I know of an elderly man who farmed all his life and his bone were tired. About the same time he was too old to work was about the same time, in the 1950s, watching TV was becoming a way of life. Then he watched some TV, which wa new and a novelty to him. Often he would dose off while watching.
One day, at almost lunch time he said,
“Turn on the television, they are going to hang that fellow at noon.”
John Louis Evans was executed at Holman Prison in Atmore AL in 1983 for the murder of a man in Mobile in 1977 during the commission of an armed robbery at the man's pawn shop. As the victim lay on the floor,he was shot in the back in view of his two little girls. Evans was 27 at the time of the crime. I remember the news accounts of the crime and wondering how he had come to this point in his life. He was young, attractive and well-spoken. He was not remorseful and said he would do it again under the right circumstances. I believe part of the execution was televised but I couldn't find anything about it. If memory serves, cameras were there and they blacked it out before the actual execution began. His story is very interesting and you can find it if you google his name.
ReplyDeleteJan, That is interesting, but this post is a lighter story about an old man getting reality confused with what he saw on television in a shoot 'em cowboy movie or somehting.
