Sunday Funnies!! MAD Magazine's Vera Cruz & Cinco De Mayo

This is a combo.  In a way, it is recognizing Cinco De Mayo.  Well, I guess it is recognizing it because it has Mexicans at war.

By the way, did you know Cinco De Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. at Mexican restaurants than it is celebrated in Mexico?    It is not even a major holiday there.  It commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla.  Mexico's actual Independence Day it celebrated September the 16th, celebrating its freedom from Spain.

Below is from the pages of the first issue of MAD Magazine #24.  The first 23 issues of MAD were in comic book format.  It lampoons the movie VERACRUZ made in 1954, staring Jesse Cooper and Burt Lancaster.  The story was written by Harvey Kurtzman and the art was by Jack Davis, the same as yesterday.

Take it away, boys!
