The Gordy Property
The Varsity Drive-In Restaurant in Atlanta has been around since 1928, when Frank Gordy gave up being a student at Georgia Tech and took his professor’s advice, “sell hotdogs for a living”.
I don’t know if it is still true or not but at one time it was the world’s largest drive-in restaurant and now they have Varsities scattered throughout Metro Atlanta and Athens.
There was a place about in Cobb County, about 2 miles from here known as the Gordy Property. It was owned by Frank Gordy and family. It was mostly woods and grown up dirt driveway. It was the largest virgin land parcel in Cobb County.
I read that the Gordy family had sold it to a developer and I heard that there were plans the big bulk of the property was to a medical center for East Cobb County. I think something fell through. Now iit is block after block of a yuppie upper income kingdom that their little castles all look almost alike.
However, there is a part of it that a vocational school and a county operated indoor aquatic center are on…. Behind a shopping center, also part of the ex-Gordy property.
Before the developing began I went into the grown up driveway and looked around (about 1982) to take some pictures. There was an old partially burned house and a few childhood remnants. It looked like any other home place from another time. They even had a barn. I don't know if Frank Gordy lived here one time or not.
It is sad it had to be bulldozed away to make way for progress.
Love the old fire places--like sentinals.
ReplyDeleteKvatch,
ReplyDeleteThey do look like sentinals don't they? They must have been sleeping on their watch!
'Tis the way of the world, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteYep. Just like a colony of termites in your house.
