
ranger what we did and he said the lake broke its dam and caused a lot of
damage. He said the lake and the cabins
have been done away with.
According to
the below postcards I Googled it was
more tiered than I realized.

Willow's 6th Sense: "Arf! I see a live person"
This really
happened yesterday: We decided to take a
ride to the mountains after we dropped off our car at the Tidwell Ford for some
work.
Anna left
the house in the Ford. She had to go by
Krogers so I gave her some time before
Willow and I left. I did not know how
much time to allow . We just went after
I gave up looking for my map.
On Chastain
Road we stopped at a red-light. From Old
Canton Road, which goes by Krogers Anna
entered Blackwell Road and we fell in behind her.
Willow saw
her car and started crying for her. We
could not see Anna in the car but I knew it was her by the license plate number
and a magnate sticker about dog rescue.
I don't know
how she knew it was Anna but she did. Sound of the engine? License plate number?
The Invisible Man Hits Arby's.
I noticed
Arby's is advertising their new Deep Fried Cajun Turkey sandwiches. I had to try it
I went to
the Arby's nearest us. Three women were
at the counter ordering. I quickly figured
out they were related: a mother and her
two daughters in their early 20s.
The three
women were ordering, changing their minds, and reordering. They wanted to know the details of each
sandwich they ordered, like the type of onion, and were they fried, and so on. All of the order were to be on the same
ticket. During the order one had to go
to restroom and the order taker (and me) had to wait on her return to complete
the order... I think she too ordered and cancelled items. I think they were confusing the hell as of
the counter man.
Finally I
got to order my Deep Fried Cajun Slice Turkey Sandwich.
The three
women grabbed each item as they put it on the counter. It was a to-go order. I think the counter workers should have kept
all it in a bunch beyond their reach and handed it all over at one time.
Finally they
left with their order and my Cajun-deep-fried Turkey too.
All three of
the front employees had to search around for my sandwich, they knew they saw my
order sitting there. And finally
concluded the women took it.
They
realized an error was made and made me a new one.
No harm, no
fowl.

Garbage Pail Kids Ride Again!
The other
day I was looking for the right visual for a blog post and thought about
Garbage Pail Kids. I Googled and found Garbage Pail Kids but did
not find any that would complement my post but I did find an inspiration for
this post.
I thought Garbage
Pail Kids were something of the past but apparently they are coming on as bold
as ever.
Trump seems
to be one of their favorite subjects.
See?
