William Johnson Hunter (1813 – 1899, son of JOhn Hunter:
In his whiskey distilling business, he was paid in gold and had accumulated quite a bit by the time of the Civil War. He was fearful that some renegades or outlaws (like Coot Ray's Gang) might come by and rob him so he made a poke sack of heavy duck cloth which was larger than a gallon bucket; filled it with his gold; brought it from his house to the Nottley River just east of the Daniel England's house and threw it across the River for Daniel to keep for the duration of the War. He felt his brother-in-law Daniel, was the only one he could trust.
